Background and Purpose Through 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』, Dongmu Lee Je-ma supposed the minds of management for Sasang Constitutional Symptoms, which had been accomplished through several steps from his early writings to 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901. His basic minds of treatment for disease had been supposed early in 『Gyojapyungseongjam』 and 『Gyukchigo』, and had been completed to the Sasang Constitutional Symptoms and the minds of management for it, from 『Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun』, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 written in 1894 to 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901. In this paper, I tried to find the minds of treatment of 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』, through classifying and researching the early minds of treatment (presented in 『Gyojapyungseongjam』, 『Gyukchigo』, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun』), and the latter minds of treatment (presented in 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 written in 1894, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901) Methods It was researched as bibliologically with his writings such as 『Gyojapyungseongjam』, 『Gyukchigo』, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun』, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 written in 1894, 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901. Results and Conclusions The conclusions were as follows. 1. At early, Dongmu Lee Je-ma pursued the minds of treatment at the autonomous control through 'Acquaintance and Self-control' based on 'the Knowledge of Nature and Desire', so emphasized 'self-control' as important point in treatment. 2. From 『Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun』, Dongmu summarized Sasang constitutional symptoms structurally in view of Morpho-imaginary. In 『Dongyi Soose Bowon Sasang Chobongyun』 and 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 written in 1894, It was described in view of small organ, but in 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901, suggested more updated in view of both large and small organ and to which added the concept of Hot and Cold. 3. Through reinterpreting the concept of interior and exterior disease in 『Sanghanrhon』, the concept of Sasang constitutional symptoms had started as the minds of treatment for individual disease, but in 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901, it was accomplished as the minds of broad management for Sasang Constitutional Symptoms. 4. In 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901, the broad therapeutic prescriptions for management of Sasang constitutional symptoms were proposed newly, according to the accomplishment of Sasang constitutional symptomatic patterns, so these have different aims and are more important than that proposed previously. 5. The control in view of 'Knowledge and Deed' and the minds of management for Sasang constitutional symptoms are the minds and spirits for treantment and prevention against disease, which can maximize the power of autonomous self-treatment and manage all disease broadly.

1. Purpose This paper was written in order to understand the concept of 「DongMuYooGo YakSungGa」(東武遺稿 藥性歌) which was descending as the material of Sasang pharmacology. So we are planning to make use of the fundamental material of the study on the Sasang Medications and Prescriptions. 2. Methods Through comparing each clause of 「DongMuYooGo YakSungGa」 on all the sasang -records, we understood that concept. 3 Result 1) 「DongMuYooGo YakSungGa」 of a literary work of DongMu(東武) which contain special elucidative-method of herb-nature has 18 type of YakSungGa which explain each 27 herbs for the Taeeumin, Soyangin and Soeumin. The period of authoship is supposed to the time just before 「DongyiSuseBowon Gabobon」(東醫壽世保元 甲午本)(1894, DongMu 58 years old) or middle of fifties(53-57 years old). 2) YakSungGa of 「DongMuYooGo」 which is published by the BoGunsung(保健省) of North Korea is supposed to close to original type. The main meaning of that is the herb-nature which works on the weakst point of each Sasangin. And then the herbs were classfied by the diseases and symptoms possessing Bomyungjiju(保命之主), the herb's efficacy is explained at the each constitution. 3) The meaning of 「DongMuYooGo YakSungGa」 is exposure of the opinion of DongMu's early stage that proposed herb-nature which is applied to the principle of Jang(臟) of Sasangin, reason and purpose to enact newly created prescriptios by the constitutional diseases and symptoms, and the compositional principle of newly created prescription. 4) The selection of herbs or cogution of herb-nature of DongMu's pharmacological opinion of his early stage was changed by accumulating clinical experience. So all the newly created prescriptios of 「DongyiSuseBowon」 could not be explained by only the herb and the herd-nature on 「DongMuYooGo YakSungGa」. Therefore the purpose of DongMu's YaksungGa is not explaining the symptoms in charge of each herb or classifying the herb by constitution, but offering the principle of composition of prescription of Sasang, from the necessary herb which possess and expand Bomyungjiju to nature of herb which is applied to the constitution for treating all the diseases and sypmtoms by the heavy or light and slow or speedy.

