A Study on the Language Usage Aspect in TV Entertainment Program

The purpose of this paper is to examine the language usage aspect of the TV caption by analyzing the mass media language from the visual point of view, and examining the expression which caption has as a text. Caption is the text to act as communication between viewers and program. The function of caption first started with a purpose to provide basic information such as the title of the program, name of the person on-air, the name of the place, but now caption performs a function to enhance the effect of the broadcasting by communicating with viewers. Caption combining with the visual elements provides various kinds of information such as dialogue and psychological state, description of circumstances, and the story telling of producer particularly in case of entertainment program. In the present paper the 3,782 captured captions on TV entertainment program are studied for looking into expression form and function form. Expression form of caption is divided into image form and language form. Expression function of caption has a text playing roles in communication which are divided into speech delivery function, description function, explanation function and interpretation․evaluation function. Caption in the mass media language influences the younger generation in the digital era who is accustomed to the TV monitor. The communicative function that visual sign has in caption can also reflect younger generation's way of expression. This study has significance of looking into the Korean's language culture through caption which is used in mass media.
