In this study, the evaluation index of Reachability/Accessibility is proposed to analyze the development process of the Chinese ancient cities quantitatively. According to the Chinese ancient literatures, the core facilities of capital cities can be thought as royal palaces. The layout of royal palaces is generally selected in consideration of the safety and controllability. The location of the royal residential area should meet the demand of the highest ruler’s accessibility and the safety of reachability. The methodology is based on the existence of directional links on city space network to evaluate the index of Reachability/Accessibility in a particular area. The following measures are performed; first, electing three typical Chinese ancient cities chronologically. Second, abstracting through applying the directional network. Third, calculating the degree of Integration and Integrated using the directivity network. Fourth, outputting the index of Reachability/Accessibility of the nodes on city space network. Fifth, The Reachability/Accessibility indicators can be used to verify the usefulness of the previous studies claiming quantitatively. This index can show the characteristics of the city space structure quantitatively and then explore the development process of the Chinese ancient cities.
