    Abstract PDF
The Education of Classical Literature at the University and the Future Prospect Chung, Byung-Heon This study is aimed for examining the present education of classical literature at the university and presenting ways to solve the problem. In many ways of examining the situation, we are focused on the view of the justifiability that classical literature should be considered as the literature itself and establishment of various ways to examine the literature. The basic concept of this study is that the undoubted essential statement -classical literature should be considered as the literature -has been missing in our education field until these days. Consequently, there is no doubt that we couldn't meet the goal to enhance imaginative power in the classical literature education field. The essential content of literature education was mostly shifted to the contemporary literature field and there has been only outward of literature education in classical literature education. Therefore, it is necessary to recover the essence of reading literature which is the consensus among readers within the approach of focusing the main subject, which is important in daily reading. In studying classical literature, it is considered as an overemphasis of studying writers and literary works. The literature is consist of a writer, literary work, the universe and reader. The literature education until now was mostly based on the understanding of the writer and the thought in literary works. It is also found in contemporary literature area, therefore the literature education was mostly for delivering outward knowledge of the literature rather than approaching the literature itself. Therefore, it is necessary to recover the fundamental principle of the literature, that is the literary work is completed with the interest of the literary work and consensus among readers.

A New Direction and Method for Teaching Classical Novels in Korean Universities

    Kwon, Sun-keung | 2007, 0(15) | pp.27~58 | number of Cited : 20
    Abstract PDF
A New Direction and Method for Teaching Classical Novels in Korean Universities Kwon, Sun-Keung Teaching classical novels in colleges needs to be changed according to new educational environments. Rather than pursuing easy frameworks of settled instructions, the diversity of general education programs should be sought. Nowadays, many of Korean literature majors have been entering the industry of education and culture. Accordingly, the instruction in Korean departments should be transformed by not giving too much stress on the <theoriy of classical novel>. Listed are some of the possible subjects: Courses in General Subjects: <Classical Novels and Digital Narratives>, <Classical Novels and Culture Contents>, <Classical Novels and Cinema>, <Classical Novels and Image Culture>, <Classical Novels and Culture Art>, <Classical Novels and Journey of History> Courses in Major Field: <Re-readings of Classical Novels>, <Reaching out for Classical Novels>, <Classical Novels in the Age of Multimedia> Undoubtedly, there should be flexible shifts in courses between general subjects and major fields. Some real courses could be divided into three steps: 1) Reading novels thoroughly; 2) Producing some fruitful discussions based on previous readings; 3) Opening new pathways for modernistic recreation. Some of the suggested methods are: ① Expanding texts; ② Searching for ways in the relationship with movies; ③ Comparing digital proses with classical novels; ④ Comparing the genre of culture art and classical novels.

About a New Direction of Oral Literature Education in the University —Focused on the Example of ‘Myth Contents Lecture’ Shin, Dong-Hun The theme of this essay is the education of literature in the university. What should be the purpose of literature education? I think students should become specialists of literature and serve as specialists in real society. There are various ways of achieving this purpose. One way is to incorporate ‘cultural contents’ in literature education. I have given several lectures that have related cultural contents to works of literature. In this essay I introduce an example of ‘myth contents lecture' performed during the 2th semester of 2006. The theme of the lecture is associating cultural contents with Korean myths. As a result, I realized that the content planning lecture is a promising teaching methodology of literature education, especially regarding classical oral literature. Students showed a lot of interest and participated eagerly in the lecture which reflected in the quality of their work. I wish they would become specialists of Korean literature who play important roles in society. It requires further research to determine whether this methodology is effective in literature lectures to cultural contents.

The role of traditional humanities for the development of the cultural tourism industry

    정요일 | 2007, 0(15) | pp.115~141 | number of Cited : 4
    Abstract PDF
The role of traditional humanities for the development of the cultural tourism industry Chung, Yo-Il What is the ‘Munwha’[culture]? The ‘Mun’ is that the morality[fresh or chaste] is shiny and bright, and the ‘Wha’ is to be changed into good people or a better world being taught and realized. Therefore, ‘Munwha’[culture] means the condition or degree on which people are changing into good people and customs, civilizations and institutions are changing into bright picture of shiny morality. What is the ‘KwanKwang’[tourism]? This means looking into the brilliant achievement of the country. So it is just not the purpose for the tourism to sightsee the noted mountains and large rivers or historical remains, and to look around the tangible and intangible cultural heritages exteriorly. Now we have to promote the cultural tourism industry to the direction in which foreigners can think of Korea as the country of morality or courtesy when they meet koreans and they look around the moral traditions or traces of korean civilization. Also, we have to develop cultural products according to this point of view. We have been short of such preparations. we do not have enough information signboards for the roads or remains and do not have enough explanations which can lead people's interests. And we do not develop the standardized map of history and culture. This makes it possible for them to plan tours effectively within limited time looking the internet sites obviously and clicking them before foreigners invite Korea. And we neglected the education of morality and manners which can give a deep impression to others. Also recent education system did not support these educations. The people who are related with these parts should work in close cooperation keeping it in mind that education, finally, is to train cultural people.

