    Abstract PDF
By the investigation of "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and the comparison study between the thought of "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and that of Lee Je-ma, I've got the following conclusion. 1. All man have two mind. That is explained that "In-Sim" and "Do-Sim" in the "Sim-Kyong-Bu-Ju", "Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" and "So-In-Ji-Sim" in the Lee Je-ma. 2. says that "In-Sim" and "Do-Sim" are the important point of the distinguishment of the "Sung-In" from "Jung-In". The "Sung-In" is the man who distinguishes "In-Sim" from "Do-Sim" well, and he always is cautious for "In-Sim"s" falling in desire by the "Do-Sim". In the case of LeeJe-ma,"Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" is easy to know and "So-In-Ji-Sim" is hard to know. The man of "Kun-Ja-Ji-Sim" being large part is "Kun-Ja" and the man of "So-In-Ji-Sim" being large part is "So-In". 3. To reach the state of the "Kun-Ja", the "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" and Lee Je-ma present the variant training methods, "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku" which they have in common. The "Sin-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" presents the "Kyung" firstly for "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku", Lee Je-ma presents the "Yo-In-Sang-Jep-Ji-Sung" and "Ja-Ki-Tok-Tuk-Ji-Sung" for "Jel-Bu-Jel", "Jung-Bu-Jung", "Ji-In", "Ji-Chen". 4. The "Sim-Kyoung-Bu-Ju" says that establish the "Sung-Ui" by the "Kei-Shin-Kong-Ku", and to "Jung-Sim" by the "Sung-Ui", Lee Je-ma says "Chi-Sim-Jung-Ki" by "Ji-In".

Dong-Mu Lee Je-Ma and The Rising of Choi Moon-Hwan

    Park Seong-sik | 1997, 9(2) | pp.39~55 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Purpose : Dong-Mu(東武) Lee Je-Ma(李濟馬) was designated as a member of fifty persons 'The Wise Ancestors of Korean Culture and Art' in 1984 and the december of 1996 was appointed as 'The Month of Lee Je-Ma'. Though his achivements was valued like this, some historian criticized that he suppressed the righteous army. So this study was for clarifing the background, the motive, and the course of 'The Rising of Choi Moon-Hwan' occurred in Hamhung on february in 1896, and for the correct appraisement about this event. And also through this, author tried to make clear the origin of Lee Je-Ma's thought. Method : After studing the background of the end of Chosun dynasty and the righteous army in 1895(乙未義兵). Author made a comparative study through the historical materials of the goverment side, the Choi Moon-Hwan side, and the Lee Je-Ma side about 'The Rising of Choi Moon-Hwan' occurred in Hamhung on februrary in 1896. Results & Conclusion : The event occurred in Hamhung on february in 1896 was a part of rebellion of the righteous army in 1895 which had risen against The startling Occurrence of 1895'(乙未義兵) and 'The Royal Commands To Cut Off People's Hair'(斷髮令). Lee Je-Ma suppressed the Rising and put Choi Moon-Hwan in the prison, and which was criticized that he suppressed the righteous army later day. That time was a conflict period between conservatism and civilization, and the Lee Je-Ma's act was the best way to protect the security of residents from the attack which maybe occurred by Japanese army in Wonsan. Judging from this events, author could find Lee Je-Ma's thought was quite different from righteous army's neo-confucianism and conservatism. In the aspect of the history of 'Korean National Movement', further study about Choi Moon-Hwan, the chief of righteous army will be need.

A Study on the Diseases and Pharmacy of the Soumin's Sinsooyul-Pyoyul-Byung theory

