    Welfare Thoughts of Johann Hinrich Wichern from a Social-Ethical Perspective

    Won-Don Kang | 2007, 14() | pp.7~42 | number of Cited : 5
    Abstract PDF
    In this article I have analyzed and evaluated from a social-ethical perspective the welfare thought of Johann Hinrich Wichern (1808-1881), who has exercised a huge influence on the German Inner Mission in shaping its theological and practical foundation. Through such activities he could save his nation and people from the social problems of the 19th century, which came from the heart of the so-called Manchester capitalism.In the first and the second chapter I have looked into how he has accepted traditional heritages of the Reformation and the pietism, which helped him to articulate his specific diaconate theology and to contribute to organizing many diaconate associations for neighbor’s love. In the third chapter I have analyzed the purpose and tasks of the German Inner Mission, which were elaborated thoroughly in the program paper of Wichern in 1849. I have paid attention to the following: In struggle against the social problems and aggressive communism he has endeavored to keep the family as God’s basic order from destruction and deterioration. He has thought that church and state should play their own role in protecting the poor and the marginalized. He has acknowledged the necessity of the ambulant help, but put more emphasis on self-reliance and self-help of those who were at the edge of the society.For me it is interesting that Wichern has made efforts to articulate social policies from the Christian responsibility in the 1870’s, when Germany marched the way to the social state. In this respect, he has suggested a good model of social diaconate.In the last step I would say that Wichern’s model of associate diaconate, church and social diaconate are very suggestive for Korean churches, which would contribute in their own ways to shaping the welfare state. I appreciate the thought of Wichern that the underprivileged should stand on their own feet and show their ability for self-reliance and self-help.

    박도현 | 2007, 14() | pp.69~94 | number of Cited : 3
    Abstract PDF
    This paper try to give a new perspective of how to see the war and peace. Rienhold Niebuhr who represents a Christian ethics insist a just war. Christian statement about just war was a main stream after Augustinus. In this article I want to introduce John Yorder's ethics of peace whom is a christian ethician and he is opposed to Just war. Jorder is a anabaptist and he was faithful to the Bible, and he thought that action is important. What influenced him was the vision of anabaptism, the theology of Karl Barth, and Biblical realism. Yorder considers Jesus' Word and his life as the model of which Christians should follow. As a result, his ethics is focused on Jesus.At the same time, he tried to focus on what christians church should do. Especially I will try to develop the ethics of peace according to Christology. Yorder thought the ethics of cross as the core of Christianism, and he thought that christians should follow Jesus. Yorder insisted that Christianism was decayed when it became as the National religion, and he pointed it as a Constantinianism. Yorder thought that this kind of perversion lead to the opinion of agreeing just war. Yorder said that what Jesus wanted was peace, and a church should be a group which makes come true of Pacifism. The opinion of this statement has its merits and demerits, but it makes us to think what kind of life should the christian live.

    A Study on the Plagiarism of Preaching of the Korean Church

    Keumyong Kim | 2007, 14() | pp.125~152 | number of Cited : 6
    Abstract PDF
    Recently Korean society has been faced with the problem of several scholars' plagiarism. This problem is not limited to certain scholars. Plagiarism, that is, the practice of using someone else's idea or work and pretending that he thought of it, has extensively appeared in the world of preachers as well. However it has not been discussed sufficiently in the world of the Korean preachers although there were some simple mentions. Therefore three important subjects that should be discussed in connection with the plagiarism of preaching are discussed throughout this study. The first is to investigate the reality of preaching-plagiarism of the Korean church. The second is that its vulnerable points are discussed. The third is to suggest pertinent ideas that can help preachers overcome the plagiarism of preaching.

    Grace as Gift of God in mediation of transcendence and immanence

    Wonbin Park | 2007, 14() | pp.183~212 | number of Cited : 3
    Abstract PDF
    This article explores the concept of grace as gift of God phenomenologically as well as ethically. If we understand Jesus Christ as the mediator of transcendence and immanence, the incarnation of Christ is the realization of the grace of God. In this reason, the concept has been always analyzed based on christological approach. In this article, I want to focus on God as the giver of grace. How can we understand God as the giver of grace? If we focus on the concept of God, the gap between transcendence and immanence will not be incompatible? Recent scholarship have contributed to this complicated problem by the help of phenomenology and ethics. This article consists of the followings. First, I will explore grace as gift of God in relation to the concept of 'gift' in the assumption that gift is the most similar act to the concept of grace. I will examine how gift can achieve its real meaning and how God himself is the best 'Gift and Grace' to us. Second, I will show that his love is unmeasurable and beyond our limit by using Jean-Luc Marion's concept of icon. Marion asserts that iconic thought provokes God, whereas idolous thought confines the concept of God. He argues that ontological thought is the main cause of concept of God falling into idolized thought. Third, I will argue that the response to the grace of God as gift can be realized in a form of ethic of the other, because this ethic can also be found in the doctrine of Kenosis.In conclusion, this study will contribute to build up a more clear concept of grace based on God as a gift and how we can live in this world as a recipient his grace individually as well as communally.