1. Background and Purpose Since 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 was published in 1929, it had great effects on the publications related to Sasang Constitutional Medicine. However there had been no practical research or its applications about 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 at all in spite of its importance. So through the study on the 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 we highly intend to utilize the book. 2. Methods In this dissertation, you'll find our research of 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 regarding the author, the people who were involved in the publishing, the formations and the contents, our another research of 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun Chebang』(東醫四象新編劑方) to make its medical characteristics and meaning clear. 3. Results and Conclusion 1) Won Chi Sang was Chang Bong Young's granduncle's son-in-law. Nam Dae-hee is suspected of Nam Tae-hee who lived in YeoJu Bam Gol at that time though, it's not certain. 2) 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 is consisted of two parts. 「The Internal part」 is the basic explanation and 「The External part」, is the prescriptions depending on the symptoms. 「Sasang Byunron」(四象辯論) is mostly that's for the explanations about analysis of Sasang Constitution. 「Sasang Kyunghum」(四象經驗) is mainly it's for the prescriptions depends on Sasangin's symptoms. 「Sasang Kukyul」(四象口訣), 「Tong Sasang Changbu Sochaedo」(通四象臟腑所在圖), 「Tong Sasang Chunche Sosokdo」(通四象全體所屬圖) are about the analysis of Sasangin's characteristics from metaphysical concepts to Changbustic concepts. In 「Sasangin oyak」(四象人要藥), among them, 10 types of medicines were categorized separately by constitutional difference in 『Dongui Sasang Shinpyun』 and 『Dongmu Yougo』(東武遺槁). The unique style of 「Dongyi Sasang Yongyak Huebun」(東醫四象用藥索分) is originated from 『Bangyak Happyun』「Euibang Whaltu」(『方藥合編』「醫方活套」), 「Whaltu Chimsun」,(『方藥合編』「活套鍼線」). 3) There are 293 prescriptions in 「Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun Chebang」. 36 out of 44 prescriptions in 『Gapobon』(甲午本) are quoted in 「kyunghumbang」. Therefore it could be very possible that those unknown prescriptions in 「Kyunghumbang」 can be from lee Je Ma. 4) We are assumed that 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 was made by some other doctors not from one single person, based on Lee Je Ma's prescriptions, after Lee Je Ma died. 5) 『Dongyi Sasang Shinpyun』 is very different from 『Dongeyi Suse Bowon』, 『Dongmu Yougo』(東武遺稿). 『Chobonkwun』(草本卷) by lee Je Ma since it was published for utilizing Sasang Constitutional Medicine and medical practice not for the basic principles of Sasang Constitution by Lee Je Ma. Therefore it could be highly possible to look over the spirit of Sasang Constitution by lee Je-ma.

The purpose of this article was to compare 'The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Disease' of 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 written in 1894(Old Edition(舊本)) with that of 『Dongyi Soose Bowon』 published in 1901(In Edition(印本)), and to find the idea of pathologic mechanism and classification of 'the Exterior and Interior disease'. The conclusions were as follows. 1. The classification of constitutional symptoms and disease of Soeumin and Soyangin in 'Old Edition(舊本)' was almost equal to that in 'In Edition(印本)' 2. In pathological mechanism of constitutional symptoms and disease of Soeumin and Soyangin, 'The Exterior Disease' could be explained as the disease resulted from fight between 'Yang-chi(陽氣)(Hot-chi(熱氣))'of 'Thoracic vertebrae' and 'Yin-chi(陰氣)(Cold-chi(寒氣))' of 'Bladder' and 'The Interior Disease' between 'Hot-chi(熱氣)(Stomach-chi(胄氣))' of 'Stomach' and 'Cold-chi(寒氣)' of 'Large intestine'. 3. 'The Exterior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之表病)' could be explained as the disease occurring at the Branch portion(large portion)(標) by overcoming of Pathogenic factors but Vital energy still sufficient, and 'The Interior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之裏病)' occurring at Root portion(small portion)(裏) by invasion of Pathogenic factors and Vital energy almost exhausted. 4. In the classification of constitutional symptoms and disease of Taeumin, 'The Exterior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之表病)' in 'Old Edition(舊本)' were rearranged to 'The Exterior Disease' in 'In Edition(印本)', 'The Interior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之裏病)' to 'The Interior Disease'. 5. It was assumed that 'The Exterior and the Interior Disease' of Taeumin could be explained in relation between the exterior and e interior, based on the Healthy energy(保命之主) and e concept of the Branch and the Root portion

