    Abstract PDF
The purpose of this investigation is to seek the concepts of the Nature and the Emotion in the Sasang Constitutional Medicine. The results summerized as following. 1. When feelings like joy, anger, sorrow and happiness are kept in heart this state is the Nature. When they are expressed this state is the Emotion. In this point Confucianism and the Sasang Constitutional Medicine are same each other. 2. The Nature and Emotion of Confucianism are the psychic concepts. But the Nature and Emotion of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine are the psychosomatic concepts. 3. QI(氣) of joy, anger, sorrow and happiness, each of them share with qi(氣) of the Nature and Emotion. Qi(氣) of the Nature and Emotion directly influence the formation of Sasang Constitution, physiological and pathological state. As mentioned above, though the Nature and Emotion of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine come from Confucianism they are used the more opened conception.

A Comparative Study on the Theory of Lee jaema and Chang jong-cheng

    Choi, yei-kwon , kim kyung yo | 1996, 8(2) | pp.41~68 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
This thesis is a try for examining the historical characteristics of Constiutional medicine. For this purpose, I have examined their theory, and made a comparison carefully. Through this study, I have obtained several results as following. Both Chang and Lee lived in the time of change, which was unstable and uncertain. Under the condition, they both rejected following the existing trends of learned circles, and developed new thoughts and clinical techniques. They rejected superstitious beliefs and fatalism, and conducted the pursuit of experimental knowledge and rationale idea. Clinical experience was the very base of their study. They both criticized the bad habits of abuse of tonifing medication and health seeking. Especially Lee regarded control of emotion and regulation of a way of life as the best way for preservation of one's health. Chang regarded pathogenic factors as the ultimate factor of diseases, and strived for eliminating pathogenic factors, but L brought to a conclusion that the final factor of diseases was what is called "heart" itself, and emotional changes were the most essential causes of disease. It can be said that the pathogenesis insisted by Chang can be called The insistence that pathologic factors are the very etiology of all the disease (邪氣致病論), or all the diseases result from pathologic factors. And his whole remedy can be summarized as following, A study on the method of eliminating pathogenic factors. But the purpose of Constitutional medicine is to correct imbalance intrinsic to one's internal organs. In this aspect, Constitutional medicine is a "regulatory medicine". Depending on the classification of six vital substances, Chang classified all disease into six categories. These were based on symptoms and sings represented. While classification of diseases made by Lee was likely to rely upon constitutional characteristics. Chang thought that the three remedies made up of perspiration, purgation, vomiting were the most efficient way of eliminating pathogenic factors. Lee, however, thought those weren't methods of eliminating pathogenic factors but the best ways restoring one's self-regulation power. Chang thought that all the febrile disease essentially has a tendency in properties to belong to "heat", but Lee pointed out that pathologic processes are variable in accordance with constitutional features. They both regarded pathogenesis of diabetes as fire. That is to say, fire is the most essential factor of diabetes. And there are many risk factors such as inappropriate foods, drugs, climate, etc., but Lee thought what is most important is heart. Putting all accounts together, medical characteristics of Chang are similar to those of T aiyinjen and Shaoyangjen, and have no relation to those of those of Shaoyinjen. Therefore we can conclude that Chang understood pathologic processes of disease of T aiyinjen and Shaoyangjen, whether he knew about constitutional features or not.

A Comparative Study on Soumin Bojungyikgitang and Bojungyikgitang in the View of Constitutional Medicine

    Kim Il-hwan , kim kyung yo | 1996, 8(2) | pp.69~94 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
The main purpose of this work is comparing the difference between Soumin Bojungyikgitang of constitutional medicine and Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang Bojungyikgitang, the prescription originated from the Pi-Wei theory(脾胃論) of Li Dongyuan who was a medical man in the Jin Yuan dynasty, had been used widely for many kinds of disease caused by the singking of the qi of middle energizer due to the weakness of the spleen and stomach. But in the singking of the qi of middle energizer due to the weakness of the spleen and stomach. But in the end of Choseon dynasty Li Je Ma, the creator of the constitutional medicine, modified the Bojungyikgitang and applied to Soumin's disease. In this paper, the difference between the two prescription were investigated from the viewpoint of chinese herb pharmacology and purpose of prescription. Additionally the problems which could be brought out by applying Bojungyikgitang to the Soyangin and the Taeumin were studied. And the conclusion could be summarized as follows: 1. The prescription of the Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang is based on the deficiency of vital energy due to internal damage and the Soumin Bojungyikgitang is useful to only a certain stage of progressing disease on the basis of Shanghanlun(傷寒論). 2. In the Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang, Cimicifugae Rhizoma and Bupleuri Radix were used for emphasizing the ascending action and have the antipyretic action and the effect of elavating of yangqi as they are bitter in taste and cold in nature. 3. In the Soumin Bojungyikgitang, Pogostemonis Herba and Perillae Folium have the ascending-descending action and strengthen the stomach with the effect of mild sweating by pungent taste and warm nature. 4. The effect of elavating of yangqi in the Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang offers the pathway where vital qi go up by eleminating the pathogenic fire with the action of Cimicifugae Rhizoma and Bupleuri Radix in the triple energizer and yangming muscular striae. On the other hand, the Soumin Bojungyikgitang depends on the effect of reinforcing qi and elavating yangqi by Astrgalli Radix entirely and supply vital qi by reinforcing yangqi with Ginseng Rsdix. 5. The exahausion of yin(亡陰證) in the Soyangin exterior syndrome and cold limbs(寒厥證) in Taeumin exterior syndrome are similar to the indication of Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang. As the causes of the disease are fundamentally different in the view of constitutional medicine, the diseases could be aggravated by applying Li's Bojungyikgitang. These results suggest that Li Dongyuan's Bojungyikgitang is proper to the exterior syndrome of Soumin and Soumin Bojungyikgitang seems to be appropriate to the Soumin's disease.

