Greeting the 100 year celebration of the death of Master Dong-mu, through investigating his thoght on Scholarship and Philosophy, and his new view of human being based on Sasang, I tried to reevaluate him as a Confucianist of practical mind. The conclusions were as followings ; 1. Dong-mu's recognition system of things is that based on the mind of summarizing things in view of Affair-Mind-Body-Object originated from Confucianism, and It developed "the Marvel of Easiness & simpleness based on Yin-yang" into "the Marvel of Easiness & simpleness based on Sasang" 2 Through understanding old Confucianism newly, Dong-mu summarized human being as having a natural character in view of Nature and Order and an autonomical character in view of Knowledge and Deed, and emphasized an autonomical character in view of Knowledge and Deed 3. In view of Knowledge and Deed, Dong-mu presented How to Say and Behave, and took it as a model of behavior in the new Confucianism. Also he presented the view of Knowledge and Deed based on Constitutions, and took it as a new mind of treatment. 4. Dong-mu can be estimated highly, in that he completed a new confucian view-point of Human being in the period of philosophic chaos, and executed the mind of General health maintenance and the mind of control others through a confucian self-control.

1. Background and Purpose : 『Dong Eui Sa Sang Sin Pyun』 is the one of widely used medical books in the Sasang Constitucional Medicine Academy, but there was not enough study of the author. Through the research of the 『Won Ji-Sang』, the Author, We highly intent to utilize the book 『Dong Eui Sa Sang Sin Pyun』. 2. Methods : We arranged Won Ji-Sang's life style with investigation of the Won Yong-Sa(Won Ji-Sang's daughter), Survivors's verbal evidence and related books. 3. Results and Conclusion : 1) Won Ji-Sang's Childhood Name was "Ill Sang", Pseudonym was "Duck Pil", Pen Name was "Sung Am". He was born in "Bong Yang Myune, Je Chon Gune, Chung Buk" at 1885's June 1st of the lunar calendar and moved to "Yeo Ju Gune, Kyung Gi Do" at 1910's, and passed away in "Nae Sa Ree, Whung Chun Myune, Yeo Ju Gune, Kyung Gi Do" at 1962's June 2'nd of the lunar calender, when he was 78s. 2) The outline of philosophy of Won Ji-Sang's was based of "Wha Seo Doctrinal Faction's ideology", which was connected with Kim Pyong-Muk, Yu Jung-Kyo, Lee Gun-Won, Rue Rin-Suk. 3) 『Dong Eui Sa Sang Sin Pyun』 was published in 1929's when Won Ji-Sang was 45s. However, we couldn't find out how Won Ji-Sang got to know Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and whether or not he had relation with Dong Mu Lee Je-Ma. 4) Won Ji-Sang's medical experience might be started before he was 45, and real medical treatment began when he was 66.

Purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between Sung-Jung' concept of Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Brain. So, After studying the meaning of Sung-Jung' concept of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, I made a comparative study through the structure, function, development of Brain. The conclusions were as follows. 1. Human's brain acts a rational, control his actions. and It manage human body's physiology and pathology. and It perceive his surroundings, express his emotion through comprehension, synthesis, judgement about information from various fields. and It's abnormality bring about a spiritual, bodily injury. Therefore, human's brain have many correlation with Sung-Jung' concept of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 2. Neocortex' function have many correlation with Sung' concept of Hearing-Sight-Smell-Taste (聽視嗅味=sensation=a highly mental capacity) through Ear-Eye-Nose-Mouse(耳目鼻口). 3. Limbic-system'function have many correlation with Jung' concept of Sorrow-Anger-Pleasure-Joy(哀怒喜榮=emotion) through Lung-Spleen-Liver-Kidney(肺脾肝腎) 4. Brain-stem' function have many correlation with vitalistic concept through Qui of Sorrow - Anger - Pleasure - Joy(哀怒喜樂之氣)' rise and fall. 5. Relation of emotions and diseases through Limbic system and Autonomic nervous system have many correlation with relation of Sung-Jung and diseases of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 6. Left-hemisphere' function that has superior power of verbal, analysis, logicality, consideration have many correlation with tendency of Soeumin and Taeumin. and Right-hemisphere' function that has superior power of emotion, non-verbal, imagination, spatial perception have many correlation with tendency of Soyangin and Taeyangin.

