ABSTRACT

On March 26, 2010, South Korea's warship 'Cheonan' sank in the Yellow Sea by unknown factor and in this tragic incident there were 46 casualties. The government organized a civil and military investigating team to find out the cause of this event and came up with the result that the ship was sunk by a torpedo which was fired by North Korea's small submarine. However, North Korea as well as some groups in South Korea deny that the attacker was North Korea. Thus, in this study, we will analyze the impact of media such as movies like 'Cheonanham project' which influence the security awareness of university students in order to find out the media's desirable roll in security-related incidents. For this study, total of 129 university students were asked to answer 41 questionnaires before and after watching the film. There was a difference in the recognition of Cheonanham incident. After watching the movie, many students changed their opinion from North Korea's torpedo attack to stranding of the ship. These changes of perception are deeply related not only with the roll of movies and medias but also with the negative public confidence in the government statement. Therefore, government statements which are related to the issues of national security should be balanced between the right to know and national security to maintain public trust.
