ABSTRACT

This article examines the nature of the Corean Tales, created by Korean language teacher Kim Jae-guk for Aston, and the source and meaning of the story contained in the book. Corean Tales is a Korean language textbook for foreigners. The story contained in this book was written by Kim Jae-guk, who had a representative story of the late Joseon Dynasty, and adapted the original work to a proper glossary. As one of the foreign language learning methods, novel reading was actively encouraged in Joseon, and was one of the learning methods that people interested in Korean often practiced. For those who knew some Korean words and idioms, it was natural to learn Korean language, culture, and customs through stories. Corean Tales shows the characteristics of Korean textbooks of the time and the origin of Korean textbooks for foreigners at the end of the Joseon Dynasty.