Background and Purpose ; Sasang Constitutional medicine is dividing individual's constitutions into four categories. Determination of an individual's constitution however, can be different according to what diagnostic standards apply. In this study, We investigated how different the applying results of the three diagnostic standards-the yong-mo(容貌), the body type(體形), and the mind(心性)-are and what the inter-diagnostic standard agreement is. Methods ; 36 patients in cerebral-infarction, admitted into the Dong-Eui Korean hospital from 1. May. 2000 to 12. October. 2000, were diagnosed by three diagnostic standards - the yong-mo(容貌), the body type(體形), and the mind(心性). Each patient was treated by Sasang constitutional medicine. The agreement of the final constitutional diagnosis and the result of each diagnostic standard was analyzed. Results 1. The number of Taeeumin was 13(40.6%), Soyangin was 10(31.3%), Soeumin was 9(28.1%). 2. In terms of analysis on the agreement of the final constitutional diagnosis and the result of each diagnostic standard, the yong-mo(容貌) showed the highest agreement of 93.8%, followed by 68.8% of the mind(心性), and the body type(體形) showed the lowest agreement of 53.1%. 3. The yong-mo(容貌) standard showed high diagnostic rate of the three constitutions(Soyangin, Taeeumin, Soeumin) generally and diagnostic rate of Soeumin was especially high. The body type(體形) standard showed low diagnostic rate of Taeeumin, and high diagnostic rate of Soeumin. The mind(心性) standard showed low diagnostic rate of Soeumin. 4. In terms of analysis on the agreement of inter-diagnostic standard result, the yong-mo(容貌) and the mind(心性) show the highest agreement, the mind(心性) and the body type(體形) showed the lowest agreement. 5. If the results come out that the three diagnostic standards have no concentration on one constitution, it was effective to choose the result of the yong-mo(容貌) standard. If it is the case the result of inter-diagnostic standard agreed more than two, it was better to follow the two agreed result than to follow the result of one specific characteristic standard.

Purpose This study is intended to catch the expansion of theory of Sasang Constitutional Medicine through comparison prescription of Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen with prescription of Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Method I studied the archive of prescription and medicines concerned in the Sasang-Yihak- Chobonguen with Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Result and conclusion 1. The base of theory on prescription of Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen is based on Naesang -oigam theory but the base of theory on prescription of Dongyi-Soose-Bowon is based on Pyoribyung theory of Sasang constitutional Medicine. 2. Medicines are confused in prescription of Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen but medicines are not confused in prescription.

Sweating is a important concept with Sasang Constitutional Medicine After studying about sweating of four constitutions, I can get a conclusion. It is summarized as follows. 1. In Taeyangin(太陽人) and Taeumin(太陰人) sweating can be explained by symptom of Kiekjiki(氣液之氣), and can be explained by symptom of Suekjiki(水液之氣) in Soeumin(少陰人) and Soyangin(少陽人) 2. Sweating of Soeumin(少陰人) is a expression of strength or weakness of Bijang(脾臟) 3. Sweating of Soyangin(少陽人) is a expression of Kangeum(降陰) and Yangyak(陽弱) 4. Sweating of Taeumin(太陰人) is a expression of Paejang(肺臟)'s function

1. Object of research Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun and DongmuYugo were written by Lee je-ma befare Dongyi Soose Bowon. He explained in full detail Sasang Constitutional symtoms more than symtoms in Dongyi Soose Bowon. I tried to find his early medical views on Sasang Constitutional disease. 2. Method of research It was researched as contents with his writing surh as Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun and DongmuYugo. 3. Results and conclusions ① Dongmu was tried to explain the Sasang Constitutional physiological and pathological symtoms with ordinary symtoms. It is a his own implementation that he made an analysis of Sasang Constitutional symtoms. ② We can take advantage of the contents clinically which has full of expression that there is a difference between the constitutional symtoms. ③ It is a guide post that can be expected the appearance of disease even if it were not in poor health

The problem lies in 'Sasang Constitution Medicine' is a subjectiveness of diagnosis that the result of diagnosis varies according to the doctors. In order to supplement to this demerit, multiple approach has done to diagnose objectively. This study has focused on evaluating the effectiveness and accuracy of the questionnaire which considered as a basic data to identify constitution By analysing the tendency of the respondents who has defined constitution by clinical diagnosis and comparing of their answers, the result of their constitution analysis by our questionnaire were re-examined. The answer of each question to each constitution were tested how it is relevant to a scale of a constitution. As a result, we have found that there is limitation to find out constitution by the questionnaire we used, one we hope that suitable questionnaire will be developed for the research in the future

