    芦田 茂 | 2005, (54) | pp.149~177 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
This paper addresses the US Forces and Military Bases in Japan from 1945 to 1960 focusing on the impacts by the Korean War. The outbreak of the war, triggering the Peace Treaty and the Japan-US Security Treaty, had fundamentally redefined the strength of the US Forces and deployment in Japan. The Japan-US Security Treaty singed in 1951 had changed the US Occupation Forces into the deployed ones commissioned for keeping military balance in the East Asia and Deterring War. This paper studies on the characteristics of the US Forces in Japan transforming from the occupation forces, the UN Forces waging the war, to readiness-forces, and development of the Military Bases with three periods of occupation, transient and initial alliance periods. It assumes the close correlation of the US Government Policies reflecting of the 'Defensive Perimeter' announced by Dean Acheson, Secretary of the States Affairs in January 1950, the US National Security Counsel documents and so on. The paper argues that the outbreak of the war had been so critical in terms of the US Security Policy of Political Containment that the US Forces and Military Bases in Japan were totally redefined militarily to contain the growth of communism and seek for deterring another war in the Korean Peninsula as well as in the Asian Theater. Referring to the Japan-US Security issued in 1951, the US Commitment to prevent the war including Japan's Security Policy as the US Partner has been reflected on the Strength of the US Forces and Deployment of Military Bases in Japan. And it goes without saying that Japan has continuously supported the US Commitment. The Fundamental Military Framework in the East Asia has been formed by the outbreak of the Korean War and presently still remains irrespective of the End of Cold War.

The Reformation of Naval System and Tactics in the Late of Goryeo

    Limyong Han | 2005, (54) | pp.265~304 | number of Cited : 13
    Abstract PDF
The Goryeo Navy had a tactics dependent on large sized battleship. Large battleship was profitable in arrow shooting, which was the Goryeo Army's Traditional Skill, and the use of war instruments. On the other hand, Waegu(倭寇) preferred to boarding tactics with small and rapid ship. Since 1350, Waegu began to invade in Goryeo on large scale. The Goryeo Navy could not match them. In generally we have an idea that Goryeo failed to repulse invader because they flighted in land not sea. It is a miss understanding. The Goryeo Government knew to have to depend Waegu in the sea. But they could not do because Waegu overwhelmed the Goryeo's Navy in scale, although the Goryeo's Tactics depending bow and large ship requested more soldiers and ships. At last, King Gongmin(恭愍王) attempted to build battleships. But the Traditional Tactics needed too many ship beyond nation's capacity. To solve this problem, it is required to device a new tactics that was able to increase navy's power, especially in supremacy to ascending Waegu. Two plans were attempted. The first was employing marines from the coast province or island. They were dispatched for education of fighting skills and usage of new weapons to soldiers The second way, more important, was using of firearms. A cannon was little useful. It's power was weak and it had short range. More important weapons were the devices to attack enemies who intended to boarding. Hwatong(火桶) and Jilryeo-po(蒺藜砲) had good effects on attacking them, and compensated Goryeo navy's long timed weakness. This reformation succeeded. The Goryeo's Naval Tactics depending large sized battleship was changed to very good system against the Waegu. The Joseon succeeded to this reformation course. It became the a primary factor for overcoming Japanese invasion in the 16th century.
