ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to review the Declaration of Independence on March 1, 1919 and to re-examine the Republican spirit of the 3.1 Movement. Furthermore, I propose to commemorate March 1 as "Republic Day" to help resolve the controversial "National Day" debate. Almost all Korean people agree with the nationality and legitimacy of the March 1st Movement, and many countries that have had colonial experiences make the day of Declaration of Independence the founding day. The contents of the Declaration of Independence contained the spirit of republicanism, and many people who participated in the movement were aimed at republicanism. The civil society of Korea, which created the March 1st Movement, formed a political society and established a government on its own, and its spirit was republican with universal values.
