AB - The Korean Librarian Association was established in 1990 for the professionalization of the librarian in Korea. So far there has been no research with the association as a main subject in spite of its importance in the history of Korean Libraries. In this study, we attempt to investigate the meaning and the importance of the association from the view point of professionalism. As a professional association, the Korean Librarian Association tried to get professional autonomy from the governing bodies and the market to reach higher level in professionalization. But the activities of the association has been radically declined since 1997, which would be affected by the character of librarianship that is mainly based not on individual characteristics but on organitzational characteristics.
