ABSTRACT

This paper seeks ways in which to educate literature as part of the liberal arts for universities. The Fourth Industrial Revolution changed not only human society but also the literary environment rapidly. However, most literature-related liberal arts courses still use methodologies for understanding works and knowledge. As scientific methods such as formalism and new criticism dominate literature research, the ‘mimesis’ of literature disappeared from literature education. Imitating, repeating, copying, and parody is not only the essence of literary behavior, but also human nature. The concept of “the evolution of literature” of Russian formalism, Reception theory emphasizing readers, adaptation studies, appropriation, and intertextuality are theories for activation of Mimesis in creative act. Using these theories, we will study competency-based literature course in liberal arts that apply the Mimesis principle.
