	<title>1. 연구 배경 및 목적</title>
<p>본 연구는 한영 번역 과정에서 전문가와 학생의 검색 및 자기교정 작업을 비교 분석하여 학생의 문제점을 파악하고 앞으로의 개선 방향을 제시하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 번역자에게 검색과 자기교정은 번역 문제를 해결하고 번역 목적에 적합한 결과물 생산을 위해서 빠질 수 없는 작업으로, 작업 과정의 효율성 및 결과물의 품질 관리와 밀접하게 연결되어 있다는 점에서 중요성이 크지만, 문제 해결의 순간에 무의식적으로 활용되는 절차적 지식에 가까워 교육에 어려움이 있기 때문이다. 이러한 배경에서 전문가와 학생의 한영 번역 과정에서 첫째, 검색 과정의 측면에서 검색 시간, 채널, 세션, 검색어, 둘째, 자기교정 과정의 측면에서 움직임, 거리, 범위, 대상에 나타나는 차이점이 무엇인지를 살펴보고자 한다.</p>

<sec id="sec002">
<title>2. 연구 방법</title>
<p>이를 위해 본 연구는 문헌 연구와 실험 연구를 실시하였다. 문헌 연구에서는 국내외 번역학계에서 이루어진 실험 기반의 번역 과정 연구를 방법론적 측면에서 살펴보면서 연구 방법을 설계한 후, 번역 과정에서의 검색과 자기교정 작업을 분석한 선행 연구를 통해 분석틀을 도출하였다. 이처럼 문헌 연구를 통해 연구 방법론과 분석틀을 세운 뒤 실험 연구를 실시하였다.</p>
<p>본 실험에 앞서 전문가와 학생을 대상으로 예비 실험을 실시하여 발생 가능한 문제점을 최대한 보완한 후, 전문가와 학생 그룹으로 구성된 총 10명의 참가자를 대상으로 본 실험을 진행하였다. 본 실험에 참가한 전문가는 통번역대학원 졸업 이후 최소 5년 이상의 경력을 가지고 있는 참가자이며, 학생은 통번역대학원 번역학과 1학년 2학기에 재학 중인 학생이며 입학 전 실무 경험이 없는 참가자이고, 모든 실험 참가자의 모국어는 한국어이다. 약 160자 분량의 미-중 무역 갈등을 다룬 중앙일보 기사와 대외경제정책연구원의 경제 전망 보고서를 실험 텍스트로 활용하였다. 실험은 일대일로 실시하였으며 실험을 실시하기 전 워밍업 시간을 두었다.</p>
<p>번역 과정은 컴퓨터 화면 상에서 나타나는 모든 움직임을 영상으로 저장하는 스크린 레코딩 프로그램과 번역 과정에서 입력한 모든 자판과 자판이 입력된 시간, 순서를 순차적으로 기록하는 키스트로크 로깅 프로그램을 활용하여 기록하였으며, 본 연구는 캠타시아와 트랜스로그 프로그램을 활용하였다. 이 두 프로그램을 통해 기록된 데이터를 바탕으로 실험 참가자의 검색과 자기교정 과정을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다.</p>

<sec id="sec003">
<title>3. 분석 결과</title>
<sec id="sec003-1">
<title>3.1. 검색 과정</title>
<p>첫째, 검색 시간의 분석 결과, 전문가는 학생에 비해 검색 시간이 짧았으며, 검색 포즈의 빈도 역시 낮았고, 텍스트에 따라 그 차이가 더욱 두드러지게 나타났다. 다만 텍스트에 관계없는 개인적 성향도 나타났다. 전문가 그룹에서도 상당히 많은 시간을 검색에 쓰고 검색 포즈도 많은 참가자도 있었으며, 이와 달리 검색 시간과 포즈가 매우 적은 참가자도 있었고, 초안 작성 전 검색 시간을 길게 쓰는 참가자도 있었고 초안을 끝낸 뒤에 검색 시간을 가장 길게 쓰는 참가자도 있었다. 전체적으로 전문가가 검색 시간의 측면에서 더 효율적이라고 할 수 있으나, 전문가 역시 검색 시간의 합과 빈도, 지점의 측면에서 개인적 차이가 뚜렷하게 나타났다고 할 수 있다.</p>
