1. Objectives I investigated the effects and mechanisms of Semen Tiglii(ST, 巴豆), Radix Euphorbiae Kansui(REK, 甘遂) and Pedicelus Melo(PM, 瓜蒂) in the view of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 2. Methods I analyzed the literature about oriental medicine and Sasang Constitutional medicine related to herbal Medicine. The contents analyzed were efficacy, efficacious disease, dosage, usage, side effect, toxicity. 3. Results The first, similarities of ST, REK and PM are improving Gwangyuk, the Chest Discomfort with Constipation, Dysuria and Nausea, toxic, used in urgency, asministered by itself and used shaped powder. The second, ST and REK used the diseases related water and food metabolism in Soumin and Soyangin. PM used the diseases related Qi and fluid metabolism in Taeumin. The third, diarrhea caused by ST and REK is symptom to retrieve the diseases related water and food metabolism. The vomiting caused by PM is symptom to retrieve the diseases related Qi and fluid metabolism. 4. Conclusions The ST, REK and PM is good herbal medicine to retrieve the urgency symptom caused by the body unbalance in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. The proper dosage is essential because of toxicity of drugs.

1. Objectives The objective of this paper is to understand on treatment of in critical state patients based on the text book of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. We expect this study can be helpful in treating the critical state patients. 2. Methods The study is mainly based on the bibliographical research on the 『Dongyisoosebowon』 and on the "Principle of dosing for patient in critical state". 3. Results and conclusions Lee je-ma suggested a health scale which people can measure his health grade from a standard healthy state to severe diseases. We investigated the treatment of 'critical state' patients according to his scale. Lee je-ma also confirmed the standard dose of herbs and how to take herbs in compliance with the state which each patient in. We tried to find a rules of treating the critical state patients based on the text 『Dongyisoosebowon』 and we suggested brief principles in treating patients.

1. Objectives and Methods It has been examined 703 papers of Sasang Constitution Society published from 1989 to 2007. Among them, the study methods have been classified focused on 332 papers related to clinical research and the method of constitution diagnosis and subjects have been researched to research the reality of the clinical research of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 2. Results 1. The rest studies are the most which can not be classified by existing study method among 332 clinical studies. 2. The study of patient control group is 17 cases and the clinical experiment is one case, so highly well-grounded studies have not been performed. 3. The most method of constitution diagnosis is the constitution diagnosis by experts and by QSCC. 4. The number of constitution diagnosis method performed in the research institution is within 2. They are 254 cases(89.5%). 5. The studies which utilize more than 3 constitution methods are 22 cases and the studies that use medical rash are 7cases(31.8) 6. The 215 cases that subjects are less than 100 are the most and 100~500 subjects are 71 cases. 500~10000 subjects are 33 cases and more than 1000 subjects are 15 cases. 3. Conclusions Therefore, it is needed to increase the rate of highly well-grounded studies and set the standard criteria by providing constitution diagnosis guideline.

1. Objectives This paper was tried to find out the clinical use of Gwanjung-tang by comparing patients' chief complain and natural symptom. 2. Methods The study was researched as clinically with medical records of 88 patients who visited a certain oriental medicine clinic which is in Seoul during January, 2000 and June, 2006. 3. Results 1) The male patient who was treated with Gwanjung-tang(寬中湯) is rare. The rate of patients who visited clinic in her forties is 27.3%, in fifties is 18.2%, in thirties is 15.9%, in sixties is 12.5%, in twenties is 10.3%. 2) Chief complain which made patients to visit clinic is a chest pain(19.3%), back pain and shoulder pain (15.9%), edema (12.5%), headache (9.1%), irregular menstruation (8.0%), dyspepsia (8.0%), fatigue (8.0%), insomnia (5.6%), menopausal disorder (4.5%), lumbago (4.5%), abnormal condition of stools (2.3%), and abnormal condition of urine (2.3%). 3) Natural symptom is classified into appetite, digestion, stools, urine, sweat, and sleep. The rate of patients who complained abnormal condition of digestion is 71.6%, of sleep is 59%, of stools is 52.3%, of urine is 47.7%, if sweat is 34.1%, and of appetite is 30.7%. 4) The rate of patients who is treated with Gwanjung-tang between thirty and forty packs is 43.2%, twenty packs is 39.7%, between fifty and sixty packs is 5.7%, between seventy and eighty packs is 2.3%, and between ninety and hundred packs is 3.4%. 5) The rate of patients who is treated with Gwanjung-tang during 15 days is 45.5%, between 16 and 30 days is 26.2%, between 31 and 60 days 7.9%, between 61 and 90 days 3.4%, between 91 and 120 days is 4.5%, and more than 120 days is 12.5%. 6) There are not many cases that chief complain was abnormal condition of digestion (8.0%), sleep (5.6%) stools (2.3%), and urine (2.3%). But the rate of patients who complained discomfort of digestion(71.6%), sleep(59%) stools (52.3%), and urine (47.7%) is significantly high. 7) According to 『Sasang Sin Pyeon』, Gwanjung-tang was used in To-sa-gwak-ran (吐瀉藿亂), Hae-su (咳嗽), Jeok-chui (積聚), Pyo-han -bu-jong (表寒浮腫), Chang-man (脹滿), Chil-gi (七氣), Dam-um (痰飮), Dam-goe (痰塊), Seom-jwa-yo-tong (閃挫腰痛), Bi-tong (臂痛) of Soeumin, and it is corresponds with clinical cases for various components. 4. Conclusions Gwanjung-tang is a medicine of reconciliation, and it makes Stomach to be warm and take down Yin Qi. The most important effect of Gwanjung-tang is Sun-qi(順氣). So it is considerable that Gyejibanhasenggang-tang (少陰人 桂枝半夏生薑湯), Hyangsayangwi-tang (少陰人 香砂養胃湯), and Gwakhyangjunggi-san (少陰人 藿香正氣散) is also effective to symptoms above, because these are medicines of reconciliation