    Kim In Tae , Koh Byung-Hee , Song Il Byoung | 1996, 8(2) | pp.95~116 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract PDF
As considering a comparison study of the structure of mind and psychologic type of C.G Jung to Ji-In-Lon and Sa-Sang constituition of Lee Je Ma, I've got the following conclusion. 1. The study of the structure of mind of Jung and Ji-In-Lon of Lee Je ma have a important meaning to each theory of type of men. They developed their own peculiar theory of type men by the analysis of the mind of men. 2. Jung explained the organization of recognition by four phase theorical structure; consciousness, personal unconsciousness, collective unconsciousness, self. Lee Je Ma explained the organization of recognition by four phase theorical structure;Sa, Sim, Sin, Mul. And theory of type of men, Jung established four type; Tae-Yang-In, Tae-Um-In, So-Yang-In, So-Um-In, They all established the four phase structure, which have things in common. 3. Jung studied the consciousness and unconsciousness and Lee Je Ma studied the Sung-In, Eui, Ye, Ji, and Sim-Yock-Bi, Bak, Tam, Na. I think they have a close relationship. And I think there is relationship between consciousness, unconsciousness to Gun-Ja-Ji-Sim, So-In-Ji-Sim. 4. I think there is thought of relationship between Lee Je Ma's Dae-Dong, Gak-lip, Hang-gi-ji, Hang-gi-hang and Ho-sun, Oh-ak, Sa-sim, Tae-hang and relationship of internal organ's size to Jung's the first function, second function, third function, fourth function. 5. I think the relationship between the type of Jung;thinking type, feeling, type, sensation type, intuition type to the type of Lee Je Ma; Tae-Yang-In, Tae-Um-In, So-Yang-In, So-Yang-In, So-Um-In needs more study.

Genetic Analysis study of Sasang Constitution Classification by DNA-fingerprinting methods

    Cho Dong-wuk , Lee Chang Soo , Koh Byung-Hee and 1 other persons | 1996, 8(2) | pp.151~163 | number of Cited : 2
    Abstract PDF
VNTR and STR DNA typing are typical genetic analysis methods which are widely used in DNA-fingerprinting for forensic science and other genetic research purposes. In this study, genomic DNA of different constitutions(Taeun, Soyang and Soum) were analyzed by VNTR and STR DNA typing to provide scientific and objective references for Sasang Medicine. It was found out in this study that VNTR-MCT118 and YNZ22 loci showed too many different variation of allele distribution and numbers for each constitution. Therefore, it is thought that VNTR typing can not used for genetic classification study for Sasang Constitution which classifies human body into 4 groups. However, vWA locus, one of the STR loci investigated in this study, showed slight difference in allele distribution for each different constitution.

Study on Comarison of Homeopathy with Sa-sang constitutional Medicine in Basic Principles from the literature

    Sangwoo Ahn , Cho, Hwang-Sung | 1996, 8(2) | pp.165~190 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Homoeopathy was established in 1796 by German physician Samuel Hahnemann(1755~1843). This method is an alternative form of therapy involving treatment by natural remedies. The basic principles of homeopathic medicine, "Similia similibus curantur", "experimenta in hominesano", "doses minimae" and "unitas remedii", are founded upon the idea of illness as a disorder of the internal equilibrium at the physical, mental and psychic levels. The three distinguishing characteristics of homeopathy are that remedies are prescribed on the totality of a person's symptoms, that the remedy likely to cure a person is a dilution of that remedies are prepared using microdoses of substances which are diluted and then vigorously shaken. This paper describes the basic principled of homeopathy and compared with the Sa-sang constitutional Medicine from the literature. 1. Homeopathy is the holistic medicine that derived from the competition of vitalism and mechanism, and it is the one of natural medicine that absorbed the influence of asian scholarship and theoretical background of oriental medicine. 2. Homeopathic remedy typologies and Sa-sang constitutional Medicine are same in the mind-body correlativity and in-born typologies. 3. In homeopathy, constitutional types are distinguished the variable types with variety of symptoms by the remedy picture, but comparably in Sa-sang constitutional medicine, it is determined only by the constitutional symptoms.

