    The Progression and Its Meaning of School Entrance Ceremony of Crown Prince Hyomyung in 1817

    NA‑YEON PARK | 2022, 58() | pp.5~33 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
    This thesis is aimed to analyze the meaning of Crown Prince Iphakryeo procedure and rite for crown prince Hyomyeong held in 1817 (Sunjo 17). Unlike other rites of passage, Iphakryeo was performed not in the palace but in Seonggyungwan, and with his walk from the palace to Seonggyungwan, they could show the status of a crown prince externally. Crown prince Hyomyeong, too, showed how he had grown academically to all of his subjects through Iphakryeo and revealed his presence through the walk. Iphakryeo for crown prince Hyomyeong is characterized with the fact that it was conducted by observing the rules of Crown Prince Iphakryeo arranged in late Chosun and also by complementing insufficient parts in Crown Prince Iphakryeo established in 『Gukjooryeoui (國朝五禮儀)』. This is the point to follow the process of maintaining Crown Prince Iphakryeo in late Chosun just as it was and hand down the tradition. For crown prince Hyomyeong’s Iphakryeo, Sunjo (純祖) ordered them to take as a model the Iphakryeo for crown prince Jeongjo (正祖) who was the eldest son of the crown prince at the time of 1761 (Yeongjo 37) that it was held. Appointing Nam Gong-cheol as Baksa to teach crown prince Hyomyeong, he asked him to keep the tie as his father, Nam Yu-yong, did as taking Baksa’s position in Jeongjo’s Iphakryeo to teach him. In addition, making his close subjects engaged in the project to arrange and compile 『Sohak (小學)』 with Yeongjo and Jeongjo join in education for crown prince Hyomyeong, Sunjo allowed the practice and importance of 『Sohak』 to be handed down from Jeongjo to crown prince Hyomyeong. Accordingly, with the example of Iphakryeo for crown prince Hyomyeong, we can see that Jewanghak in the 18th century was led to education for crown prince Hyomyeong in the 19th century.

    The Translation of Poems and Translator’s Grammatical Competence

    Jeong-Woo Kim | 2022, 58() | pp.35~65 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
    If the systematic structure inherent in a language is defined as grammar of the language, the grammatical aspects of a language should be seriously considered in understanding poetry. When certain grammatical deviations known as poetic license are found in a poem, it is really hard to translate the poem retaining literary subtleties. In reviewing a variety of English translations of Korean poetry, it has been argued in this paper that grammatical consideration is necessary to translate poetry properly and accurately. In other words, we reconfirm that for better translation of a poem, some grammatical aspects of the poem should be taken into consideration. The grammatical aspects of Korean poetry analyzed in this paper include five grammatical phenomena: linguistic empathy, case markers, plurality, dialect, language-proper expressive way of thinking. First, the previous English translations do not pay much attention to the use of the prefinal ending ‘- -’ However, the proper translation of the suffix ‘- -’ appearing in a poem is necessary to show the emotional change of a poet’s point of view. Second, the discourse-based grammatical difference between the two particles ‘-i/-ga’ and ‘-en/neun’ should be properly reflected in translating poetry in depth. Furthermore, the particle ‘-eul/leul’ occurring with an intransitive verb can be treated as a poet’s intention aiming for dynamic expression. Third, with relation to plurality, both the use of the unmarked plural form and the repetitive use of the same diction should be reflected in translation. Fourth, in translating poetry, we should give attention to the poetic effect of dialectal vocabularies intentionally selected by poets. Finally, we should note that each of language-proper expressions indicates its own way of thinking and its color. In general, poetic license found in the poetry of a language cannot be separated from grammatical aspects of the language. Poets often use some unusual but refreshing features of grammar in order to break their stereotyped languages. This peripheral or marginal use of grammar can be regarded as poetic license.

    Urban Entropy and Sustainability: A Theological Study on the Urban Entropy System

    DONG WAN GIMM | 2022, 58() | pp.95~116 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
    This paper defines a city as a spatial device that locally manages entropy. This paper attempts to reconstruct the concept of a city necessary to faithfully fulfil the demands of the times of transition to a sustainable city. First, the discussion starts with a brief introduction to entropy, a review of existing studies on urban entropy, and a simple thought experiment to infer how changes in the human settlement system have managed entropy. Afterwards, we look at the changes in outline by looking at the process of human urbanization, especially the historical experience of modern cities. Finally, the developmentalist urbanization of South Korea is outlined with the concept of an entropy management device, and a theoretical review of its characteristics and structure is carried out. This study diagnoses the entropy characteristics of individual cities called apartment urbanization in Korea's inter-city division of labour.

    Theory of Friendship in Urban Societ

    SEUNG WON SHIN | 2022, 58() | pp.117~141 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
    This study examines the meaning of friendship implied by Lefebvre's urban theory. Urban theory of Lefebvre is a liberating urbanism. By presenting his vision of transition to urban society, Lefebvre seeks to confront the oppressive power of the system to use urban space as a tool for economic growth. The core lies in the everyday practice of space users. I tried to interpret this way of practice in connection with the friendship of urban dweller. According to this, Lefebvre's urban theory reveals the path to approaching the problem of friendship at the spatial level, allowing them to discover friendship as a boundary crossing and friendship as a trickster. In addition, Lefebvre's discussion is not based on the ideals of an autonomous individual, but rather on the meaning of friendship as an lived experience and the importance of spatial capability accompanying it. Spatial capability is a capability that prevents the relationship of space users from being tamed or instrumented, and serves as the basis for pursuing friendship as a style of living.

