    A Study on Oronce Finé’s World Maps: Focusing on the Symbolic Meaning of Heart Shape and East Asian Information

    Abstract
    The purpose of this paper is to explore Oronce Finé’s heart-shaped world maps in two aspects: symbolic meaning of heart-shape and East Asian information in the maps. Adopting cordiform map projection, Fine tried to present his royalty to the King Francine I and his love for heart sign. Representing Asia and North America as one continent, Fine drew East Asia based on Marco Polo and Pigafetta information. Patala region of India and Southern Brazil which may be interpreted as Indian region were marked in the northern part of Terra Australis, and this region was changed to Java la Grande in the Dieppe school of cartography.

    Enhanced Classification Schema of Earth Globes -Application of Bathymetry Data-

    Abstract
    Most globes show information on earth’s surface, but have limited information on the bathymetry. Most undersea features are yet to be discovered, and only 18% of sea surface is mapped in 500m expanse. As GEBCO (The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans) has archived several levels of bathymetry data over the world and tries to provide new style of globes. Authors try to classify globes by new scheme and give some vision to expand awareness of both bathymetry data and undersea features. Development of IT technologies expand the scope and information contents so much that cyber or digital globes show the nature of earth better than ever before. We performed SWOT analysis for the commercial use of globes with GEBCO’s bathymetry data set. We discussed educational issues in delivering various classes of globes to the classroom. This article may be a part of outreach activities of GEBCO products.

    Geographic Information Service of Literature Using Google Mashup: Case of Goethe’s Italian Journey

    The purpose of this paper is to implement the internet-based geographic information service of a literature with the development of GIS and IT. For this, this research tried to implement the Google Mashup service by extracting geographic knowledge and thinking of Goethe with the case of the literature 'Italian Journey'. In order to do it, eight categories were applied to extract geographic knowledge and thinking in the Goethe's Italian Journey. Next, the extracted texts were applied to the point locations where Goethe visited or stayed in Italian Journey, and the related data such as pictures, illustration, and video were collected and hyperlinked. In the perspective of cartography, in addition to the basic maps and functions from Google Maps, additional GIS files for administrative boundary, river, and city were converted to KML, and imported and incorporated into Google Maps for map service, which might help to understand the Geothe's geographical description about climate, geomorphology, and urban landscape of visited regions. Through this case study, I found the efficiency of GIS and internet map service for literature.

    Exploring Industrial Spatial Cluster of Seoul in Japanese Colonial Period Using AMOEBA Cluster Method

    This research investigates industries of Seoul (Kyungsung) under Japanese colonial period. As the major center of Chosun dynasty, Seoul had player central roles in industry in Chosun. Naturally, the analysis of Seoul industry is a key factor understanding industrial characteristics in Japanese colonial period. Many existing studies about Seoul industries only present descriptive and qualitative analysis, lacking quantitative significance tests and confirmation. This study approaches Seoul industries in the colonial periods in quantitative perspectives using AMOEBA (A Multidirectional Optimal Ecotope-Based Algorithm). AMOEBA is a widely applied popular cluster analysis method. The cluster analysis result presents that Yongsan and south of Cheong-gyecheon (stream) were identified as cluster of metal, machine, wood, and chemical industry. Changsin-dong and north of Cheong-gyecheon were identified as cluster of textile industry. Residential segregation in two major ethnic groups (Korean and Japanese) are explained to play major influence forming ethnically divided spatial patterns in industries. Japanese were dominant in metal, machine, and wood industry while Korean were dominant in textile. Other factors such as accessibility to urban center and railroad also influenced spatial distribution of industries.

    A Spatial Optimization Model for Delineating Housing Market Areas

    Housing market area (HMA) is a concept to reflect the spatiality of housing markets which are locally operated. Delineating HMA is required in order to analyze the dynamics of housing markets and to establish systematic plans for supply and demand of houses. The purpose of this study is to develop a spatial optimization model for delineating HMA in terms of mixed integer programming (MIP). The most important criterion for delineating HMA is the self-containment which means the internal cohesion of HMA delimited. In the MIP model, global self-containment evaluated for all delineated HMAs is considered as an objective function and local self-containment for individual HMA is considered as constraints. The developed MIP model was applied to migration between GUs of Seoul. 3 HMAs were delineated when supply-side and demand-side self-containments are 0.70 and 4 HMAs when both values are 0.65. MIP results were compared with those of Intramax. First, in MIP approach, HMAs were not organized hierarchically in contrast to the results of Intramax. Second, while Intramax found local optima, MIP approach always found the global optima when feasible solutions exist. Third, maximizing the global self-containment does not guarantee the improvement of local self-containment in all HMAs. These findings demonstrate that MIP approach is necessary to more clearly understand the structure of HMAs and Intramax as a HMA delineation approach has a clear limitation.

    Link Between Service Coverage of Slaughterhouse and the Potential Disease Transmission: Analyzing the Livestock Movements Data for Simulation Exercise (CPX)

    Abstract
    In this study we analyzed data on livestock movements to slaughterhouse, which were extracted from the KAHIS (Korean Animal Health Integrated System) and provided by Quarantine Inspection Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Specifically, the coverage of the slaughterhouse was explored and presented for typical example cases, and the results were visualized in the form of a spatial map using GIS. Although the coverage of slaughter service varied depending on the geographic locations of each slaughterhouse, the number of farms nearby, and the number of consumer’s market, the majority of slaughterhouse covered whole country. This finding suggests that an epidemic once occurred in a random area is not localized minimally but likely to spread rapidly throughout the country and such a wide-connected slaughter coverage is of particular important from an epidemiological perspective. The results of this study could be used in defining protection zone for target surveillance, for detecting high-risk slaughterhouses both for contracting and spreading an infection, and as inputs for simulation exercise of livestock disease transmission.
