The Soft Power Effect of BTS

    Chung, Tae-il | Choi, Yena | Kim, Yean-Hoy | 2021, 5(1) | pp.51~76 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Since the 1990s, the international community has shifted from a military-oriented hard power to a soft power that values culture and morality. Soft power is the opposite of hard power, which secures its national interests through the superiority of military power, a physical means, and the ability to get what one wants by attracting people's minds rather than by force or compensation. Therefore, this study analyzed BTS’s activity from a soft power perspective. First, in the effect of spreading Korean traditional culture, BTS sublimated Korean cultural heritage into universal value of mankind by applying Korean traditional culture to choreography. Second, in the effect of globalization of the Korean language, BTS contributed to the globalization of Hangul by applying the Korean alphabet, the identity of Korea, to the song. Third, in the universal effect of human rights and peace, BTS tried to spread the universal values of mankind by UNICEF activities, atomic bomb T-shirts, Nazi-style hats, and opinions on the Korean War. In conclusion, the soft power effect of BTS contributed to the future-oriented values by reconstructing Korean traditional dances to spread consensus on Korean culture, forming a friendly feeling toward Hangul through Korean lyrics, and spreading the perception that peace is more important than war.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the main factors behind Bangtan Sonyeondan(BTS) representing the third Korean Wave boom at its center was supported by the younger generation and created a fandom and to identify the factors of the difference in perception of Korea between the older and younger generations in Japan. The rising popularity of BTS among the younger generations of Japan is based on the fact that the concept of Japanese idol (fans support inexperienced and immature idol to growth them) created in the 1980s has appeals no longer to the younger generation. They are enthusiastic about BTS, an idol perfect in all aspects and responding to and communicating with them always. It was shown that the most important reason for the difference in perspectives between the generations on Korea and the Korean Wave was that each generation trusts and watches different media.

    Kim Ji Min | 2021, 5(1) | pp.183~214 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
In Korea, since 2000, discussions and studies on the domestic welfare state are actively underway. Most of the research topics are about what the conditions are for Korea to become a welfare state and what its strategy is. However, many studies are already discussing Korea as a welfare state, or under the premise that its goal is to become a welfare state in Europe. In other words, it shows the conclusion that most of the studies, such as debates on the types and characteristics of welfare states, converge to European welfare states. However, can the European welfare state model be a reasonable alternative in Korea's many limited systems? Also, is it possible to apply Europe's welfare state model based on Korea's welfare philosophy and political system? raise a question called. This paper first explained the European welfare state model using Asping Anderson's “classification of welfare state types” and discussed the success factors of the welfare state in five ways. In addition, after comparing the political structures of Korea and Europe, the limitations of the welfare state that Korea aims for were examined, and the co-evolutionary state, ecological state, innovative state, well-off state, and knowledge state were suggested as new state models. In conclusion, this paper is a basic nature of thinking about whether welfare in Korea's frame is a perfect welfare system and presenting a new state model other than welfare state for the future development of Korea.

    Abstract PDF
This study is to present non-traditional security threats and measures to establish the role of the military. To this end, a review of the concept of non-traditional security threats and the fields and scope that the military can support must be conducted in parallel. This would suggest the direction of development of all systems and capabilities to carry out the new defense role, and provide a clues for the direction of revision of all laws. The field and scope that the military can support can be divided into areas that perform a preventive role in the field of disaster and terrorism, the field that performs its mission as an initial agency in the event of a disaster or terrorism, and damage recovery and reconstruction activities. In order to carry out these re-established military roles and missions, it is necessary to discover the scope and field of missions that can achieve synergy effects with wartime missions, and improve the system and amend laws and regulations.

The ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ and ASEAN countries’ responses toward China

    KIM, Jin Young | 2021, 5(1) | pp.235~270 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
The paper throws a question whether the ASEAN countries will be under the dominant Chinese influence with the progress of “the Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI). In order to research this question, this study suggests two variables with which to examine the realities of the BRI in ASEAN countries. One is the approach to China by political leaders of ASEAN countries and the political dynamics; The other is restraint and denial of China’s dominance by ASEAN countries. When the realities of BRI in ASEAN countries are examined focusing on the two variables, we can find that the BRI projects are not carried out by the Chinese influence unilaterally. On the contrary, political leaders of the ASEAN countries often accept and adjust the BRI projects according to their economic necessities and conditions, and responding to the political dynamics of their countries. Also, whereas the ASEAN countries continue economic cooperations with China, they try to restrain strengthening political aggressiveness of China in the region. The strategy of pursuing the maximization of economic interests on the one hand and restraining the increase of political dominance on the other hand is called the ‘hedging strategy’. This paper takes two example cases of Malaysia and Myanmar and shows how the political leaders in these countries cancelled and scaled back the BRI projects in the context of the political dynamics, according to their economic conditions. The degree of hedging against Chinese influence varies depending upon countries. Nevertheless we can argue that ASEAN countries accept the BRI projects with the ‘economic pragmatism’ but try to balance out the increasing Chinese political influence and military aggressiveness by cooperating with other Indo-Pacific nations. The latter policy of cooperating with other competing Indo-Pacific countries is a sort of ‘indirect balancing’ strategy. The ASEAN countries want to keep the ‘ASEAN centrality’, refusing to fall under the Chinese dominance.

Dunhuang dance is one of the Chinese classical dance genres, and it is the dance with the most ethnic characteristics in the history of ancient Chinese dance. Incorporating the characteristics of the folk dance of the ancient Western Regions countries, and at the same time having a strong Buddhist color, it shows the ancient Chinese music and dance art, directly or indirectly reflects the living conditions of the ancient people, and contains the form and characteristics of ancient Chinese dances, and Chinese culture and history for more than a thousand years. Dunhuang frescoes preserve a large amount of ancient dance materials, which provide inspiration for contemporary dancers. Through the research and re-creation of Dunhuang mural dances, the dancers reproduced the dance costumes and music of ancient Dunhuang dances and enriched the content of contemporary Dunhuang dance works. However, there are not many academic studies on Dunhuang dance, especially in recent years, the research on the representative work of Dunhuang dance "Yuanqidunhuang" is unprecedented. "Yuanqidunhuang" looks at the creative inheritance of Dunhuang dance, and hopes to contribute to the development of related fields in the future through the systematic analysis of "Yuanqidunhuang". Therefore, this research takes the historical development of Dunhuang dance as a clue, through literature research, case studies, and video research on the Dunhuang dance "Yuanqidunhuang" created and performed in 2015. The characteristics of the work of "Yuanqidunhuang" are the background of its creation. Analyze characteristics, form and content, music, costumes, props, actions, etc. It is hoped that through this research, we can further understand Dunhuang dance, including the long history and rich meaning of Dunhuang culture, and ultimately contribute to the inheritance and development of Dunhuang dance.