    SU JIN KIM , PPUDAH KI , SURAN LEE | 2022, 58() | pp.143~172 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
    The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of childrearing calling—what constitutes the construct—in the Korean sociocultural context. The data were collected with purposive sampling, and 14 participants (8 women, 6 men) were recruited with the consideration of a proper age range. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that six themes of childrearing calling were drawn: ‘the characters and qualifications of parents’, ‘parental identity’, ‘destiny and responsibility’, ‘beliefs and orientation’, ‘passion and dedication’, and ‘meaningful growth of the parent and child.’ These themes were in line with the concepts of the childrearing calling discovered in the Western culture. New themes in Korean context that were differentiated from the Western findings were ‘the characters and qualifications of parents’ and ‘meaningful growth of the parent and child’. The theme ‘Destiny and responsibility’ was similar with the Western concept; however, the connotated intention of the theme was different in Korean context. This study expands the understanding of childrearing calling in Korea, and the results will be useful for future research on childrearing calling.

    A Study on Change of Traditional Medical Terms - From Folk Prescription to Folk Remedy -

    YOUNG WAN KIM | 2022, 58() | pp.173~197 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
    Medical treatments practiced in non-official circles were based on experience. Traditional Korean medical prescriptions were provided. Most of them were the administration of medicine prepared with medicinal herbs and the treatment of injuries. The terms in traditional medicine have been called by different names in different times. Medical books were published centering on Korean medicine during the Joseon Dynasty. These medical books describe folk prescriptions, mainly single remedies that use one or two ingredients. Collection of Korean Medicine, Classified Compilation of Medical Prescriptions, Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine, and Essays on Rural Life and Economy describe folk prescriptions. Under Japanese rule, newspapers introduced remedies that people use to treat diseases that occur in everyday life by the name of popular remedies or folk remedies. Traditional single remedies and newly emerging drugs and methods were introduced as well as treatment methods.

    One of important topics in clarifying the properties of Hangul information processing is on whether the location of syllable is specific or flexible in lexical acess. This study was conducted to investigate on whether the lexical variables can moderate Hangul syllable transposition effect, which is one of types of letter localization. Word frequency, neighborhood, and syllable frequency are main variables in lexical access. The research method was investigating the presence of interaction effect with the lexical variables manipulated. The results showed that no interaction effect was found, indicating rigidness of syllable localization in processing. The results implicates that the syllable letter of Hangul is localized firmly in a perceptual stage, and word frequency, neighborhood, syllable frequency acts in the following information stage. Hangul processing mechanism on results and related theoretical discussion are executed.

    Analysis of cases of abandonment of siege by the Roman army during the republican period

    Bae Eun Suk | 2022, 58() | pp.259~279 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
    This study analyzes the cases of republican Rome giving up the siege and the reasons for it. Scholars argued that there was no case of the Roman army giving up siege because of its strong aggressive tendencies. However, after analyzing a total of 167 sieges during the republican period, there were 28 cases where the Romans gave up sieges. Analyzing the reasons for abandoning the siege, there were times when there was a problem with the lack of siege equipment or the situation of the soldiers, that is, there was a problem with the Roman army. There were also times when the defensive force resisted by burning the Roman siege equipment, or gave up by responding to the Romans with swords and wild animals. In other words, the siege was abandoned when the resistance of the defensive force was not enough. Rome preferred a strategy of direct attack rather than simply building a encirclement net and waiting. As the Roman army aggressively entered the city or fortress of the defensive force, the latter had no choice but to respond for survival. The strong resistance of the the defensive force led to the abandonment of the siege. Scholars argued that the Romans never gave up siege because of their aggressive tendencies. However, it was not without the abandonment of the siege because the Roman army had an aggressive tendencies. Because the Roman army showed aggressive tendencies, more than half of them gave up the siege due to strong resistance from the the defensive force. Therefore, it can be said that there is a close relationship between the offensive tendency of the Roman army and the abandonment of the siege.

    A Study on the Adverb Use Patterns in Discussion Discourse of College Students : Focused on the perspective of Gender and Language

    JUN BEOM PARK | 2022, 58() | pp.281~311 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
    The aim of this study is to analyze the discussion discourse of college students conducted in the classroom and examine the adverb use patterns of male and female students from the perspective of gender and language. For this study, the use of degree adverb, conjunctive adverb, and other adverbs in the discussion discourse conducted by 20 students(11 female students and 9 male students) was examined. In adverb of degree, adverbs such as 'jogeum(조금), deo(더), da(다), yakgan(약간), manhi(많이)' showed high frequency of use. 'deo(더), da(다)' were mainly used in discussion discursive sequence rather than presentation discursive sequence, indicating that the two adverbs have a stronger character as spoken lnguage than as written language. In discussion discursive sequence, there was a significant difference in the frequency of use of 'deo(더), da(다)' for male students and the frequency of use of 'yakgan(약간)' for female students. In conjunctive adverb, adverbs such as 'geureomyeon(그러면), geureonde(그런데), geurigo(그리고), waenyahamyeon(왜냐하면)' showed high frequency of use. In presentation discursive sequence, male students showed a high frequency of 'waenyahamyeon(왜냐하면)', which supports that male students speak more consciously of the logical structure than female students. Among other adverbs, 'ildan(일단), ije(이제)' showed a significant frequency of use. In discussion discursive sequence, there was a significant difference in the frequency of use of 'ildan(일단)' for female students and the frequency of use of 'ije(이제)' for male students.