<p>둘째, 검색 채널의 분석 결과, 학생은 전문가에 비해 사전 의존도가 매우 높았다. 하지만 검색엔진은 학생에 따라 다른 모습이 나타났다. 학생 세 명은 전문가만큼 때로는 그 이상 검색엔진을 많이 찾았지만, 두 명은 매우 제한적으로만 활용했기 때문이다. 검색 채널을 사전과 검색엔진으로 나누어 분석한 결과, 학생의 사전 검색 비중은 압도적으로 더 높았다. 전문가와 큰 차이 없는 빈도로 검색엔진을 활용하는 학생도 세 명 있었다는 점을 고려할 때, 학생은 검색엔진도 쓰지만 그 이상으로 사전을 많이 쓰고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 사전의 유형을 살펴본 결과, 전문가와 학생 모두 이중언어사전을 주로 활용하고 있었으며, 전문가와 달리 학생은 숙어, 유의어, 예문 검색을 더 자주 활용했고, 학술 검색, 블로그, 언어 검색엔진 등 검색 채널이 더 다양했다.</p>
<p>셋째, 검색 세션의 분석 결과, 학생은 전문가보다 텍스트에 관계없이 세션이 더 많이 나타났다. 전문가보다 학생은 원문에서 검색을 통해 해결하고자 하는 부분이 많았다는 의미다. 에피소드 한 개로 구성된 세션의 비중은 두 그룹 모두 약 76% 로, 전문가와 학생 모두 10번 중에서 7번은 하나의 포즈에서 검색을 끝내는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 전문가는 많아도 세 번의 포즈에서 검색이 완료된 반면, 학생은 그 이상의 포즈로 넘어간 경우도 있었다. 스텝 빈도에서도 전문가는 5개를 넘지 않았으나 학생은 10개까지 늘어나는 경우도 있었고, 전문가는 주로 은유, 용어에서 긴 스텝이 나타났지만 학생은 일반적 표현에서도 나타나, 때로는 비효율적인 긴 검색이 나타났다고 할 수 있다.</p>
<p>넷째, 검색어를 분석한 결과, 학생은 한국어 검색어의 선호도가 높았고 두 단어 이상의 한국어 검색어도 많이 활용하고 있었으나, 전문가는 영어 검색어의 선호도가 더 높았고 한국어 검색어는 제한적로만 활용했으며 두 단어 이상의 한국어 검색어는 거의 쓰지 않았다. 쓰는 경우에도 학생과 달리 검색엔진에서 검색하는 경우도 많았다. 전문가는 혼합 검색어도 자주 활용했다. 최초 검색어를 분석한 결과, 전문가는 검색엔진에서 영어로 검색을 시작하는 경우가 더 많았지만 학생은 사전에서 한국어로 검색을 시작하는 경우가 많았다. 후속 검색어를 분석한 결과, 전문가와 학생 모두 수정 검색어를 가장 많이 활용했으나, 전문가는 새로운 검색어를 그 다음으로 선호한 반면 학생은 반복 검색어를 수정 검색어만큼 선호했다.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="sec003-2">
<title>3.2 자기교정 과정</title>
<p>첫째, 초안 단계에 나타난 교정 움직임을 삽입, 삭제, 교체로 나누어 분석한 결과, 삭제와 삽입의 빈도는 전문가와 학생 그룹의 뚜렷한 차이가 나타나지 않았으나, 교체는 학생 그룹의 빈도가 전반적으로 더 높았다. 삭제와 삽입, 교체의 총합을 살펴볼 때, 초안 단계에서 전문가 그룹은 교정 빈도가 평균적으로 낮았으며, 하단도 더 낮았다. 원문 내용 추가를 위한 삽입을 제외해도, 전문가 그룹의 자기교정은 학생 그룹보다 낮았고, 텍스트 2에서는 차이가 더 벌어졌다. 최종 교정 단계에서는 텍스트 1에서는 그룹간 차이가 뚜렷하지 않았으나, 텍스트 2에서는 전문가 그룹의 자기교정 빈도가 더 높았다. 흥미로운 것은 모든 전문가가 모든 학생보다 적은 교정을 한 것은 아니라는 것으로, 전문가 그룹에도 교정을 매우 많이 하는 참가자가 있었고 이 성향은 텍스트에 관계없이 나타났다. 학생 그룹도 마찬가지였다. 자기 교정 빈도에 개인 스타일의 영향도 크게 나타났다고 볼 수 있다.</p>