    Hyunjoo Kim | 2007, 0(15) | pp.143~168 | number of Cited : 4
    Abstract PDF
‘Vital Creating of tone and atmosphere’(氣韻生動) in Korean Classical Novel Kim, Hyun-Joo Korean Classical Novel and Landscape Painting are very different on the media's character, but they have similar elements on their deep structure. It's mainly because eastern ancient thinking paradigm affect many eastern artistic genres, to some extent because certain principle or convention of Landscape Painting influence on the forming process of Korean Classical Novel. Here we treat Yin-Yang(陰陽)'s paradigm as eastern ancient thinking paradigm, and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere(氣韻生動)’ as principle or convention of Landscape Painting. Our focus is on the compositional traces of Korean Classical Novel affected by Yin-Yang's paradigm and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere’ of Landscape Painting. Such traces can be seeked at sphere of the binary oppositional concepts like as ‘movement(動)’ and ‘stillness(靜)’, ‘brightness(明)’ and ‘darkness(暗)’, and ‘straight(直)’ and ‘curve(曲)’ which are configurated on Korean Classical Novel. The sphere of ‘movement(動)’ and ‘stillness(靜)’ is embodied by the patternning through crossing over and repetition of 'affair' and 'non-affair', ‘brightness(明)’ and ‘darkness(暗)’ by the control of hero or heroine's live by heavenly order, foreshadowing by dream and prophecy, intercourse between live man and woman's soul etc., and ‘straight(直)’ and ‘curve(曲)’ by crossing over and repetition of ordinary talk and reciting of poems. Thus Korean Classical Novel has a certain sphere which is composed by Yin-Yang(陰陽)'s ancient thinking paradigm and ‘vital creating of tone and atmosphere’ principle of Landscape Painting.

Gap between Norm and DesireSexuality in the Novel in Joseon Period

    서지영 | 2007, 0(15) | pp.241~272 | number of Cited : 17
    Abstract PDF
Gap between Norm and Desire —Sexuality in the Novel in Joseon Period Suh, Ji-Young Pursuit for the eros in human life is one of universal desires that the men have. In the Eastern culture, there is the icon of ideal couple called “a meeting of pungnyujeja[a man of talent and elegance] and yojosuknyo[a chaste lady with refined manners]”. However, the way the ideal love is realized in real life is differentiated in the historical context, because the idealogical and social mechanism which are the constituents of the society get involved in the way the eros is expressed. In Joseon period, it has been said that the sexuality which is the source of human desire was suppressed by the asceticism of confucian ideology. Nevertheless, we can find the traces of desires slipping from the grip of confucian norms in the fictional discourses like novel. This paper tries to illustrate the relation between sexual love and marriage in pre-modern period by analyzing the romance narratives produced in Joseon period from the early part, through the middle part, to the later part, finally questing for the historical meaning of the way the erotic desire was expressed each period.

It depicted the miserable situations of people who suffered from tax system and pointed out the solution of that had to be suggested in System dimension. Hyangchon-sajok felt the same pain of people in Hyangchon and spoke for them. Conversely, Kyungwa-sajok used the existing types of Gasa and described pain of people in Hyangchon just in part. Futhermore they recognized it as not social but individual problem. They looked at people from official positions or kept a certain distance from them. The differences between Hyangchon-sajo and Kyungwa-sajok in consciousness were caused by the different basis of life. Their different social, politiacl, economic and cultural situation brought a remarkable contrast in Gasa.

The Satire Patterns and Writer's Consciousness in Aenggumoksongwagalseonsaengjeon

    장예준 | 2007, 0(15) | pp.335~366 | number of Cited : 1
    Abstract PDF
The Satire Patterns and Writer's Consciousness in Aenggumoksongwagalseonsaengjeon Jang, Ye-Jun This study presents the results of an investigation into the satire patterns of A Song Contest among the Ibis in Cheongseongjapgi, how they were changed in Aenggumoksongwagalseonsaengjeon, and what new meanings were revealed in the work. As mentioned in the previous study, A Song Contest among the Ibis in Cheongseongjapgi focuses on the criticism of "unjust rulings by dishonest bribery." In the work, every one of the characters is satirized. Aenggumoksongwagalseonsaengjeon follows the basic structure of A Song Contest among the Ibis in Cheongseongjapgi and further adds a story of "boasting noble families," changing the characters into the individuals representing the ruling class of the times including the middle class between the nobility and common people. Depicting their conspiracy based on bluff and "homogeneity," the author sneers at the reality that no one from the ruling class is qualified to lead the society in the right direction. The author also reveals the reality that no one deserves the expectation that he will lead the society that's full of conflicts of material interest among the members to the right path. Under the pressure of the reality that only conflicts of material interest remain with the spiritual values deteriorated, the intellectuals have lost their sense of direction. Their despair is also well described in the work based on the author's cool-headed perception of the reality where people are confronted with each other for their own desire and interest.
