As social exclusion caused by housing became evident in public rental housing complexes, a Social Mix policy was introduced to promote housing equality and social integration by encouraging residents from different social and economic backgrounds to live together within housing complexes. This study empirically analyzes the perception of public rental housing residents in Seoul, who are stakeholders in terms of social exclusion and the social mix policy, regarding social mix(class mix and housing mix), focusing on their residential environment evaluations and social capital.
The analysis is based on the panel survey data of Seoul’s public rental housing residents that was conducted in 2019. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The residential experiences of public rental housing residents in mixed-use complexes had a positive impact on class mix and housing mix, and residents with higher levels of social capital tended to choose to expand and strengthen social mix. And when the residential environment and housing satisfaction was evaluated negatively, there was a preference towards class mix and housing mix.