<p>둘째, 초안 단계에 나타난 자기교정을 거리에 따라 거리교정과 즉각교정으로 나누어 살펴본 결과, 즉각교정의 빈도는 학생 그룹이 큰 폭으로 더 높았으나 거리교정의 빈도는 그룹간 차이보다는 개인간 차이가 더 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 텍스트에 관계없이 거리교정을 많이 하는 참가자와 그렇지 않은 참가자가 나타났기 때문이다. 하지만 원문 내용의 삽입을 위한 거리교정을 제외하면, 전문가 그룹의 거리교정이 더 많았다. 거리교정의 전체 빈도에는 그룹간 차이가 없었지만, 전문가 그룹은 번역문의 완성도를 높이기 위한 거리교정이 더 많았다는 의미다. 거리에 따라 나누어 살펴본 결과, 전문가 그룹과 학생 그룹 모두 문장밖 교정은 많지 않았고, 10단어 이내의 거리에서 교정을 자주 했으며, 먼거리 교정 빈도에 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 다만 두 그룹 모두 먼거리 교정을 선호하는 참가자가 나타났는데, 이 경우 전문가에 비해 학생은 문법 교정이나 원문 내용의 삽입을 위해 멀리 움직인 경우가 많았다.</p>
<p>셋째, 교정 범위를 어휘, 구문, 문법적 교체로 나누어 본 결과, 어휘 교체가 두 그룹 모두 초안 단계에서 가장 많이 나타났고, 학생 그룹은 더 많았다. 구문 교체는 전문가 그룹이 초안 단계에서 더 적극적이며, 학생 그룹은 어휘에 비해 구문 교체는 적고, 전혀 하지 않는 참가자도 있었다. 초안을 끝낸 뒤에는 전문가와 학생 모두 구문 교체가 많지 않았다. 구문 교체는 초안 단계에서 더 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 최종 교정 단계에서는 구문보다 어휘 교체가 더 자주 이루어지고 있었다. 하지만 전문가의 경우 초안을 끝낸 뒤 가독성 개선을 위해 구문 교체를 적극적으로 활용하는 참가자도 있었다. 문법적 교체는 학생 그룹이 더 많았고, 학생 그룹은 모든 참가자의 초안 단계에서 문법적 교체가 나타났으나 전문가 그룹은 나타나지 않은 경우도 있었다. 학생의 경우 초안 단계에서 문법 교체가 활발했던 참가자가 최종 교정 단계에서도 가장 문법 교체가 활발했던 반면, 전문가의 경우 초안 단계에서는 문법 교체를 하지 않고 최종 교정 단계에서 집중적으로 문법 교체를 하고 있는 참가자가 있었다.</p>
<p>교정 범위를 단어 이하, 단어, 구, 절로 나누어 살펴본 결과, 두 그룹 모두 단어와 구 교정이 단어 이하, 절 교정보다 큰 폭으로 많았다. 다만 전문가 그룹은 텍스트에 관계없이 단어 교정이 가장 많았으나, 학생 그룹은 텍스트 1에서는 구 교정이 더 많았다. 전문가 그룹은 초안 단계에서 단어 교정이 큰 폭으로 더 많았으나, 학생 그룹은 두 텍스트 모두 구 교정이 조금 더 많았기 때문이다. 따라서 그룹에 관계없이 교정 범위는 단어나 구가 가장 많지만 전문가 그룹은 초안 단계에서 단어, 학생 그룹은 구를 움직이는 경우가 더 많았다. 하지만 학생 그룹의 전체 교정 빈도가 높기 때문에 단어 교정 빈도는 학생이 더 많았다. 학생은 전문가에 비해 단어도 구도 더 많이 고치는데, 하나의 단어보다는 여러 단어를 교정하는 빈도가 더 많다고 할 수 있다.</p>