The purpose of this study is to examine validity to Soeum scales by QSCC II. For this study, the objects are 336 patients who were made a diagnosis of Soeumin and 422 patients of other constitutions in Oriental Medicine & Western Medicine Cooperative Health Examination Center KyungHee University Medical Center. A systematic analysis has been made and the results are as follows. 1. We made a frequency analysis in 758 examinees' questions and concluded that 35 questions, among which 30 questions were existing and 5 were new, had statistical significance in making a diagnosis of Soeumin by more than 10% in comparison with answer frequency of other constitutions. 2. Because confidence coefficient of 0.8011 revised Soeum scales(35) rises up as compared with that of 0.6319 existing Soeum scales(51), I think revised Soeum scales reflect trait of Soeumin well and it is liable to shorten question time by controling questions. 3. Soeumin's discrimination probability in Soeumin was 55.4% by QSCCII, but that rises up to 64.3% by discriminant function made by revised Soeum scales. So there is statistical significance in discriminant function. 4. When questions in QSCCII are divided into body-spirit(體形氣像), looks-attitude(容貌詞氣), temper- talent(性質才幹), continuous mind(恒心), avarice(心慾), physiological symptoms(生理的 證) and pathological symptoms(病理的 證), response frequency and constitution discrimination probability falls in questions about avarice and pathological symptoms.

This study aimed at figuring out the relations on Sasang Constitutions, and personality traits. Four hundred fourteen university students were tested by, QSCCII, NEO-Pl-R Korean version. It is analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan post hoc multiple comparisons with Spss 9.0. Following questions should be answered in this study. Are they any differences in the personality traits in accordance with Sasang Constitutions? The result of this study are follows; It is ascertained to find out personality trait by Sasang Constitutions. In other word, they have differences in personality traits(factor of N: Neuroticism, E: Extroversion, C: Conscientiousness) in accordances with Sasang constitutions by QSCCII.

1. Background and Purpose The faces of human being change as they grow older. Therefore, we must consider the changes of the face when we diagnosed the Sasang Constitution of men through the analysis of facial appearance. As a study of all the standardization researches about the morphology of face, I carried out this study about the 50's and 60's of Korean men and women according to Sasang Constitution. 2. Objectives The object of this study is selected from the patients who were already diagnosed Sasang Constitutions at the department of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center. The number of the patients were 74 men and 73 women in 50's and 60's. The number of general age group were 182 men and 180 who were also diagnosed Sasang Constitutions at the department of Sasang Constitutional Medicine at the same period. 3. Method I took the photographs of front view and lateral view of the objectives by digital camera and obtained the 200 measure through the facial measurement program. I compared the measure of 50's and 60's by three constitutional groups and I also compared the measure between 50's to 60's and all ages by three constitutional groups. 4. Results In men group, the measures which made differences by each constitutional groups were 17, and they were 6 in 50's and 60's. In women group, the measures which made differences by each constitutional groups were 52, and they were 33 in 50's and 60's 5. Conclusion ① In the men group of 50's and 60's, Taeumin showed wide bigonial breadth, Soyangin showed long brow and Soumin showed big eyes. ② In the women group of 50's and 60's, Taeumin showed the longest level of facial length, width and metopion head length, Soyangin showed metopion head length was long and the nose was also long, Soumin showed the ratio of brow in the face didn't make any difference with other constitutions and the metopion head length was short. ③ The measures which made differences were more in the all ages than in the 50's and 60's. It means that the differences decrease as they grow older, especially in 50's and 60's.

Purpose In Sasang Constitution Medicine, persons are divided into four types such as Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin and Soeumin according to their appearance, moral nature and characteristic of constitutional symptoms. In teenager group, diagnosis of constitution based on their appearance was so difficult that we adopted new diagnostic method which measures and compares body compositions. Methods 180 middle school students who live in Pusan were studied from 20th of March, 1999 to 20th of March, 2000. After practicing Questionnaire(I), QSCC(Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution) I , QSCCII, we have measured the height and body compositions with Inbody 3.0, five times. Results 1. The results of Sasang Constitution analysis showed 91 students were classified as Taeumin(50.3%), 75 as Soyangin(41.4%), 14 as Soeumin(7.7%), and 1 as Taeyangin(0.6%). 2. The level of total body water, muscle area, BMR(Basal Metabolic Rate), BCM(Body Cell Mass), and AMC(Arm Muscle Circumference) were increased during spring and summer. That of body weight, fat body weight, fat body weight ratio, waist hip ratio, and BMI(Body Mass Index were increased during fall and winter. 3. In Taeumin and Soyangin groups, the changed capacity of total body water, muscle area and BMR were increased with statistical significance. 4. Waist hip ratio of Soeumin group was reduced more than those of Taeumin, Soyangin groups with statistical significance.