    Abstract PDF
Sasang constitution classification is very important subject, so many medical men studied the Sasang constitution classification but there is no certain method to classify objectively. And the purpose of this study is to help classifying Sasang constitution through correlation with sound spectrogram. This study was done it under the suppose that Sasang costitution hag correlation with sound spectrogram. The following results were obtained about correlation between sound spectrogram and Sasang constitution by comparison and analysis the pitch and reading speed of Sasang constitutions; 1. There was a similar tendency in the composition reading speed between taeeumin, soeumin and soyangin. 2. Taeeumin's center was lower measured more than soeumin's and soyangin's in the pitch graph and graph by normal curve fit and there was a similar tendency between soeumin and soyangin. 3. There was a similar tendency in the pitch graph's width between all constitutions. 4. There was a significant difference between taeeumin and soeum in the mean of three constitution's pitch, this means that taeeumin uses lower voice more than soeumin. According to the results, it is considered that there is a correlation between pitch of sound spectrogram and Sasang constitution. And method of Sasang constitution classification through sound spectrogram analysis can be one method as assistant for the objectification of Sasang constitution classification.

Lee-Jae ma referred Hae-Yeok disease as a TAE-YANG person's peculiar disease in Dnoguisusaebowon. I looked around referred portion of Hae-Yeok disease in Internal Classic and the annotation of that part. As a result, newly emphasized stat of Hae-Yeok disease-that is "weak but not weak, strong but not strong" "the upper part of body is healthy, but the lower part is hae-yeok"-is not existed in Internal Classic itself. A person regarded as TAE-YANG person with Hae-Yeok disease is changed for the better by taking Ogapijangcheoktang. And as mentioned in Donguisusaebowon, rage, sorrow cause to appear and grow worse this dease.

The Study on Validity of "Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification"

    Ro Sung Ho , Eui Ju Lee , Hong, Seok-Cheol and 2 other persons | 1996, 8(2) | pp.239~255 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
The study was conducted for the purpose of finding out an objective classification method for the Sasang Constitutional medicine, which divides people into 4 groups of constitution and presents comprehensively physiology, pathology, diagnosis, theraphy and recuperation fit to each constitution. Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution collected during 9 months from March 1995 to November 1995. For the purposes of this study, the collected data were analyzed by crosstabs, variation analysis, discrimination analysis. The analyzing program was SPSS PC+V4.0. The results were as follows : 1. QSCC consists of the authorized questions studied by te oriental medicine specialists based on "four groups" given the diagnosis of Sasang Constitution Classification and variation analysis by scores of body constitution. 2. When human's body constitution is classified on the basis of QSCC scores of body constitutions and classified by the absolute size, group cases correctly classified was So-Yang-In 17.3%, Tae-Em-In 26.4%, So-Em-In 74.2%, Tae-Yang-In 100%. However, the number of examples are rare. Average percent of "group" cases correctly classified was 39.3%. 3. When human's body constitution is classified on the basis of QSCC scores of body constitutions and clasified by the relative size, group cases correctly classified was So-Yang-In 40.5%, Tae-Em-In 29.1%, So-Em-In 49.2%, Tae-Yang-In 100%. However, the number of examples are rare. Average percent of "group" cases correctly classified was 39.6%. 4. If the diagnosis of body constitution applies to the people after discrimination formula applies to them before the scores of body constitution is correctly analyzed, group cases correctly classified was So-Yang-in 50.5%, Tae-Em-In 36.9%, So-Em-In 55.9%, Tae-Yang-In 100%. However, the number of examples are rare. Average percent of "group" cases correctly classified was 44.03%. 5. As discrimination formula is applied and analyzed based on the questions of higher percent of reaction freqency, So-Yang-in 61.4%, Tae-Em-In 48.8%, So-Em-In 62.0%. Average percent of group cases correctly classified was 54.91% and it was percent increased compared to chance probability. 6. Therefore, it comes to the conclusion if we utilize QSCC, we are able to predict Sasang Constitution.
