ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships between trust, sense of belongingness, and community participation, and to verify the mediating effect of the sense of belonging. According to the correlation analysis among trust, sense of belongingness and community participation, trust in regional connection(TR) showed a significant relationship with interest in political and social issues, visits to community websites, and participation in social activities in the local area. Trusts in alumni connection(TA) and blood relation(TB) were significantly related to interest in political and social issues and visits to local community websites. Sense of belongingness was significantly associated with TR, TA and TB, interest in political and social issues, visits to local community websites, and participation in social activities in the local area. Based on the significant correlations among the key variables, the mediating effect of sense of belongingness was verified. The results revealed that sense of belongingness full mediation the relationship between TR and interest in political and social issues and partial mediation the relationships between TR and visits to local community websites and participation in local social activities, as well as between TA and TB, and both interest in political and social issues and local community website visits. The significance tests for the mediating effects showed that all effects were statistically significant. Based on the findings of this study, the following suggestions are proposed. First, efforts should focus on lowering barriers to local community participation, and local communities should actively take on promotional and linking roles in delivering local information. Second, continuous efforts by the local community are needed to implement strategies that strengthen residents sense of belonging by adopting both online and offline methods of engagement, which can help incorporate the voices of a broader range of local residents.
