The Aesthetic Consciousness of the Traditional Korean DanceMalborg Kim, Ph.D.Professor of DanceEwha Womans UniversityThis study started from the question of what constitutes the beauty in Korean Dance. And it is based on the assumption that the characteristics of korean dance can be explained fully when the Korean spirit of Art is understood. Thence the art spirit and aesthetic consciousness of Korean Art was summarized in the context of Taoistic and Confucian thoughts which this writer considers as the two main bases of Eastern Philosophy. From this findings, it became clear that the concept of art, the artistic value and the aesthetic attitude in Korean Art were quite different from that of Western Art. Thus from the viewpoint of Korean art spirit, the artistic characteristics and the structure of expression in Korean dance were reviewed in four major points.Aesthetic consciousness evident in the perception of technique, expression, interpretation and tempo of Korean Dance was totally different from the western perspective on dance.

A Study on the Characteristics of Choehyun's Dance- Focused on 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」 -Myung-sook KimProfessor of DanceEhwa Womans UniversityThis thesis is on the life and characteristic of works of Choehyun, mainly in「Bisang」and 「Heohangcho」. Choehyun was a dancer and choreographer pursuing for freedom and wholeness to the extent that he is called the last romanticist. The fascination of the dance of Choehyun is that it represents the beauty of space in every movement through movements among stillness. It looks like an image of a painter drawing a Korean picture, considering hand movements as lines and spaces. The effusive gusto arising from the body sometimes stops and sometimes continues. Then I can describe that there is patience persevered through deep sorrow and grief on his sculpturesque blue and white face.Looking into his masterpieces such as 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」, I can find the following features. In his 「Bisang」 first performed in 1978, there are features first, sanghajitimsae as a leaping dance gesture, second, the quintessence of graceful dance of man, third, beauty and mirth represented through unrestricted spirit of Korean dance, and fourth, the exquisite harmony of music and dance. In his 「Heohangcho」 first performed in 1994, there are features first, the beauty of space throughout the work, second, quiet dance gesture like jwawooealmsae, third, the inner spirit of the artist freed himself from self-adherence.Taking a look at the choreographic background and the characteristic of the dance in Choehyun?s works, mainly in 「Bisang」 and 「Heohangcho」, I focused on the revaluation on his world of art. Since this is the first thesis on Choehyun who ended his life as the best dancer and choregrapher of the times, I think this is not enough due to lack of preceeding materials but I hope this will be the beginning point of various approach to his world of works.

    Abstract PDF
Look into Exchange of Dance with Music Between Song Dynasty and Koryo Dynasty by the 「Hyun Sun Do」Shim Sook-kyungDoctor Course, Beijing Normal University「Hyun Sun Do」(present peaches for immortal) is one of the existent Tang Dynasty music works which was introduced from Song Dynasty during Koryo. Dynasty. It is base on the myth story that Xi Wang Mu (the Queen Mother of the West) descended from the fairyland to present the peaches for immortal to kings at festa. In the history and myths of China and Koryo, Xi Wang Mu was the oldest and very important goddess who was the most popular god for long time. In the ancient myths, Xi Wang Mu who lived in the Kunlun Mountain at first was half beast - half human, and gradually transformed into beautiful goddess and Ormazd who was in charge of fairy prescription. In the Han Dynasty, prevailing of ?Wei Si Ru Sheng? (think death as live) and Taoism ideology, Xi Wang Mu got higher Status, and became worship goddess. We could say that the 「Hyun Sun Do」which was introduced in Koryo Dynasty was such work which reflected the image and concept of Xi Wang Mu through Yue Wu(dance with music). Because 「Hyun Sun Do」 was introduced from Song Dynasty, it?s form appears to involve dance, sing and play music like Song Dynasty Da Qu(one dance with music form in Song Dynasty). And after introduction there also be some situations that only extracted brilliant part from it. Most lyrics in 「Hyun Sun Do」 which was written in music part of Koryo annals was similar with that was written in the <Song lyrics collection>. It is also demonstrated that Song lyrics and Song music works using Song lyrics impacted on the Koryo music directly. Through the Choson Dynasty the introduced music gradually changed into country music and local music through meeting her own national aesthetics and tradition.

The Korean-Chinese national dance can be a small furnace in the great furnace of China in the same sense of the whole culture. In other words, the Korean-Chinese dance in china has played a very important role in view of tolerance and acceptance of culture. Under the conditions of political disputes between South and North Korea in the Korean Peninsula, the Korean-Chinese dance plays a role of equidistance and vitalizes the development of the Korean race?s dance greatly. But, with respect to the Korean-Chinese dance in China, a bias to selection of traditional dances, lack of approaches to cultural spirit, and limitations of a sense of the subject should be solved in future.

A Study of Martha Graham?s Dance Pieces which were Based on Americanism- Focused on 「American Document」-Eun-sook ChoProfessor of DanceChaung-Ang UniversityIn modern dance, one name influenced the complete growth of dance: Martha Graham. As a dancer, choreographer, and teacher, she was the most famous, and most controversial. She set a standard for a new style of movement. We can see through modern performances and films of her own performances that her pieces were serious and profound.Especially, in 1930s and 1940s, Graham choreographed several pieces based on American themes such as 「American Provincials」, 「Frontier」, 「Chronicle」, 「American Document」, 「Appalachian Spring」, and 「Letter to the World」. When she choreographed she put in her own philosophical ideas, and generally stayed away from political commentary. But in one piece, 「American Document」, she included not only philosophical ideas but also political content. This piece was an unexpected step in Graham?s development. It premiered in Bennington, Vermont, on August 6, 1938, and toured for nearly three years. But after that, it was lost. Unlike many of her pieces, it has been out of the repertoire even though it was a major work. Now, sixty-four years later, it is difficult to decipher. The study illustrates Graham?s dance pieces which were based on American themes in 1930s and 1930s. Also, the development of the 1938 「American Document」 will be explain ed.
