ABSTRACT

In this paper, three works of modern and contemporary social critique novels were proposed as texts that can be used as motifs for critical writing in university writing classes. The selected texts include 「City and Ghost」 by Lee Hyo-seok (1928), 「Rainy Day」 by Son Chang-seop (1953), and 「A Stray Bullet」 by Lee Beom-seon (1959). A four-stage instructional model was developed based on these texts. In the first stage, students engage in reading 20th-century social critique novels. They share the reasons and significance behind the selection of these works and read them as part of their reading-writing learning plan. In the second stage, thematic and contextual analysis lectures are provided for each work. 「City and Ghost」 focuses on the alienated existence contrasting with the appearance of the city, 「Rainy Day」 explores the overwhelming surrounding environment that suppresses the individual, and 「A Stray Bullet」 highlights the relationship between the people and the nation. The third stage involves brainstorming and discussion-based learning, where students actively explore topics. The topic exploration focuses on the core themes of social critique novels and their relevance to contemporary society. In the fourth stage, based on the identified topic categories, individual topics are determined, and students proceed with writing social critique essays. This research presents an instructional model as part of a case study in university writing education. It is significant in terms of the interesting nature of the reading materials, appropriateness of manuscript topics, and the close connection between the materials and manuscript topics. Particularly, the selected novel texts served as effective triggers for dialogue between the past and the present and established a complementary relationship with writing.
