ABSTRACT

American colleges and universities have experienced various problems disturbing the education of morality from the colonial period to the present. But it turned out that the educators were continuously interested in the moral education. The religious morality during the colonial period evolved into a morality embodied in general education via a scientific morality. We can learn a lesson from the development of American moral education in that morality cannot be transiently taught by way of one or more specific courses. The moral education can be conducted through the entire educational system including the courses of general education. Truth and morality are not completely isolated from each other, but may be united together so as to bring up a practical wisdom. It is necessary that the university make their students grow so wise as to well understand and integrate discrete regions of human lives.
