    Abstract
Purpose: The life span of a hospital building is short. This is because the building will have to be built up due to the fact that it can not cope with the new medical environment, it can not be replaced due to low floor height, lack of land. The purpose of the hospital building master plan is to find a way to fulfill its role in the long term. Methods: Comparison the proposals submitted by the master plan and the proposals submitted by the hospitals, the case of three hospitals that have established a master plan for the past three years. In addition, interviews with the designers who participated in the design competition and the administrator of hospital about the variables that occurred during the business process. Results: The result of this study can be summarized into four points. The first one is that master plan is changed by administrator of hospital so that Thy need to understand about the role of master plan. And next is to protect reduction of the project cost. Third, continuous participation of master plan researchers in following projects is good to communicate with administrator and designer. The last one is empathy of master plan by designer and users. Implications: It is necessary to reduce changing of master plan in design process for sustainable managing of hospital.

    Oh, Yeinn | Jeong, Dawoon | Kwon, Soon-Jung | 2018, 24(4) | pp.17~25 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract
Purpose: Korean society is undergoing the rapid increase and poverty of elderly population. Therefore, the appropriate supply and planning of public rental housing for the low-income elderly is more important. The purpose of this study is to present the basic data for the study and planning of the elderly housing complex by analyzing the cognitive characteristics of the elderly residing in the rental housing. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted to identify health characteristics of the elderly living in the 'Gongreung SH Apartment'. 100 random samples were collected and 82 valid samples were analysed. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel and R for the age, sex, health, outdoor walking frequency and characteristics of Cognitive map of the elderly. Results: The characteristics of cognitive map were classified into point shapes and linear shapes. The linear group was lower in average age than the point group and tended to draw the map wider. The wider the map was, the more the number of elements in cognitive map was. The number of elements on the cognitive map decreased as respondents’ age increased. On the other hand it was not related to residence period and gender of the elderly. Implication: The cognitive extent of the residential environment tends to decrease with age. Men's cognitive range is wider than women’s. There is no corelation between the number of cognitive elements and cognitive map type. Men tend to have a systematic image of city, whereas women focus on relational and social urban factors. For sustainable apartment complex design, various characteristics of the group including men and women, different age and different health status should be considered.

    Dong Hong Shin | Kwang-jae Park | 2018, 24(4) | pp.27~35 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract
Purpose: The diverse users and the increase of power wheelchair users have made it difficult to apply the standards of Wheelchair user accessible toilet rooms for the existing law and BF-certification. To address these issues, the standards of the relevant laws have been improved (Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2018), but there are still many problems. In this study, problems with the standards for Wheelchair user accessible toilet rooms in Korea are analyzed by comparing national and international standards. In addition, improvements to standards for Wheelchair user accessible toilet rooms will be suggested. Method: It presents improvement for standards of Wheelchair user accessible toilet rooms by comparing national, international standard and standards of many countries. Korean standard, International Standard(ISO 21542), American Standard(ADA Standards), German Standard(DIN 18040-1), Austrian Standard(ÖNORM B 1600) and Swiss Standard(Norm SIA 500) were investigated and analyzed. Results: Korea's standards differ from the ISO and the Standards of other countries in many ways, so there is a need for realignment. Specifications for disabled toilets and clear criteria for the size, shape, and location of sanitary appliances in toilets that are practically available to wheelchair users should be provided. Considering the increasing number of disabled toilet users, the installation of various disabled toilet rooms should be considered considering the user characteristics of those who can walk and wheelchair users. Implication: Recent partial improvements to relevant laws cannot meet the requirements of various users. Therefore, comprehensive and clear standard should be presented that take into account changing society and the environment.

    Shin, Hyun Soo | Kim Sung Hyun | Yang, Nae-won | 2018, 24(4) | pp.47~57 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract
Purpose and Methods: Currently, Korea has the lowest fertility rate among OECD countries. It is also true that from the aspect of encouraging childbirth policy, as the use of automobiles has increased, the interest in securing parking spaces has also become more important. However, there are efforts and researches on the supplying parking spaces for the general public in society not to the positive discrimination such as elders or pregnant women. On the other hand, there is a growing need for a dedicated parking space for pregnant women due to the changing social environment and increasing number of female drivers. At this point, proper design of the maternity parking spaces is essential. Therefore, this study is analyzing the characteristics of pregnant women such as measurements and certain actions and case studies of domestic and oversea. Through the analysis of these factors, the following results were derived. Results: First, it was determined that the important factor in the planning of the parking-block for pregnant women was the human body size of pregnant women. And the required dimensions of movement of pregnant women were derived. Second, the dimensions of automobile were analyzed and applied from the most used vehicles in the family composition. Third, after the observations, the status of the parking spaces of the pregnant women and observations showed that the drivers not only the pregnant women but others were using the spaces improperly. Fourth, at certain conditions of the parking spaces, in order to improve the efficiency of the parking spaces, it is necessarily considered that the usage of designated accessible parking spaces can be used together by not only the disabled but also to the passengers who are classified as ‘transportation weak’ such as pregnant women. Implications: In this study, the researcher will propose the shape and size of the parking-block for pregnant women considering the elements derived above.

    Abstract
Purpose: The concept of the Barrier-Free Design has steadily expanded into a basic principle of design, which can provide safe and convenient lives not only limited to the disables, elders, and pregnant women, but also to all members of the society. This is what we now know as the Universal Design. In other words, Barrier-Free Design for all is Architectural Approach of Universal Design. Thus, as a future-oriented alternative to school facilities according to social change, this study suggests basic direction of school building planning and concept of universal design considering school facilities characteristics. Methods: The characteristics of school facilities are understood from the perspective of Universal Design. In addition, a survey is conducted to identify the current state of school facilities. Result: Findings from this study are as follows. First, Universal Design of School Building is an integrated characteristic. Integration is intended to create and manage an integrated environment instead of an individual and one-time approach to installation and maintenance of convenience facilities. Second, It is a flexible characteristic to be sustainable. In other words, they aim to be selectable to respond to change. Third, It is a characteristic of accumulation of outstanding cases. This means that not only individual schools but also entire school spaces will be applied to Universal Design to form a virtuous circle of environment improvement. Implications: The results of this study may serve as a basic concept in the design of school buildings.
