ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the effects that the popular political internet podcast program titled “Naneun Ggomsuda”(hereinafter referred to as “Naggomsu”) has on the political participation of college students. This study attempts to analyze the characteristics of the political participation of college students that listen to Naggomsu by conducting a survey for college students in Seoul after the Seoul mayor election held on October 26, 2011. A quantitative statistical analysis method was applied as the research method for this study. Although the study was limited to the college student group, the results showed that, first, the podcast Naggomsu had a statistical significance on the college student group’s determination to vote or selection of the supported candidate. Second, the college student group displayed a stronger effect of self-reinforcement regarding their chosen candidate as such group listened to Naggomsu. Thirdly, despite of Naggomsu’s positive effects on the group’s political participation, the results showed that it caused the polarization of like-minded groups and a distorted sense of fandom rather than creating and developing an area for the public to voice their opinions