    Joo, Jong Cheon , kim kyung yo | 1997, 9(2) | pp.67~94 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract PDF
The main purpose of this study is to arrange the diseases, principal medicinal substances and the prescriptions for the Soumin's Sinsooyul-Pyoyul-Byung(少陽人 腎受熱表熱病) by historical examination in the viewpoint of the Constitutional Medicine(四象醫學). In this study, first I collected the original texts of the diseases and priscriptions in Dongyi-Soose-Bowon(東醫壽世保元), and described the development process of the Soumin(少陽人)'s diseases and priscriptions by comparing with the contents in Dongyi-Soose-Bowon(東醫壽世保元). Next, I collected the efficacy of the medicinal substances and priscriptions by the examination of successive literatures referred it, and tried to explain the efficacy of each medicinal substances in the viewpoint of the Constitutional Medicine(四象醫學) by the analysis of successive literatures. As a result, the conclusions could be summarized as follows. 1. The Differentiation of Syndromes(辦證) in the Existing Medicine(旣存醫學) was formed according to the Eight Principal Syndromes(八綱), the Five Elements(五行), the Merdian system(經絡), therefore there were many confusions with the changes of the times. The differentiation of Syndromes(辦證) in the Constitutional Medicine(四象醫學) was formed according to the pathological change of Ascending and Descending Yin Yang(陰陽升降) in the Four Internal Organs(四臟), therefore, there was the consistency in the recognition of diseases. 2. The classification of the Soumin's Pyoyul-Byung(少陽人 表熱病) was divided into Yukuang Disease(鬱狂證) and Mangyang Disease(亡陽證) according to sweating or not. The conception of these diseases was mostly achived in Shanhanlun(優寒論). The treatment of Shanhanlun(優寒論) was alike to that of Dongyi-Soose-Bowon(東醫壽世保元) in a part. 3. Je ma, Lee thinked that the cause of the Soumin's Pyoyul-Byung(少陽人 表熱病) is the breakdown of the balanced equilibrium in ascending and descending Yin Yang(陰陽升降) for a Large Sin and a Small Bi(腎大脾小), and it is treated by warming and ascending Yang(溫補升陽). 4. The medicinal substances composing prescriptions for the Soumin's Pyoyul-Byung(少陰人 表熱病) is characterized with the efficacy of Ascending Yang and supplying Qi(升陽益氣) and regulating the digestive organs with the efficacy of warming it. 5. The medicinal substances composing the precriptions for the Soumin's Pyoyul-Byung(少陰人 表熱病) is divided into four parts with the state of Yang Qi(陽氣) in the disease it used. 6. The purpose of prescriptions for the Soumin's Pyoyul-Byung(少陰人 表熱病) is to strengthen the Soumin(少陰人)'s Yangnan Qi(陽暖之氣). Je ma, Lee kept the principle not to mix with another constitution's medicinal substances in the creation of the priscription.

Study on the Contrasting Aspects Between Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Traditional Oriental Medicine

    Lee Hang Jae , Choi Seung Hoon | 1997, 9(2) | pp.95~145 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
This study was performed to reveal some contrasting aspects between Sasang Constitutional Medicine(四象醫學) and Traditional Oriental Medicine(傳統 韓醫學). This aims ultimately for the unified standardization of Korea-Oriental Medicine. Suggesting the clear contrasting aspects of thse two medical system, this study might give several basic informations for ultimate achievement. As a result, some contrasting aspects were revealed as follows. 1. The interpretation of the man's status is contrasted. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine, man is interpreted as the member of the Society(天下) while in Traditional Oriental Medicine as the part of the Nature(天地). 2. The man's modeling is contrasted. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine, man is in the process of becoming as differentiating itself by the inner emotional producing. While in Traditional Oriental Medicine, man is generalized as one model according to the Nature, one great universe(天地). 3. The pathogenesis is contrasted. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine, emotional inclination is the main factor provoking the primary pathogenesis. While in Traditional Oriental Medicine the external isolated pathogenic factors such as Cold, Heat, Warm etc. are significant for the pathogenesis. 4. The evaluation of the disease is contrasted. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine all the diseases are evaluated according to the inherent condition of patient himself. But in Traditional Oriental Medicine the evaluation of disease isolated from the inheret condition of patient himself is generalized in its own system. 5. The prime method of healing, controlling, and maintaining health of the patient is contrasted. For these, the patient's spontaneous effort for adjusting his emotional inclination is important in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. While in Traditional Oriental Medicine, the external adjustment dependent on the herbal medication is the main method for healing, controlling, and maintaining health of the patient.