<p>넷째, 교정 대상의 분석 결과, 전문가 그룹은 텍스트 1에서는 논리 교정이, 텍스트 2에서는 언어와 문체 교정이 더 많았으나, 학생 그룹은 두 텍스트 모두 언어와 문체 교정이 절반 이상으로, 가장 많았다. 메시지 전달 교정은 두 그룹 모두 나타났으나, 학생 그룹이 소폭 더 높았다. 메시지 전달 교정에서 잘못 전달된 부분을 고치는 경우는 많지 않았으며 대부분 빠진 원문의 내용을 덧붙이는 완결성 교정이었다. 완결성 교정은 전문가 그룹이 더 적었지만 개인적 성향도 나타났다. 각 그룹에서 두 명은 두 텍스트 모두에서 많이, 두 명은 적게 나타났기 때문이다. 경험이 쌓일수록 초안 단계에서 원문 내용 추가를 위해 뒤로 돌아가는 경우가 줄어들고는 있지만 개인적 성향도 함께 작용하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.</p>
<p>논리 교정은 번역 단계, 텍스트에 관계없이 전문가 그룹이 더 적극적이었다. 특히 최종 교정 단계에서 전문가 그룹은 모든 참가자에게 논리 교정이 나타났으나, 학생 그룹은 나타나지 않은 경우도 있었다. 또한 전문가 그룹은 텍스트 1은 초안 단계, 텍스트 2는 초안 후 논리 교정이 집중적으로 나타났으나, 학생 그룹은 이와 같은 모습이 발견되지 않았다. 논리 교정 중에서도 주제구조와 연결 교정이 두 그룹 모두 가장 많았으나, 학생 그룹은 텍스트에 관계없이 연결교정이 가장 많았고 그 다음 주제구조 교정이 나타났지만, 전문가 그룹은 주제구조 교정도 텍스트에 따라 연결 교정만큼 자주 활용하였으며, 학생과 달리 외연화 교정이 두드러지게 높았다.</p>
<p>언어와 문체 교정에서는 두 그룹 모두 문법적 교정이 상당한 비중을 차지하고 있었다. 다만 전문가 그룹은 텍스트에 따른 차이가 없었으나 학생 그룹은 텍스트 2에서 크게 증가했다. 두 그룹 모두 문법적 차원에서 가장 많이 교정하는 것은 시제와 관사로 나타났고, 최종 교정 단계에서도 다르지 않았다. 다만 학생 그룹은 수 교정과 형태 변환도 더 빈번히 나타났다. 두 그룹 모두 문법적 교정을 제외하면 사용 적합도 교정이 가장 많았으나, 학생 그룹이 큰 폭으로 많았으며, 상대적으로 용어나 연어 교정은 두 그룹 모두 더 적었다.</p>

</sec>
<sec id="sec004" sec-type="conclusions">
<title>4. 결론</title>
<p>본 연구는 10명의 참가자를 대상으로, 160자 분량의 두 텍스트를 가지고 실시한 실험 결과를 바탕으로 한다는 점에서 분명한 한계를 지닌다. 더 의미 있는 분석 결과를 도출하기 위해서는 실험 참가자의 대상과 범위를 확대하여 후속 연구가 이루어질 필요가 있다. 또한 과정 연구 방법에 대해 충분한 논의가 선행될 필요가 있다. 번역 과정 연구를 큰 규모로 진행하기 위해서는 여러 연구자의 협업이 필요하고, 방법론에 대한 많은 연구자의 논의와 시도를 통해 공통분모를 마련할 필요가 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 10명의 참가자만 대상으로 했으나 약 1,030분의 원 자료를 분석 가능한 데이터로 바꾸는 작업은 매우 고된 과정이었다. 과정 연구에서 개인 연구자가 분석 데이터를 확대하는 것은 쉽지 않다는 의미다. 연구 방법의 다각화를 위해 추가 데이터를 포함한다면 실험 참가자 확대는 더욱 쉽지 않을 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 실험 대상을 늘리는 대신 소수의 참가자를 대상으로 번역 과정에 작용하는 여러 변수를 다각도에서 살펴보는 탐구도 필요하다. 본 연구를 계기로 실험 기반의 번역 과정 연구에 대한 관심이 커지기를 기대한다.</p>