1. Background and Purpose The faces of human being change as they grow older. We could know the characters of the each ages, through the facial comparison between the 30's, 40's and the 50's, 60's. As a conclusion, I carried out this Study because I thought that the errors of diagnosis would be reduced a lot through the standardization researches about the morphology of faces. 2. Objectives The object of this study is selected from the patients who were already diagnosed Sasang Constitutions at the department of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center. The number of the patients were 69 men in 30's and 40's, and 74 men in 50's and 60's. 3. Method I took the photographs of front view and lateral view of the objectives by digital camera and obtained the 200 measure through the facial measurement program. I compared the measure of 50's and 60's with 30's and 40's by independant t-test. 4. Results 28 measures are different 30's and 40's with 50's and 60's in Soyangin, 31 measures in Soeumin, 40 measures in Taeumin. 5. Conclusion ① Soyangin showed wider interpupillary distance in 30's and 40's than 50's and 60's. They also showed the large brow and cheek and their lips were thick and prominent and their ophyrion were prominent and their noses were wide and large and they showed wide bigonial breadth in 30's and 40's than 50's and 60's. ② Soeumin showed the position of ears were higher and the brows were longer and larger in 30's and 40's than 50's and 60's. The width of both eyebrow were wider in 50's and 60's than 30's and 40's. The lower 2/3 portion of the face was longer and the shape of head was longer in vertical in 50's and 60's than 30's and 40's. ③ Taeumin showed the wider brow in 30's and 40's than 50's and 60's. The width of each eyes was wider and the width of cheek and face was larger, too. The ophyrion was prominent and the mouth was bigger and the face showed longer in 50's and 60's than 30's and 40's. ④ The upper 1/3 portion of the face was large in 30's and 40's and the lower 2/3 portion of the face showed large and long in 50's and 60's regardless Constitution.

1. Purpose This studies the regulatory effect of cytokine production in Soyangin patients with cerebral infarction by Yangkyuksanhwatang. 2 Method ELISA 3. Result & Conclusion Yangkyuksanhwatang(YST) is a prescription for the cerebral infarction (CI) patients of Soyangin according to Sasang constitution philosophy. Soyangin patients with CI were treated with YST during the acute stage. Clinical signs of CI disappeared markedly in about 2 to 4 weeks after oral administration of YST in all patients. The mean interleukin (IL)-2 plasma levels were slightly lower in the patients with CI than in the normal groups, whereas the mean IL-4, IL-6 and IgE levels were significantly higher in the patients. There were no significant differences in interferon- γ (IFN- γ) levels between the groups. Serum IFN- γ and IL-2 levels derived from T helper (Th)1 cells were elevated significantly in the patients with CI by YST administration. Significant reduced plasma levels of IL-4 and IL-6 derived from Th2 cells and IgE were observed in the patients treated with YST. During the period of YST administration, there were no other adverse effects. The data indicate that YST has a good CI treatment effect, and that its action may be due to regulation of cytokine production.

Purpose : Studies on the Regulatory Effect of Cytokine Production in Taumin Patients with Cerebral Infarction by Cheongsimyeonjatang Method : ELISA(enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay) Result : Chungsimyeunjatang(CYT) is a prescription for the cerebral infarction (CI) patients of Taeumin according to Sasang constitution philosophy. Taeumin patients with CI were treated with CYT during the acute stage. Clinical signs of CI disappeared markedly in about two to four weeks after oral administration of CYT in all patients. The mean interleukin (IL)-2 plasma levels were slightly lower in the patients with CI than in the normal groups, whereas the mean IL-4, IL-6 and IgE levels were significantly higher in the patients. 1. Back ground and purpose An experimental study has done to examine the effect of defense and cure gastric mucasal damage of Mokdan-pijihwang-tang. 2. Methods Mice had intragastric injected with MJ extract before indomethacin treatment which induces homorrhage infarct and erosion artificially. Degree of lipid peroxidation, general morphology, change of mucous cell, the distribution of PNA, ICAM and distribution of apoptotic cell were objected. (Abbreviation) MJ : Mokdanpijihwang-tang, PNA : Peanut Agglutinin, ICAM : Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 3 Results 1) The degree of lipid peroxidation in INDO-group had increased conspicuously than control group. But the degree of lipid peroxidation in MJ-group had decreased than INDO-group and these decline had probability. 2) After indomethacin treatment, hemorrhage infarct and erosion had increased in stomach body. But in MJ-group, the configuration is normal, except the group intragastric injected with MJ extract at hour 24 before indomethacin treatment. 3) Surface mucous cell and neck mucous had disappeared in INDO-group. But in MJ-group tormal distribution had shown like control group except the group intragastric injected with MJ extract at hour 24 before indomethacin treatment. 4) PNA positive reaction had not shown in INDO-group. But medium PNA positive reaction had shown In Mj-group. 5) ICAM positive reacted cell had shown in INDO-group. The decrease of ICAM positive cell were shown than INDO-group. 6) A number of apoptotic cell was distributed in hemorrhagic erosion. A few number of apoptotic cell was distributed in MJ-group except some surface mucous. 4. Conclusion These results suggest that MJ has an effect on cure of gastric mucosal damage.