1. Purpose 'Gu-Bon' of 『Soose Bowon』 found lately was written in 1940, through comparing with 'Gu-Bon' and 'In-Bon'. In 'Gu-Bon' and 'In-Bon', there are many different contents. The aim of the present study was to find changes of Dong-Mu's recognition on Symptom of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease from 1894 to 1900 2. Methods Comparing with 'Gu-Bon' and 'In-Bon' on Symptom of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease, Mechanism · region · main symptom and treatment of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease are arranged. and changes of Dong-Mu's recognition on Symptom of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease from 1894 to 1900 was found 3. Results 1) In 'Gu-Bon' of 『Soose Bowon』, Dong-mu recognized Symptom of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease, mainly through the conception of 'ventral-dorsal--interior-exterior' and 'Main Qi of life protection' 2) In 'In-Bon' of 『Soose Bowon』, Dong-mu recognized Symptom of Soeumin's Disease and Soyangin's Disease, mainly through the conception of 'ventral-dorsal-interior-exterior' and 'Ascending of Yang-Qi and Descending of Yin-Qi' 3) In 'Gu-Bon' of 『Soose Bowon』, Symptom of Soeumin's Disease was classified into 'Taeyang Disease' and 'Yang-myoung Disease'. But In 'In-Bon' of 『Soose Bowon』, Symptom of Soeumin's Disease was classified into 'Mang-yang' and 'Ul-guang'

1. Background and Purpose At the year of 2000, the society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine acquired 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』 which is seen as a written copy of 『GaboBon』. According to Lee Sung-su who is the great-grandson of DongMu's older brother, 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』 was worked by Lee Jin-yoon who is the grandson of DongMu's older brother, and it was copied by Han Min-gab and now is owned by Lee Sung-su who is son of Lee Jin-yoon. 2. Methods This paper was written in order to understand of the character of the discourse on the medications and prescriptions of the 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』. 3. Result and Conclusion 1) Newly created prescriptions of 『GaboBon』 is composed of the 125 medications of Soeumin 46, Soyangin 36, Taeumin 29, Taeyangin 14. Regarding with that prescriptions, the average number of the medications per prescription is 9.3 and the average capacity of that is 42.6gram. 2) The experimental prescription is from 『GaboBon』. All the 37 prescriptions of 『Sanghanlon』 is found at the text of 『GaboBon』, and only 12 of 37 prescriptions of Traditional Medicine excepting 『Sanghanlon』 is described at the text of it. Hardly any case of treatment by Traditional Prescription can be found at the discourse on constitunal symptoms and diseases. 3) Only 13 of 69 newly created prescriptions is not prescribed at 『GaboBon』, and 7 of the 13 prescriptions don't have the symptom of charge also. 4) 6 prescriptions which are supposed to newly created prescriptions of 「The Discourse on Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases」 are not describe to the composition of medications. 5) All the newly created prescriptions of 「The General Remarks on the Soeumin」 of 「SinChucBon」 are to be regarded as GaboBon's.

But hardly any clause or text of the GaboBon excepting 『DongyiSooseBowon』 has been described. Result and Conclusion 1) It is reasonable that 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』 had copied to the original 『DongyiSoose Bowon GaboGubon』 which was written by DongMu. 2) We can find the character of 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』 as follows. (1) It has the table of contents, the definition of the number of the texts, and the article number of each texts. (2) 『KyungJaBon』 and 『SinchukBon』 has different number of the texts about 『The general remarks on the Soyangin』. (3) It is different with original 『GaboBon』 because of the extracting marks of the text. (4) It is supposed that it has the pares which was additionally or wrongly amended by someone. 3) We can consider that the character of original 『GaboBon』 which was written by DongMu from 『HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon』 as follows. (1) 「The Discourse on Nature and Order」∼「The Discourse on the Four Principles」 is original articles of 『GaboBon』. (2) The head title of 「The Discourse on the Origin of Oriental Medicine」 was not in 『GaboBon』. (3) It is not clear whether 「The Discourse on the General Health Maintenance」 and 「The Discourse on Identifying Four Constitutions」 is original texts or amended texts of 『GaboBon』. So it is required more study about it.

