    Effect of Extractant on the Color Characteristics of Natural Colorant Extracts

    Abstract Natural colorant extracts were obtained by extraction from tumeric root, gardenia seeds, mugwort and green tea using water, methanol, ethanol and acetone as extractants at room temperature for 3 hours under shaking condition(180rpm) with liquor ratio(solid:solvent; 1:100). The main pigment components of tumeric root, gardenia seeds, mugwort and green tea are known to be curcumin, crocin, chlorophyll b and epigallocatechin gallate, respectively. The effects of the kind of extractant and pH on the color characteristics of natural colorant extracts were investigated. The solubility parameters of pigment components were determined to find adequate extractant. The solubility parameters of curcumin, crocin, chlorophyll b and epigallocatechin gallate were found to be 27.85, 29.40, 19.48 and 37.97(J/cm3)1/2. As expected, solvents that have a solubility parameter similar to that of pigment component were generally found to be effective to obtain pigment extracts having high visible absorbance(A). The extract(pigment/solvent) with high visible absorbance was generally found to have low L*(lightness) and high Chroma(C*, purity).

    Dyeing and Functional Properties of Cotton-Modal-Chitosan Blended Towel Fabric Dyed with Mugwort Colorants

    Abstract The objective of this study is to develop eco-friendly, functional towel material utilizing cotton-Modal-chitosan blended(C-M-CH) yarn and natural dyeing with mugwort colorants. Dyeing properties of towels with mugwort colorants were studied by investigating the effect of dyeing conditions including concentration of mugwort colorants, dyeing temperature, and dyeing time, and the effects of mordants on dye uptakes were investigated. The C-M-CH towel showed better dye uptake than 100% cotton towel with mugwort colorants. The shade of towels got darker and red-yellowish tint increased by mordanting. Comparing with 100% cotton towel, the colorfastness of dyed C-M-CH towel was satisfactory showing above 3 grade which is the lowest grade to washing fastness. The antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and deodorization performance of towels were excellent and improved by dyeing with mugwort colorants. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the cotton-Modal-chitosan blended towel dyed with mugwort colorants can be used practically for an eco-friendly and multi-functional towel materials with excellent absorbance and drying properties.

    Dyeability of the Fabrics dyed with Herb Extracts

    Abstract This study examined the dyeability of fabrics dyed with rosemary, mint, sage, and thyme herb extracts. The herb extracts were pulverized and characterized by UV and FT-IR analysis. Dyeing properties of herb colorants on cotton, silk and wool fiber and effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake were compared. The constituents of four different herbs were shown to be similar to each other. The dye uptake of rosemary and sage were shown to be larger than those of mint and thyme regardless of the fiber types. Affinity of herb colorants to protain fibers was higher than to cellulose fiber. Compared with silk and wool, the dyeability of cotton was the worse, the dye uptake of silk and wool fibers were increased along with dyeing time and dyeing temperature. As the dye uptake increased with increasing of the dye concentration, and its isothermal adsorption curves were langmuir type, indicating that ionic bonding was involved in the adsorption of herb colorants to the fibers.

    Evolution of Crystal Structure by Post-extension in Nylon 56 Fibers

    Abstract The crystal structure of nylon 56 fibers post extended by drawing process was investigated by synchrotron x-ray scattering measurement. In as-cast fiber, distinct (004) and (020) diffraction peaks were observed and they were related to initial metastable alignment of nylon molecules. With increase in the drawing ratio, (110) peak intensity was increased in vertical direction with decreasing (020) peak. At the same time, (004)’ peak evolved position tilted to 29 degrees from the (004) peak. This evolution is directly related to stable crystalline phase of nylon 56 originated from additional formation of hydrogen bondings between N-H and C=O by post drawing process. We also compared density variation, stress-strain curves of the fiber as a function of drawing ratio and strain. The variations of density and tanacity also supported the increase of stable structure of nylon 56.

    Synthesis of Polyurethane/Epoxy Hybrid Resin used for Damper of Loudspeaker

    As a coating material for loudspeaker dampers, resilient polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins were synthesized to replace conventional phenol resin and examined the physical properties, which are not only environmentally friendly but also not harmful to human. Five types of polyurethane resins were synthesized in the step-shot method using methylene diisocyanate, three polyols such as poly tetramethylene ether glycol(PTMEG, MW:2000), poly(1,4-buthylene adipate(PBAP, MW:2000), and poly carbonatediol(PCD, MW:2000), and three chain extenders such as ethylene glycol(EG), neopentyl glycol(NPG), and 1,4-buthandiol(1,4-BD). The five types of synthesized polyurethane resins and commercially available bisphenol A type epoxy resin were blended in weight ratios of 90:10, 70:30, and 50:50 to synthesize 15 types of polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins. Among the polyurethane resins, the one that was synthesized using PCD and 1,4- BD showed excellent tensile strength, 100% modulus, low extension, and relatively high viscosity. Polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins with higher epoxy resin contents showed better thermal properties and water resistance while those with higher polyurethane contents showed higher flexibility. The polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resin made by blending the polyurethane based on PCD and 1,4-BD with a bisphenol A type epoxy resin in a weight ratio of 70:30 was identified to be the most suitable to be used in speaker dampers.

    Comparative Analysis of Heat Sink and Adhesion Properties of Thermal Conductive Particles for Sheet Adhesive

    Improvement of heat sink technology related to the continuous implementation performance and extension of device-life in circumstance of easy heating and more compact space has been becoming more important issue as multi-functional integration and miniaturization trend of electronic gadgets and products has been generalized. In this study, it purposed to minimize of decline of the heat diffusivity by gluing polymer through compounding of inorganic particles which have thermal conductive properties. We used NH-9300 as Base resin and used inorganic fillers such as silicon carbide(SiC), aluminum nitride(AIN), and boron nitride(BN) to improve heat diffusivity. After making film which was made from 100 part of acrylic resin mixed hardener(1.0 part more or less) with inorganic particles. The film was matured at 80℃ for 24h. Diffusivity were tested according to sorts of particles and density of particles as well as size and structure of particle to improve the effect of heat sink in view of morphology assessing diffusivity by LFA (Netzsch/ LFA 447 Nano Flash) and adhesion strength by UTM (Universal Testing Machine). The correlation between diffusivity of pure inorganic particles and composite as well as the relation between density and morphology of inorganic particles has been studied. The study related morphology showed that globular type had superior diffusivity at low density of 25% but on the contarary globular type was inferior to non-globular type at high density of 80%.
