AB - This article examines the central principles and implications of medical ethics from three perspectives: biomedical ethics, Confucian bioethics, and personalist bioethics. The most basic principle of these three ethical frameworks is that all the three share respect for human dignity and human rights.
However, in order to fully respect human rights it is necessary to protect human life. Therefore, this article argues that the principle of autonomy should not be regarded as the paramount ethical principle of medical decision-making.