1. Purpose This study is intended to catch the expasion of theory of Sasang Constitutional Medicine through Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon with Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon 2. Method I studied the archive of prescription and medicines concerned in the Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon with Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon 3. Result and conclusion 1. The principle which select the Sasang-in Prescription in Dongmuyugo is Hyung-Choei-Eik-Mi(馨臭液味) and Seung-Gang-Gae- Hap(升降開闔) 2. The same Medicine in Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon and Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon is 27 and this medicines are the principle medicine in the Taiyin Disease 3. The same Herb-Medication in the Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon is 4 and the concept in the Sasang-Yihak-Chobonguen is succeded to Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon 4. The same Herb-Medication in the Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon is 7 and the Change between the Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Gapobon and Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon is the cognition between the Pyozeung(表證) and Lizeung(裏證) in the disease 5. There is no same Herb-Medication in that three books. This result can prove that the Dongyi-Soose-Bowon Chopanbon's New Herb-Medication(新定方) was made in the last stage of Sassng-Yihak

The purpose of this research was to investigate the inhibitory function among foods and herb drugs. I have gone over literatures of mainly ≪Eum-Sun-Jung-Yo(飮膳正要)≫ on the basis of ≪Dong-Eui-Bo-Gam (東醫寶鑑)≫ about the properties and flavors of foods and herb drugs. And then I came to get some conclusion as follows. 1. The foods mentioned above are meats, birds, fishes, spices and vegetables. 2. If the foods mentioned above were eaten for a long time, and then it can cause stirring Wind or Qi or Fire inside the body. 3. What it means in the context of the chapter 『Sik-Mul-Sang-Ban : Inhibitory Function Among Foods and Herb Drugs(食物相反)』 that "Do not eat the paired foods or herb drugs at a same time" and "Do not eat the paired foods or herb drugs together for a long time." 4. The Cold natured foods were not eaten at a same time. 5. The Hot or Warm natured foods were not eaten at a same time. 6. The contrary natured foods were not eaten at a same time. Because they were eaten at a same time, it raise a Occurrence of Cold and Heat syndromes and a Qi disorder.

1. Background Among the clinical application of Sasang Constitutional diagnostic methods, a morphologic study of face is recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare as a legitimate Hanbang diagnostic method. But there are some indirect different view about this method. We should criticize this method for the better. 2. Method We criticize the current morphologic study of face by its literature basis, its measurement and its result, compared with 『Dongyisoosebowon』 and other related literatures. 3. Conclusions We suggest thar the current morphologic study of face is not proper for the clinical application of Sasang Constitutional diagnostic method in the point of the lack of literature basis and the intervention of the examiner's subjectivities.

By the increasing concern about Sasang Constitution Medicine, its practical use is considered very important in disease prevention and medical treatment. However, the method of constitution classification is depending on the doctor's clinical trials because of the lack of the objective test criteria. This study is trying to improve the objectiveness of diagnosis using a new statistical method, decision tree. Decision tree method-a classification technique in the statistical analysis- was used to analyze the result of QSCCII instead of using discriminant analysis. As a result, 16 among 121 QSCCII questions was selected as important questions and 21 terminal nodes was built to classify the constitution. Using only 16 questions shown in the result of decision tree, we can diagnose and interpret the constitution easily and effectively.

This study started from the curiasty that Sasang Constitution spirit of Lee ]e-ma has something to do with MBTI based on classification of character of C.G. Jung. This reports made from the information of 368 people who got the Sasang Constitution therapy and showed the good result in health in my hospital and they take part in self-report from of MBTI which are made as statistics and research in relationship between Sasang Constitution spitrit of Lee ]e-ma and classification of character of C.G. Jung This is the statistical result of the research. There is not exactly statistical result which support Sasang Constitution spirit of Lee Je-ma relate to the classification of character of C.G. Jung. The identification of statement of Sasang Constitution spirit with partispart is average 41 which is low while the identification of classification of character with partispart is average 76 which is high. In this reseult, It is hard to get general agreement that the statement of Sasang Constitution of spirit relate to the classification of character because of the difference of identification. so more studies are needed in this part.

This study demonstrates the effects of Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang, Sasang constitutional herb prescription reported its clinical effect on the stroke of the So-yang In(少陽人), on the cerebral blood flow changes induced by nitro L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) treatment and ischemic brain damage induced by the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in the rats. The changes of the arterial blood pressure, cerebral blood flow, and the diameter of the pial artery were measured in rats treated with L-NAME. And the changes of the infarct size, volume, and plasma tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured in the rats that the middle cerebral artery has been occluded by the intraluminal suture thread method. Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang was administered by the i.v. injection on the L-NAME treated rats, by the i.o. administration on the MCAO rats. The results is 1. The changes of the arterial blood pressure was not different statistically between in the L-NAME treated control group and in the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group. 2. Increase in the cerebral blood flow induced by L-NAME treatment was attenuated in the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group significantly (P<0.05) as compared with the L-NAME treated control group. 3. Decrease in the diameter of the pial artery induced by L-NAME treatment was attenuated about 18% in the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group as compared with the L-NAME treated control group. 4. Ischemic damaged infarct areas were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the interaural 12mm, 10mm, and 6mm brain sections of the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group as compared the MCA occluded control group. 5. Total ischemic infarct volume was decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group as compared the MCA occluded control group. 6. Plasma TNF-α levels were decreased significantly (P<0.01) in the Yanggyuksanhwa-Tang administered group as compared the MCA occluded control group.

