The revised Lifelong Learning Act of 2007 introduced a new national literacy program which would provide academic recognition to the results of adult literacy programs. Based on this act, the government has begun a lower secondary literacy program since 2013. As a result, it has produced first graduates of the program in 2016. Thus, this study aims to explores the experiences of adult educators who have participated in the program. A case study design is used to gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences.
The results reveal that most of participants who used to be a school teacher for many years have experienced significant changes in their roles and identities throughout the program. They have joined the program as a volunteer by chance after retirement, but later have become as adult educators by interacting with adult learners. To become an excellent adult educator, most participants have developed various teaching strategies and have studied the characteristics of adult students. Despite these efforts, most of them have struggled a lot since they have not received the administrative support necessary for adult education. The lack of professional development program has especially added to their difficulties. These results suggest that the government improve the working conditions of adult educators and also develop professional development programs for them.
