    Tongue of Fatigue by Classification of Sasang Constitution and Qi Blood Pattern Identification

    Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the relevance of Sasang constitution, Qi Blood pattern identification, and tongue diagnosis in subjects complaining of fatigue. Methods Seventy-three subjects who complained of fatigue were assessed using the Chalder Fatigue Scale, tongue diagnosis, pattern identification questionnaire and Sasang constitution diagnosis. The association of tongue diagnosis with Qi Blood pattern identification and Sasang constitution was evaluated. Results 1. There was no significant association between tongue diagnosis and Sasang constitution. 2. Tongue color, which is one of the diagnostic indicators in tongue diagnosis, was redder in the Qi stagnation group than in the Qi deficiency and Blood deficiency groups. Conclusions Tongue diagnosis can be utilized in future if proper research regarding Sasang constitution and Sasang constitution pattern identification is conducted.

    The Status of Constitutional Medical Industry Related to Metabolic Diseases by Web Search

    Objectives To grasp the trend of constitution medical industry related to the metabolic disorders by analyzing the web resource. Methods Web search with the search formula (“constitutional” or “spirit”) and (“Metabolic” or “diabetes” or “high blood pressure” or “hyperlipidemia” or “obesity”) for 20 years (1995.09.10 ~ 2015.09.09.) in the web portal address “”. Results In the search area of news, blogs, cafes and knowledge-in, the number of searched pages retrieved by the word “constitution” was about 1.78 million. In the news 9760 cases of “obesity”, 4046 cases of “hypertension” and 3253 cases of “diabetes” were searched. In Naver Web search Korean medicine clinics related to “constitution” were 24.3%. If we multiple 25.3% to 1000, the actual number of herbal hospitals, The constitution related to Korean medicine clinics is estimated to be approximately 3160 places. Among metabolic disorders, “Overweight”, “Diabetes” and “Hypertension” were most frequently searched. Conclusions Constitutional industry related to metabolic diseases is very actively created on the internet in various areas. Among metabolic diseases, obesity, diabetes, hypertension were found with high frequency.

    Characteristics of Soyang Constitutional Exterior and Interior disease's Favorable-Unfavorable Pattern as Assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI)

    Objectives The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of each Soyang constitutional Exterior and Interior disease's favorable-unfavorable pattern using the Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI) in a Korean adult clinical sample. Methods A total of 32 subjects(age 20-49) completed the Korean version of the TCI. A Sasang Constitutional Medicine specialist determined each subject's Sasang constitutional type based on the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Diagnosis(QSCC∥) and comprehensive constitutional assessment. The participants consisting of 15 favorable pattern, 17 unfavorable pattern. Results Among the four temperament dimensions, the favorable pattern showed significantly higher scores than the unfavorable pattern in Novelty Seeking(NS) and Reward Dependence(RD). Among the three character dimensions, the unfavorable pattern showed significantly higher score than the favorable pattern subjects in Self-Directedness(SD). Conclusions Differences in temperament and character were discovered across the Soyang Constitutional disease's Exterior and Interior disease's favorable-unfavorable pattern.

    6 Cases of Atopic Dermatitis Female Adolescent Patients for Hospitalization

    bjectives This study investigated the effect of camping style Hospitalization program for atopic dermatitis female adolescent patients. 6 patients, 12-14 year old female adolescent, admitted for camping style hospitalization program. Methods 6 patients were admitted for camping style hospitalization program (2014.08.13~2014.08.16). The program included acupuncture, herbal medicine, examination, education, psychotherapy, dressing, exercise. The patients were analyzed by Severity Scoring Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD) index and measured skin pH value(pH). Also, patients evaluated themselves by writing an atopic dermatitis diary which consists of diet, emotion, severity of pruritus, and sleep loss, and checked questionnaires which consist of atopic dermatitis, self treatment methods and degree of satisfaction of each program. Results Most of subjective symptoms which patients complained were improved and also SCORAD index total scores were decreased by sasang constitutional medication. Conclusions We expect that the camping style hospitalization program based on sasang constitutional medicine could be helpful for female adolescent patient of atopic dermatitis.

    A Case Study of Soyangin Patient with Restless Legs Syndrome Treated with Hyeongbangsabaeksan

    Objectives The aim of this study was to report an improvement on the symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) after using Hyeongbangsabaeksan. Methods The patient was diagnosed with Soyangin Soyang-sangpung Symptomatology and treated with Hyeongbangsabaeksan. The patient’s subjective symptoms of pain on the lower limb and discomfort in sleeping were observed using the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) and Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) respectively during the treatment period. And other specific symptoms of RLS were assessed once per week for a total of three times with Korean Versions of the International Restless Legs Scale. Results and Conclusions The pain on the patient's lower limb decreased from NRS 4 to NRS 0 after one week of treatment. And discomfort in sleeping decreased from VAS 5.5 to VAS 0 after one week of treatment. Furthermore, the score of Korean Versions of the International Restless Legs Scale decreased from 40 to 5 after two weeks of treatment. In conclusion, this study shows that Sasang Constitutional Medicine can be an effective treatment for Soyangin patient with Restless Legs Syndrome as Soyangin Soyang-sangpung Symptomatology.

    A Case of Traumatic Subcutaneous Hematoma of Shin in Soyangin

    Objectives The purpose of this study was to report the effects of treatments to traumatic subcutaneous hematoma on the shin using herbal medication and external application without venesection, which had no change in spite of previous 3 weeks medical conservative treatment so it had a risk of sepsis. Methods The patient diagnosed as Soyangin was prescribed with Yangkyuksanhwa-tang. The subcutaneous hematoma lesion was treated by external application of Daehwangchija-san(大黃梔子散). We evaluated the size of hematoma, pain and gait disturbance. Results and Conclusions Subcutaneous hematoma and relevant symptoms disappeared within 11 days of admission. Any kind of sequela did not show up and skin color was recovered after 4 month later follow-up.

    A Case Study of Taeumin Patient with Eosinophilic Colitis Treated with Yeoldahanso-tang

    Objectives The aim of this study was to report an improvement on the symptoms of Eosinophilic Colitis (EC) by Yeoldahanso-tang. Methods The patient was diagnosed with Taeumin Ganyeol-paeJo Symptomatology and treated with Yeoldahanso-tang. The gastroendoscopy and eosinophilic infitration of mucosa of colitis are investigated. Also patient’s subjective symptom of abdominal pain was scored using the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) during the treatment period. And the number of defecation in a day is also used to decide the degree of colitis. Results and Conclusions The patient had been treated from December 13, 2014 to August 8, 2015. Eosinophilic infiltration of colon was disappeared after the treatment although chronic inflammation still existed. Subjective pain of abdominal pain was measured as NRS 6~8 at the beginning of the remedy, but diminished through the treatment sessions and became NRS 0 in the end. The number of defecation was in average 3, and at the endpoint it became 1. In conclusion, this study suggests that Sasang constitutional Medicine used for treating EC of Taeumin may be effective.
