ABSTRACT

Currently in Korea, there are two methods of estimating the quantity of bed load: one based on empirical formulas and the other on actual measurements. The method based on actual measurements involves risks and complications pertaining to the installment and operation of measuring equipment as well as the requirement of a capable workforce. This method has a higher risk and requires larger cost and time. The method based on the empirical formula hosts the risk of producing false values that are tens or hundreds times different from each other. Thus, this study adopts the Hydrophone, a measuring device that estimates the quantity of bed load indirectly by acquiring and analyzing sound data generated upon a crash of sediment on a metallic pipe with a microphone in it. This study improves the level of understanding the characteristics of the Hydrophone through a series of waterway experiments.