1. Objectives This study aims to find out the factors that affect to healthy level according to Sasang Constitutions by comparing THI health state with Sasang Health Index. 2. Methods One hundred twenty one healthy students from Korean oriental medical colleges participated in this study. We used the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCCⅡ) and expert opinion to diagnose Sasang Constitution, and used Sasang Health Index and THI questionnaire to take health information about Sasang Constitution, from 121 people of Sasang Constitution Information Bank. 3. Results 1) The 'Good Sweat' in Taeumin health level was higher than others, especially in case of 'Refreshness after Sweat' and the 'Good Feces' also higher in case of 'Much Volume in Defecation' 'Regularity in Defecation' 'Refreshness after Evacuation'. 2) The 'Good Feces' in Soyangin health level was higher than others, especially in case of 'Thickness'. 3) The 'Good Digestion' in Soeumin health level was not significantly higher than others. 4) The better symptoms in 'Good Sweat', the better health in Taeumin. 4. Conclusions Sasang Constitution Health Level is significantly related with Sasang Health Index.

1. Objectives When we give Jowiseungcheong-tang to Taeumin patients, analyzing a change of their autonomic nervous system. It is measured by the heart rate variability(HRV) analyzer. 2. Methods We give Jowiseungcheong-tang to ten Taeumin patients for three days and examine the HRV at first time and three days later. 3. Results and Conclusions We compared two HRV results. The value of RRNN(average of normal RR intervals), SDNN(the standard deviation of all normal RR intervals), RMSSD(the root mean square of successive differences between the normal heart beats) have a downward tendency. Norm HF(normalized high frequency power) have a upward tendency. norm LF(normalized low frequency power) and LHR(LF/HF ratio) have a downward tendency. It means hypofunction of autonomic nervous system. But all results are not significant. We think that restudy is needed with more patients and longer periods afterward.

1. Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-aging effect of oral administration with Nocyongdaebo-tang(NYD) decoction in aged rats. 2. Methods The SD rats used in this experiment were 6, 18 and 36 weeks old. A part of the 36weeks was grown to 52 and 68 weeks at labarotary. Each age group was again divided into three groups. These 15 groups consisted of 6 rats each. One group was given no treatment, another group was dosed 200㎕ of normal saline daily, and the last group was dosed 200㎕ of 1% Nocyongdaebo-tang(NYD) and saline mixture. At the conclusion of the experiment, the age groups were relabelled accordingly(10w, 22w, 40w, 52w and 68w). After 4 weeks, the tissue of liver, heart, spleen, lung, kidney and brain was biopsied in order to measure the SOD, GSH, MDA. 3. Results and Conclusions (1) The levels of GSH in the liver were significantly increased in the w-NYD(n=40) and w—NYD(n=68) groups compared with those of the normal groups. The activity of catalase in the liver was also much higher in the w-NYD(n=68) group compared with that of the saline groups. However, the levels of MDA in the liver were significantly decreased in the w-NYD(n=68) group compared with those of the normal and saline groups. (2) The levels of GSH in the spleen were significantly increased in the w-NYD(n=52) and w—NYD(n=68) groups compared with those of the normal and saline groups. (3) The levels of GSH in the lung were significantly increased in the w-NYD(n=40) and w—NYD(n=52) groups compared with those of the normal groups. (4) The levels of GSH in the kidney were higher in the w-NYD(n=40) compared with those of the normal groups and those were also higher in the w—NYD(n=52) groups compared with those of the saline groups, respectively. (5) The levels of GSH in the brain were higher in the w-NYD(n=40) compared with those of the normal groups and those were also higher in the w—NYD(n=52) groups compared with those of the normal and saline groups. (6) Degenerative changes of the brain were decreased in the w-NYD(n=68) group compared with those of the normal and saline groups.These results suggest that oral administration of Nocyongdaebo-tang decoction might have an important role to prevent age-related changes of various organs in aged rats.