Genetic Analysis of Sasang constitution by Amp-FLP Method

    Dong Wuk Cho , Sun Kyung Ahn , Do Kyun Ki and 6 other persons | 1997, 9(2) | pp.163~173 | number of Cited : 2
    Abstract PDF
Amp-FLP is a one of the most frequently used human genetic analysis methos which adopts STR and VNTR typings. In this study, 100 genomic DNA samples of Taeum, Soyang, and Soum constitution group were analysed by Amp-FLP method. The allele distribution of three STR(THO1, vWA and CSF1PO) and on VNTR locus(MCT118) of each different constitution group were investigated and the allele distribution was statistically evaluated. It was found out that thte allele distribution of MCT118 and THO1 loci was not significantly different among different constitutions. However, the allele distribution of vWA showed p-value of 0.02056(Soyang group) and 2.41X10^-10(Soun group) which is much lower than significant level of p-value 0.05. Also, p-value of CSF1PO in Soum group was found out to be 4.65X10^-17. Therefore, it is expected that vWA and CSF1PO loci can be used as an indicator for gnenetic difference of different constitution if the same result is obtained with sufficient number of samples.

Study on the Toxicity of Jihwangbakhotang in Rats

    Na, Dal-Rye , kim kyung yo , Lee Jong Duck | 1997, 9(2) | pp.203~225 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Jihwangbakhotang(地黃白虎楊) is made by Li Je Ma, the creator of the Four Constitutional Medicine. Single and 13 weeks oral repeated dose toxicity studies were conducted in Sprague Dawley rats of both sexes to elucidate the potential acute and subchronic toxicity of JBT extract and reversibility of any effects. In the single dose study, JBT extract was administered orally to rats with the dose of 2 g/kg and 8 g/kg. In the long term administration of 13 weeks, the JBT extract of 125 mg/kg/day, 500 mg/kg/day, 2000 mg/kg/day was administered to rats. The change of blood weight, urine volume, electrolyte in urine, hematological change, the change of blood chemistry, autopsy finding, and histological observation were researched, the results were as follows; 1. The lethal dose of JBT extract seems to be over 10 g/kg, the single administration of JBT extract 8 g/kg showed no toxical signs except little increase of urine volume. 2. The change of body weight had the trend of decrease in the group of, but has no significance, and also the consumption of food and water had no changes. 3. The hematological changes induced by the 13 weeks administration of JBT extract showed the significance in the item of Hb, MCH, MCV, WBC in the group of 125 mg/kg/day. 4. In the test of blood chemistry, total cholesterol showed little decrease and A/G ratio showed little increase, but the change was not clear, and the standard error was large. So the result was obtained insignificantly and the toxicity of JBT extract was not observed. 5. In the male group after recovery period, the level of cholesterol and triglyceride decreased slightly, but the result was not significant. 6. In the urine test, the little change of electrolyte was appeared, but it seemed not to be the result induced by the toxicity of JBT extract. 7. In each group of male and female rats, the weight change of organ and the serum histological changes was observed, but the result did not showed the dose dependent toxicity. So the toxicity of JBT extract was not regarded. In the conclusion, the toxicity of JBT extract was not observed in the single dose treatment and long term repetitive administration of JBT extract.

A study on the ulcerous inhibitory effects of Taeumchowetang

    Park Dong Un , Kim Dal Rae | 1997, 9(2) | pp.227~243 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
The experimental study used in this paper was done to examine the clinical effects of Taeumchowetang for the gastric ulcer and the function of gastrointestinal tract using rats and mice which were administered orally the water extraction from Taeumchowetang. Then, the counter-action of the water extraction on the isolated ileum and gastric fundus, the inhibitory effects of pylorus-ligated ulcer and indomethacin-induced ulcer, the associations with gastric juice secretion, total acidity, pepsin output, the transportability in the small and large intestine, were studied with administering acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. In addition, it was investigated whether the central nervous system related to pain control and sleeping time was influenced by Taeumchowetang. The following results have been obtained; 1. As resulting from injection of acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride into the isolated ileum of rats and mice, Taeumchowetang led to have an inhibitory effect on the muscle contraction of the ileum. Then, acetylcholine chloride was measured as lower effect than barium chloride 2. For the inhibitory effect on contraction for the gastric fundus strip in rats by either acetylcholine chloride or barium chloride, the one showed low inhibitory effect, on the other hand the other showed density-dependent effect. 3. The water extraction was given on the pylorus ligated ulcer with using two different administration groups of 1,300mg/kg and 2,600mg/kg, each result was measured as 22.9% and 36.5% for an ulcerous inhibitory effect (p<0.05). 4. According to the two administration groups, the preventive effect was tabulated 18.1% and 29.3% for indomethacin-induced ulcer (p<0.05, P<0.01). 5. For associations with gastric juice secretion, total acidity, pepsin output in the administration group 2,600mg/kg, Taeumchowetang was recognized as having an inhibitory effects related to suppressive actions involving gastric juice secretion(p<0.05), and free acidity(p<0.01), but there was no significant association with total acidity and pepsin output. 6. To know the transportability in the intestine, BaSO4 solution was used. The transportability of the small intestine in the administration group 2,600mg/kg was 22.2% which was statistically significant compared with the large intestine's transportability(P<0.01). 7. In the administration group 1,300mg/kg and 2,600mg/kg, analgesic effect with against acetic acid was measured as being 16.8% and 24.4% which was shown as statistically siginificant(p<0.01). 8. No statistically significant association between Taeumchowetang and sleeping time was found in both 1,300mg/kg and 2,600mg/kg by administering phenobarbital-Na. According to the results of this study, Taeumchowetang has agreed with the effects of literature review. Further more in this study, Taeumchowetang also has preventive effects on pylorus-ligated ulcer. Hence, Teaumchowetang can be significant effect such as both anti ulcer agent and increasing gastric activity for the patients who suffer from gastric ulcer.

