ABSTRACT

With digital media and devices being used routinely and popularly today, digital literacy education in universities needs to be approached from a new perspective. This is because, unlike the general view of digital literacy, college students are sufficiently capable of using digital media. However, this paper sees that students' digital literacy, considered sufficient, is in crisis because it is in fact on a very weak basis. The digital literacy of current college students is just familiarity with the use of digital media or technology, and they may have difficulty fully understanding and accepting the essential changes in culture of digital technology. Therefore, this paper presents in detail four concepts or perspectives that digital literacy should focus on in university liberal arts education, with the original purpose of liberal arts in mind forming an ethical relationship between self and others in communal life. It argues that the complex conditions of current digital technologies — connectivity, materiality, sociality, and automation — are the core of digital literacy that university liberal arts education in our time should strive for.
