How can we understand concepts of various abstractness and complexity through language and share them with others? The embodied approach and the disembodied approach show two opposing views to answer this fundamental question. While the traditional disembodied approach assumes that the meaning of language is innate and can be computed through the manipulation of abstract symbols that transcend bodily experience, the embodied approach assumes that the meaning of language is learned through bodily experience and that it is constrained and influenced by bodily experiences, directly or indirectly. Therefore, ultimately, the embodied approach should be able to explain that the concept, the meaning of language, and even the form of language are generated or influenced by bodily experience and socio-cultural interaction. This study will discuss several pathways through which the meaning and form of the Korean language are generated and formed on the basis of bodily experience and social interaction. It is noticeable that conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy, image schemas and basic domains can somehow emerge solely on the basis of bodily experience, whereas language acquisition and the networks of constructions necessarily involve both bodily experience and socio-cultural interaction.