The consitution which had discriminated by survey, which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings, which had discriminated by the result of the impatient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription. The Prostaglandin E2 in blood for 47 persons (37 patients & 10 examinees) was measured. The following results were obtained. 1.In the constitution which had discriminated by survey, in the value of Prostaglandin E2 in bood of ammong four constitutiens didn,t showed significant differance. 2.In the constitution which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings, in the value of Prostaglandin E2 in bood of ammong four constitutiens didn,t showed significant differance. 3.In the constitution which had discriminated by the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription, the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of among four constitutions didn,nt showed signicant differance. 4.In the constitution which had discriminated by colligated three methods(survey, morphological diagrammings, the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription), the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of ammong four constituion didn,t showed significant differnce. 5.In the constitution which had discriminated by survey, a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the TAE-EUM-IN(太陰人) and the others of female showed significant differance. 6.In the constitution which had discriminated by study on the morphological diagrammings,a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the SO-EUM-IN(少陰人) and the others of male showed significant differance. 7.In the constitution whichhad discriminated by the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription,a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others was conducted. Only the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood between in the TAE-EUM-IN(太陰人) and the others of male showed significant differance. 8.In the constitution which had discriminated was the colligated three methods(survey, morphological diagrammings, the result of patient of hospital on a dosage of constitutial prescription),a test of significance between the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of each constitution and the value of Prostaglandin E2 in blood of the others didn,t showed significant differnce. In this connected study is inadequete at present. But if the study is done persistently, the analysis of various ingredient in the body enables objectification in differentiation of four types of physical constitution as the supplemental method.

Study for Relationship between the Type of Differentiation of Symptoms and Signs of Oriental Gynecology and Sasang Constitution (In the Field of the Patiehts who chiefly complained Feeling of Cold)

    Lee In Seon , Kim Jong Won , Lee Sang hoon | 1997, 9(2) | pp.263~281 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract PDF
We studied the relationship between each type which was figured out by the question paper given to the patients who chiefly complained feeling of cold and Sasang constitution. The results are as follows. 1. Diagnoses in woman's disease with feeling of cold(冷病) are abdomnal mass(uterine myoma, ovarian cyst), dysmenorrhea, leukorrhea and infertility, orderly in number. They have commoness in the origin of disease which are stagnation of Qi(氣滯) and blood stasis(血瘀), cold(寒), damp(濕) and we can find the causes of feeling of cold are stagnation of blood(血瘀) and harmness of damp(水毒). 2. In the type of survey through the question paper, the largest number of the origin of that disease is cold, the next is blood stasis and dificiency of Qi(氣虛), dificiency of blood(血虛), stagnation of Qi, damp phlegm(濕痰) etc. 3. (1)The numbers by constitutional assortment of object are like this. Taeumin are 23 persons,Soumin 14 and Soyangin 6, so we can find the feeling of cold turn up evenly in all constitution but the number of Soyangin was relatively small. (2)The inclination of constitutional type is the highest in Soumin and they often have and feel strongly disorders of their body. (3)We could find the corelation of theoretical background of Sasang Medicine in constitutional type of survey. 4. (1)The numbers by constitutional assortment of the patients with feeling of cold and numbness(冷痺症) are like this. Taeumin are 16 persons, Soumin 7 and Soyangin 3, as are like the distribution of 3-(1). (2)The inclination of constitutional type is the highest Soumin, so they have multiple type of differentiation of symptoms and signs and their symptoms is old and severe, therefore they need long time for cure. In all, except the symptom with feeling of cold caused by dificiency of the blood and insufficiency of yang(氣虛와 陽虛) that we meet frequently on clinic is numerous, the number of that caused by stagnation of Qi and blood(氣滯와 血滯) alike dysautonomia is also large. And we can find the feeling of cold turn up evenly in all constitution but the number of Soyangin was relatively small. Within the case of Soumin, they have both dificiency of Qi and blood, have complex source, so their symptoms are old and severe and they need long time for cure. In Taeumin, they are of large number with dificiency of Qi and we think thst that are concerned with the symptom of exterior cold.