    A Legal Analysis on the Biblical Concept of "Crime and Punishment

    Lee In-Young | 2007, 14() | pp.213~250 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
    In this paper, I researched christian viewpoint on "Crime and Punishment" and compared it with legal viewpoint in criminal jurisprudence, for the purpose of sublating the dichotomy of the holy God's law and secular earthly law.According to this research, christian viewpoint on "Crime" has peculiarities as followings.First, mental or inner world's malice, greed, and licentiousness are all considered as sin according to the Bible. In criminal law, however, crime is only punishable when it is expressed.Second, the Bible places a great deal of weight on idolatry. To worship idols is the betrayal of God as well as the violation of the first and the second Commandment. The criminal codes do not contain such type of rule. Third, the Bible says the original sin is inherited from Adam to mankinds. The criminal laws, based on one's own responsibility principle, do not punish one due to others crime. Forth, unlike the criminal law, the Bible provides moral rule as if the fifth commandment.A common point of sins on bible and crimes on law is the violation of rules. The former means the violation of God's rules, and the latter, the violation of human rules. The differences between the two is depended on whether the law regulate inner side or not. So, the relationship between the two is not totally different one, but reciprocal complement.

    Beyond Dialogue to Convivienz

    이지성 | 2007, 14() | pp.251~276 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract PDF
    This study presented convivienz that combines even up the dimension of life, with paying attention to a matter that a dialogue between religions stops at declaration. The purpose of this study is to show one alternative plan in which convivienz can be applied very usefully at a point that a dialogue is regarded as impossible. The relationship between Christianity and other religions is generally classified into exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism. By the way, these arguments are just the controversy within Christian religion. Also, a dialogue between other religions, which these people emphasize, simply stops in declaring a virtual norm as a whole. A dialogue between Christianity and other religions needs to be practically performed at a place of life. Also, this meeting needs to be spread in the total ground such as academic, theological, spiritual, and life dialogue. As such overall ground, this study introduces Conviviez that is presented by T. Sundermeier. Convivienz is explained together with two concepts called ‘Convivialidad’ and ‘conviviencia.’ Convivienz is a word that means small community of the vulgar herd in South America based on the emotion of Convivialidad. This place is space that is formed with meeting, dialogue, learning, and festival. By the way, conviviecia, and convivienz as experience of communal life, which is placed on its origin, can persuasively combine theory and practice aiming at existence with other religions. Namely, that is because convivienz is completed through learning, assistance, and feast as well as dialogue. T. Sundermeier sees that Convivienz is possibly realized by small local churches in modern times.This study puts forward Stanley Johns as one model that realized the spirit of convivienz at the missionary field. He showed one model in missionary work through dialogue and community in India.

    Derrida's Deconstruction As A Life-Affirming Strategy: A Theological Reflection

    Seunggap Lee | 2007, 14() | pp.301~335 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
    이 글은 흔히 “해체”라는 말로 묘사되는 프랑스 철학자 데리다(Jacques Derrida)의 비평적 실천에 대한 한 신학적 숙고이다. 이 글에서 필자는 데리다의 “해체”가 세계 안에서의 인간 경험의 의미와 가치를 무시하고 있다는, 즉 “허무주의적”이라는 비판들에 주목하였다. 비평가들의 눈에, 데리다는 경험 세계를 형이상학의 언어 게임 안으로 사라지게 하는 것처럼 보인다. 말하자면, 해체주의 철학은 형이상학과 언어학 모두에서 지나치게 철학적인 것으로 보이며, 동시에 역사적, 즉 더욱 물리적 차원으로서의 이 세상적 삶을 초월하고 부인하는 것처럼 보인다. 이런 맥락에서 “해체”는 신학과 탈구조주의 사이에 다리를 놓고자 하는 모든 건설적 신학적 시도들에 장애가 되고 있는 것이 사실이다. 이 글에서 필자는 데리다의 해체주의 철학이 일종의 허무주의라고 말하는 것이 타당하지 않으며, 오히려 데리다의 “해체”에는 이 세상적인 삶의 긍정의 목소리가 들려진다는 것을 보여주고자 시도했다. 데리다의 해체적 실천은 형이상학적 이원론, 존재론적 본질주의, 그리고 계급체제 또는 권위주의 등에 의해 지탱되는 모든 체제들을 해체시킴으로써 오히려 삶의 긍정을 선포한다. 따라서 데리다의 “해체”는 세계 안에서의 인간 삶들의 존엄성과 가치의 향상을 향해 방향지워진 모든 신학적 시도들을 고무시킨다고 볼 수 있다. 이 글의 두 번째 단락, 즉 데리다의 “해체”에 대한 신학적 적용에서, 필자는 데리다의 “해체”가 시간과 영원, 내재와 초월 사이의 이원론적 경향을 극복하도록 도우면서 세계의 역사적 차원에 많이 주목하기 위한 길을 열고, 세계 안에서의 인간 삶의 관계적 측면을 강조한다는 점에 주목하였으며, 결론적으로 거기서 정치적, 경제적 의미에서의 불의, 사회적 소외와 배제와 같은 왜곡된 역사적 상황들을 변혁시키는 신학적 윤리의 함의들이 발견된다고 주장했다.