Sasang Constitutional Medicine is based on the diversity of Human being and medically developed the response variation to diseases and medicines. The diversity is categorized as four from physiology, pathology, symptoms, to therapy. So that is related the difference of individual characteristics in Western Science. Single nucleotide polymorphism is the basic tool to research genetic polymorphisms. We researched the polymorphism site of MTHFR gene on 1p36.3, which is relatively reported the occlusive vascular disease. In the clinical research of brain infarction, the occurrence was different according to constitution. The 677C/T Polymorphism site of MTHFR was not significantly different in constitution group. But this research was the first trial about the single nucleotide polymorphism according to constitution. The more researchs of many genes are necessary to find the characteristics of constitution.

If the proximal portion of the fourth segment of the vertebral onery is occluded before the posterior inferior cerebellar artery branch, ischemia usually affects the lateral medulla oblongata or the ipsilateral side of the cerebellum. The lateral medullary syndrome(wallenberg syndrome) resulting from occlusion in this area is common. 62 years old male who has swallowing difficulty, dizziness and diagnosed as the lateral medullary syndrome(wallenberg syndrome) is admitted in Wonkwang university oriental medical hospital Kwangju. We have diagnosed him as Taeumin and treated by east integrated therapy. We classified this as Taenmin-liyoiljung(太陰人 裏熱症) and prescribed chungsimyoinjatang(淸心蓮子湯) to the principle of cheongganjoyoil(淸肝燥熱). In the result, we had the improvement of the symptoms. This report described the process and contents about the way the patient was cured.

A 33-year-old woman diagnosed as livedo reticularis came to this hospital on October 14th, 1995. She complained of cold feet, ulceration on both ankles at the first OPD visit. We have diagnosed as 'Taeumin Ban-Chang-Byoung'. And we have applied acupunctures(Auricular Acupuncture + Acupuncture) and herb durgs. Auricular acu-points are Heart, Lungs, Shenmen, Adrenal. Herb drugs are Yuldahansotang or Chengpesagantang. After 3 treatments, she felt her feet warm. After 32 treatments, ulceration has disappeared. Even though we can't say that Ban-Chang-Byoung is livedo reticularis. But we can assume that two are related on the basis of the context of 'Dongyisoosebowon'.

Purpose: In general, Acute Pyelonephritis is effectively treated with the use of antibiotics. However, some antibiotics are reported to cause side effects, and the abuse of antibiotics results in the increase of the disease's tolerance to antibiotics. Recently, I have effectively treated five cases of Acute Pyelonephritis by using only Constitution - Acupuncture and Herb, and therefore I would like to report about these cases. Methods: I diagnosed Acute Pyelonephritis of these five patients by confirming symptoms and employing a urine analysis with reagent strip(Multi stix®). I used Kuon's method of constitutional diagnosis for the purpose of the diagnosis of the constitutional 8 morbidities. I relied on Sungjeong(性情) and Chehyungkisang(體刑氣像) in diagnosing Sasang Constitutions(四象人). I performed acupuncture on the left and right sides, depending on 8 constitutions, by employing Chang - temperament Inflammation Formula(臟系炎症方) that is used for the treatment of all kinds of chang-temperament inflammation diseases, as well as Bactericidal Formula(殺菌方) that is used for the treatment of all kinds of bacterially caused diseases. I prescribed by consulting the appearance of disease and general symptoms of each case with Dongyi Soose Bowon(東醫壽世保元)'s prescription symptoms. Result: Two of them showing severe symptoms were hospitalized, while three others took OPD treatment. The patient who was PANCREOTONIA and Soyangin improved through hospitalization for three days, another patient who was PULMOTONIA and Taeyangin with severe symptoms, improved through hospitalization for seven days, and completely recovered through OPD treatment later. The three others took only OPD treatment, and improved within 5-7 days. Conclusion: I confirmed that each of 8-constituions and Sasang Constitutions were all treated effectively without antibiotics.