1. Objectives The purpose of this study was to observe the anti-oxidant effects of Hyangsayangyi-tang(HY) in SD rats. 2. Methods This experiment was used the tissue of stomach, spleen and pancreas cells of 6, 52 and 68 weeks old SD rats. Each age group was again divided into three groups. One group, as normal group, was not-treated cells, another group, as control group, was saline-treated cells, and the last group, as experimental group, was HY-treated cells. After culture for 48 hours, each groups measured the level of SOD, GSH, MDA and NO in the tissue of stomach, spleen and pancreas cells. 3. Results and Conclusions The activity of SOD were significantly increased in spleen cell of 52, 68 w-HY group, pancreas cell of 68 w-HY group and in stomach cell of 52, 68 w-HY group compared with those of the normal and the control groups. The level of GSH were significantly increased in spleen cell of 52, 68w-HY group and in pancreas cell of 68w-HY group compared with those of the normal and the control groups. The level of MDA were significantly decreased in pancreas cell of 68 w-HY group compared with those of the normal and the control groups. The level of NO were significantly decreased in spleen cell of 68 w-HY group, pancreas cell of 52, 68w-HGD groups compared with those of the control groups. According to results, HY showed anti-oxidant effect. Investigation into the clinical use of the HY is suggested for future research.

Methods This experiment was used the tissue of kidney, bladder and spleen cells of 6, 52 and 68 weeks old SD rats. Each age group was again divided into three groups. One group, as normal group, was not-treated cells, another group, as control group, was saline-treated cells, and the last group, as experimental group, was HG-treated cells. After culture for 48 hours, each groups measured the level of SOD, GSH, MDA and NO in the tissue of kidney, bladder and spleen cells. 3. Results and Conclusions The activity of SOD were significantly increased in kidney cell of 68 w-HGD group, bladder cell of 52 w-HGD group and in spleen cell of 52,68 w-HGD group compared with those of the control groups. The level of GSH were significantly increased in bladder cell of 52w-HGD group and in spleen cell of 68w-HGD group compared with those of the control groups. The level of MDA were significantly decreased in bladder cell of 68 w-HGD group and in spleen cell of 68w-HGD group compared with those of the control groups. The level of NO were significantly decreased in kidney cell of 68 w-HGD group, bladder cell of 52, 68w-HGD groups, and in spleen cell of 68w-HGD group compared with those of the control groups. These results suggest that HGD(Hyeongbangjiwhang-tang) has anti-oxidant effects in aged rats.

Results and Conclusions In liver, the activity of the SOD of 52w-SYG was significantly increased than that of 10w, 22w and 40w-SYG, the level of the GSH of 40w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal group, the activity of the catalase of 68w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal and control group, the level of the MDA of 52w-SYG and 68w-SYG was significantly decreased than that of the normal and control groups. In heart, the level of the GSH of 22w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal and control group. In spleen, the level of the GSH of 52w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal and control group. In lung, the level of the GSH of 52w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal group and the level of 68w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal and control group. In kidney, the level of the GSH of 10w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal group. In brain, the level of the GSH of 68w-SYG was significantly increased than that of the normal and control group. The SYG inhibited the histology degeneration of brain tissue. These results suggest that oral administration of SYG (Sipyimigwanjung-tang) decoction has anti-aging effects in aged rats.

1. Objective Primary aldosteronism is clinically characterized by hypertension and hypokalemia. The purpose of this article is to report our case about a female patient with suspected primary aldosteronism. 2. Methods We diagnosed her as Soyangin Heat Sensation in chest and treated with Yangkyuksanhwa-tang and Hyungbangjihwang-tang. And potassium replacement therapy was applied to correct hypokalemia. 3. Results and Conclusions In this case, through Herb-medication, most symptoms were improved except dry mouth. But hypokalemia was not corrected, and primary aldosteronism was suspected on the basis of the blood results and symptoms.

