ABSTRACT

Objective : The purpose of this paper is to translate the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS), an instrument to evaluate the psychosocial impact of using assistive devices by people with disabilities, into Korean using a systematic methodology. Methods : To this end, the authors have translated PIADS and have conducted a pilot study for the purpose of the validation. A total of 26 items were translated into Korean through eight phases of a screening process. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the construct validity and reliability of the translated version. Results : A significant effort has been made for the translated version of the PIADS to reflect the socio-cultural aspects of the Korean language, rather than simply translating the literal meaning of each word used in the instrument. The results shows that the overall Cronbach's Alpha for the instrument is .95 and the Pearson's correlation for each item in the instrument is .80, indicating that the translated version of the PIADS has a high level of reliability. Conclusion : Implications for future research and the practice of occupational therapy as well as assistive technology are discussed.