1.Purpose This study was researched in order to investigate the effect of Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami and Kamsuchunilhwan on the obesity in rats. 2. Methods The rats were divided into 10 groups - The normal group fed with normal diet. One of the sample groups fed with high fat diet, and since fifth week had fed with Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami. The other sample groups fed with high fat diet, and since fifth week had fed with Kamsuchunilhwan. The control group fed with high fat diet, and since fifth week had fed sodium chloride. 3. Results 1. The rate of increasing weight was significantly decreased after oral administration of Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami and Kamsuchunilhwan. 2. The rate of feeding effect was not significantly decreased after oral administration of Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami and Kamsuchunilhwan. 3. After oral administration of Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami, the quantities of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride on the serum were significantly decreased but that of lipid peroxide on the serum was significantly increased. 4. After oral administration of Kamsuchunilhwan., the quantities of glucose, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride on the serum were significantly decreased but those of HDL cholesterol, lipid peroxide on the serum were significantly increased. 4.Conclusion Hyungbangdojucksan-Gami and Kamsuchunilhwan have significant effects on the obesity in the rats.

For many patients suffered from a terminal cancer, the best care is to extend a period and improve a quality of life. So that the pain, a major symptom of patients with terminal cancer, should be effectively controled. Otherwise it causes anorexia, nausea, vomiting, general weakness, loss of body weight, insomnia and becomes worse the condition of patients. The case is a report about a patient diagnosed as terminal gastric cancer and suffered abdominal pain. The patient was treated by Taeumin Chongsim Yonja Tang and the abdomnal pain decreased. This report described the process and contents about the way the patient was cured.

Intestinal tuberculosis is an chronic infectious disease and occur insidiously. 29-years-old woman who has abdominal pain and diarrhea is admitted and we have diagnosed her as Soeumin and treated by east and west integrated therapy. The results is as following, first Pyobyung(表病) and Ribyung(裏病) occur anytime without development of a disease(傳變), second Byungjeung(病證) is occured according to Sojeung(素證), third we decide the severity of Byungjeung(病證) in according to the shape and period of stool, forth we find that Byungjeung(病證) is change from Teaeumjeung(太陰證) to Soeumjeung(少陰證) during west medical therapy

The Yangdokbalban(陽毒發斑) of Taeumin(太陰人) is classed as Gansuyoilliyoilbyung(肝受熱裏熱病). This is a kind of dermatitis caused by Ganyoilpaejo(肝熱肺燥) what was risen from disorder of Simyok(心慾). In the treatment, we should temper the Simyok and recover Hosanjigy(呼散之氣) of Lung by Cheongganjoyoil(淸肝燥熱). In this study, it is experienced that Yangdokbalban of Taeumin patient mistreated with Soyangin, got sick by Korean medical treatment, and also it came to improve the psychosomatic disorder(心身症) generally. The patient was 52 years old, female. She entered our hospital for Yangdokbalban, including serious itching, insomnia, chest discomfort, dyspepsia, pantalgia, and she had neutropenia in the blood test. We classified this as Taeumin-liyoiljung(太陰人 裏熱證) and prescribed Galgunhaegitang(葛根解肌湯) and Chungsimyoinjahabopaewontang(淸心蓮子合補肺元湯) in according to the principle of Cheongganjoyoil. In the result, we had the general improvement of Yangdokbalban and psychosomatic disorder.
