A Study on the Word Classification and the Meaning of the Term “Tong” in the Dictionary of the 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》

    Kim Jong-Chan | 2019, (54) | pp.3~16 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
According to the 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》 dictionary, the Chinese term “Tong” has the word classification of adjective, verb, adverb and preposition. I agree with the dictionary’s classification as an adjective, adverb, and preposition, but I don’t entirely agree with it’s classification as a verb. 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》 classifies the term, “Tong” in usuage as “Tong Ganku Gong Huannan” as an adverb, but I think that it is a verb. If we look for the term, “Gong” which is deeply related to the “Tong”, we can easily find that “Tong” and “Gong” have the same meaning of “Gongtong chengshou” or “Gongtong Juyou” when they are used in the structure of “Tong Ganku Gong Huannan”. Given this, we come to the conclusion that the verb “Tong” has two different meanings. So we should revise the definition of the word “Tong” in the 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》 dictionary.

    Abstract PDF
Ellipsis is a common linguistic phenomenon, which not only helps to construct cohesion and coherence among sentences in context but also facilitates to highlight new information. Therefore, there is ellipsis in both spoken and written texts. Ellipsis is also an old problem in the study of Chinese and Korean. In the past, Chinese and Korean grammarians mainly focused on the elements omitted and ellipsis types, and less research was done on the comparative study of ellipses in Chinese and Korean. To be concrete, that is almost in a blank state. This paper chooses 2019 New Year's greetings of the two country leaders as the example to get the overall statistics of ellipsis use frequency and intends to find out whether there is difference between Chinese and Korean written language resulted from diversified languages, different thinking styles and cultural distinctions by means of comparing the following three aspects: sentence structure, syntactic component and recall constituent types so as to prove the prevalence of elliptical sentences. Furthermore, not all the ellipsis phenomena are the same. In Chinese President Xi jinping's 2019 New Year's speech, ellipses account for 77%, most of which occur in clauses. It is common to omit time adverbial and subject due to the linguistic context. While in President Moon Jaein's 2019 New Year's speech, 61% of the ellipses take place in the subordinate structure, and it is common to omit the subject due to the situational context.

    YOU,JAE-SUNG , Yongtae Lee | 2019, (54) | pp.61~92 | number of Cited : 0
    Abstract PDF
Taiwanese women have been discriminated against because of various factors, such as feudal traditions, but gained their independence by receiving new Japanese education under Japanese colonial rule. While the times have changed in the novels of Wu Zhou Liu, there has been a traditional woman figure who still lives with the traditional way of thinking, while an anti-traditional woman figure who tries to overcome it and live independently. In this paper, I analyzed how the traditional woman figure and the anti-traditional woman figure that were opposite were drawn in the novel of Wu Zhou Liu. Belonging to the former is Lan Ying of <shuiyue>, Doctor Mother of <Doctor Mother>, A Cha of <Asian Orphans>, and the latter belong to Yue Gui of <Gold Carp in the Mud>, Yue Ying of <Tang Qian Zai>, Yue Lan of <Manager of Pittsdam>, and Shu Chun in <Asia Orphans>. Although the times have changed, they have depicted Taiwan's traditional feminine form by responding silently under the patriarchal system and blindly maintaining traditional customs. On the contrary, all of them were anti-traditional women of the time, expressing their actions and dissatisfaction as Yue gui to reality, Yue ying as suicidal suicide, Yu lan as betrayal, and Shu chun as part of a more active act.

    Abstract PDF
A new index called Sinicization Index was proposed to measure the Sinitic influence on the countries in Sinosphere. The index was defined as the degree of reliance on the intellectual heritages Sinic civilization produced. Confucianism, Hanzi and Chinese calendar were considered as the intellectual heritages for formulating the equation of the index. The estimated scores of the index showed that the Sinitic influence on South Korea and Vietnam was greater than that on Japan at the present day.
