As Korean society continues to approach becoming a multi-cultural
society, migrants to Korea which come from different: cultural, historical,
and social backgrounds, tend to coexist with Koreans. It is important to
look at the coexistence in a multi-cultural society, of different groups of
female migrant workers and female marriage migrants in the light of
biblical perspective. Female migrant workers and female marriage migrants
have all been living as members of Korean society. They have faced
difficulties as they try to adapt themselves to new circumstances in Korea.
Prejudice and discrimination result from ignorance which do not accept the
diversity of different cultures, ethnicities, languages, traditions and religions.
Currently there are more than one million migrants from all over the
world, including: female migrant workers and female marriage migrants
living in Korea. The existence of female migrants is not only conductive to
increasing the diversity of Korean society, but also to challenging the
identity and self-perception of Korean citizens. It must be stated that
Koreans, in general, need to more properly acknowledge and accept the
role that female migrants play in an increasingly multi-cultural society.
Such an understanding will also help to bring the voices of female migrants
into the centre of discourse in Korean society, in the light of an alternative
biblical interpretation.