The Bibiographical Investigation of the Garlic(Daesan 大蒜) - Through the comparison of Daesan(大蒜) with Sosan(小蒜) -

    Kim, Jong-Dug , Koh Byung-Hee | 1997, 9(2) | pp.287~299 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
The Garlic having antibiosis is added to the most cuisine and used to treat dysentery and diarrhea for So-um-in(少陽人). The fact that the garlic, a Kind of Hun-chae, has warm and thermal characteristics couId be proved by a natural ecoIgical action of a fIy, Delia antiqua Meigen. OriginalIy San(蒜) designated Sosan(小蒜), a native species in Korea. But as Daesan(garlic)(大蒜) was imported, it meant both of Sosan(小蒜) and Daesan(大蒜). Now it means only Daesan(大蒜). This process of change of meaning was reviewed by focusing on the Dong-ui-bo-gam(東醫寶鑑). The San-20-mae(蒜二十枚) appearing in the Dangun mythology(檀君神話) should be interpreted not to 'garlic 20 piece(마늘 20개)' but to 'Dal-lae 20 roots(달래 20뿌리)'. It is possible to explain that the hibernant bear compared with the active tiger overcame the animality and the bestiality with perseverance in the dark cave so that it could be transformed to a human at the 21stday, the culmination number of Yang(陽). The garlic decame an abstaining food at sacrificial rituals because it arouses the sexual desire and excites person,s mind. High dose of raw garlic may cause harmful side effects in So-yang-in(少陽人) and Tae-um-in(太陰人) having a thermal characteristic.

Litcrary consideratin about potatoes and sweet potatoes

    Kim Jong Dug , Song Il Byung | 1997, 9(2) | pp.301~312 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Since new continental was discovered, potatoes and sweet potatoes originated from America have been known worldwide. Through literary consideration about potatoes and sweet potatoes, several conclusons were obtained as enumerated below. 1. Based on work done by taxonomist in Orient, both of sweet potatoes and potatoes which were classified to the families of Convovulaceae and Solansceae repectively were included in Seo-rue(薯類). In contrast, both plants' identities were differed systematically. 2. Because potatoes fulfilled with like-cold keep warm, potatoes help So-um-in(少陰人) achieve Yang-nan-ji-gi(陽煖之氣). Meanwhile, the characteristic of sweet potatoes typically in wild living style assists Tae-um-in(太陰人) to own Ho-san-ji-gi(呼散之氣). That sweet potatoes affect on bodies as much as Mar(山藥=마) does makes this pant be defined as good food. 3. The inside contents of Nam-bang-bon-cho-sang(南方本草狀) cited from sweet potatoes chapter in the book of Bon-cho-gang-mok(本草綱目) indicated that the word of sweet potatoes was not found, but called as a kind of Mar(山藥=마) which lived wildly in a mountain Unfortunately, due to that medical scientist cited contents of Nam-bang-bon-cho-sang(南方本草狀) without pursuing carefully, sweet potatoes have been misunderstood. 4. According to the book of Sasang Constitutional medicine, sweet potatoes are good for Tae-um-in(太陰人) who has constipation, and potatoes are good for So-um-in(少陰人) who suffers form stomach illnesses like ulcer and hotburn. Therefore two plants have been used for curing those illness. ln addition, the taking oriental medicine with those plants are recommenced for dietary treatment according to the Constitution.
