ABSTRACT

One of the most distinct characteristics of educational discourse in modern and contemporary China is the emphasis on enlightenment education driven by a sense of crisis and the concept of "aesthetic education" (meiyu, 美育) based on aesthetics. Although these two approaches may seem contradictory, they also share common ground. Two key thinkers representing these perspectives are Liang Qichao and Cai Yuanpei, both of whom played crucial roles in the modern transformation of Chinese education. This paper examines the characteristics of liberal education in modern China by focusing on their aesthetic thought.