1. Objectives This case study describes a successful treatment process of a Soyangin patient with somatoform autonomic dysfunction symptoms using Soyangin therapeutic measures, including administration of Dokhwaljihwang-tang (獨活地黃湯) and Sibyimijihwang-tang (十二味地黃湯). 2. Methods The patient was treated with several constitutionally discriminated medicinal agents (獨活地黃湯, 十二味地黃湯) and acupunctural therapy accompanied by simultaneous western medical management. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was applied to assess the severity of flushing. 3. Results and Conclusions As flushing was one of the chief complaints, the patient was treated with Soyangin therapeutic measures including Dokhwaljihwang-tang and Sibyimijihwang-tang. The patient responded positively to the therapy, but further studies are anticipated for more definitive conclusions.

1. Objectives The primary purpose of this case study is to report that a Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome with redness of urine and urination difficulty was treated with 'Soeumin Seungyangikgibuja-tang(升陽益氣附子湯)(SIBT)' and then his symptoms, laboratory test(urine) and urine color improved. 2. Methods The patient has the symptoms including redness of urine, discomfort after urinating, general body sweating, constipation and thirst. We diagnosed him as Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome. So we treated him with 'SIBT(升陽益氣附子湯)'. 3. Results and Conclusions After the constitutional treatment with SIBT(升陽益氣附子湯) on Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome patient, his symptoms and laboratory test(urine) improved and urine color was clear. 'SIBT(升陽益氣附子湯)' is considered to be effective in Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome. The change of urine color can be good evidence for the symtoms of Mang-yang Syndrome is improved.

1. Objectives The purpose of these 2 case studies is to evaluate the effects of Gihwangbeakho-tang which is based on the Sasang Constitutional Medicine for the Herpes zoster. 2. Methods We used Visual analogue sign(VAS) and pictures of the affected part for the assessment. 3. Results After two patients were treated with Gihwangbeakho-tang, the vesicles were cleared and the pain was decreased. 4. Conclusions These 2 case studies show an efficient result of using Gihwangbeakho-tang in the treatment of Herpes zoster. Key Words:Soyangin, Gihwangbeakho-tang, Herpes Zoster

1. Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Gihwangbaekho-tang which is based on the Sasang Constitutional Medicine for the cerebrovascular accident patient who has suffered from dysphasia and dysphagia. 2. Methods The subject is about 69-year-old cerebrovascular accident patient suffering from dysphasia and dysphagia who was diagnosed as Soyangin interior overheated disease based on his nature & emotion, physical chracteristics, symptoms, and we have prescribed Gihwangbaekho-tang. 3. Results and Conclusions Cerebrovascular accident patient is suffering from dysphagia, dysphasia, insomnia, constipation, quadroparesis treated with Gihwangbaekho-tang were improved. This study describes the improvement of dysphagia, dysphasia and other general sypmtoms using Gihwangbaekho-tang. Gihwangbaekho-tang takes effect Soyangin interior overheated disease.

1. Objectives Purpose of this case is to evaluate the effect of Soyangin Yangkyuksanhwa-tang(凉膈散火湯) on the hemichorea caused by hypothalamic infarction. 2. Methods The patient was treated with Yangkyuksanhwa-tang(凉膈散火湯), acupuncture treatment and western medicine. The symptom changes of his hemichorea symptoms were evaluated in hospital. 3. Results and Conclusions After we treated him with Yangkyuksanhwa-tang(凉膈散火湯), his symptoms were decreased.

1. Objectives This is a case of refractory ascites due to hepatocellular carcinoma treated with Sasang Constitutional Medication. Refractory ascites, which did not respond to diuretics, was improved with Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang. 2. Methods We recorded the patient's abdominal circumference, body weight and urine output daily. We also investigated the TTKG(transtubular potassium gradient) values 3 times during the treatment course. 3. Results the TTKG value of the patient was siginificantly decreased. TTKG values before administration of Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang were 8.41, 10.82, respectively and 4.25 after administration of Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang. 4. Conclusions We guess that Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang functions as an aldosterone antagonist or increases spironolactone activity through interaction between Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang and spironolactone. But the mechanism of Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang is not clear, so we need more clinical study of refractory ascites improved with Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang and biological study of interaction between Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang and spironolactone.
