ObjectivesDanggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san) is a herbal prescription frequently used to treat pain or swelling caused by contusion. To determine the expiration period through sci-entific methodology, stability of Danggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san) water extract, a herbal medicine, was examined under various storage conditions and periods.MethodsDanggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san) was stored either at room temperature (23±2oC), under a refrigerating condition (4oC) or under a freezing condition (−18±2oC) for 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks and then freeze-dried. Total phenol and total flavonoid amounts were in-vestigated; contents of amygdalin (Prunus persica), paeoniflorin (Paeonia lactiflora), and gly-cyrrhizin (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) - the marker compounds of Danggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san) - were also analyzed through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).ResultsNo significant change in total phenol and total flavonoid amounts was observed under the indicated storage conditions. Moreover, the contents of marker compounds, i.e. amygdalin, paeoniflorin, and glycyrrhizin, did not alter significantly under the indicated con-ditions, as well.ConclusionsDanggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san) was found to be stable up until 4 weeks under the indicated conditions. Further studies on efficacy and long-term stability are war-ranted to establish the expiration period of Danggwisu-san (Dangguixu-san). (J Korean Med Rehabil 2016;26(4):1-8)

ObjectivesThis study is to review the effect of herbal medicine on treatment of sciatic nerve injury induced animal models reported in domestic & foreign journals.Methods5 electronic databases (Pubmed, CAJ, RISS, Oasis, Koreantk) were searched with term as sciatic nerve injury, and animal study reports on sciatic nerve impairment with herbal medicine treatment were extracted.Results31 articles were reviewd. All studies used SD rat. 26 studies used crush injury at the sciatic nerve using haemostatic forcep and 5 studies used sciatic nerve transection. 15 studies used single herb extract and 16 studies used complex herb medicine. Angelica gi-gantis radix was the most frequently used herb. Each study showed significant changes of improvement indicators from sciatic nerve impairment.ConclusionsVarious herb medicine are expected to have positive effects on sciatic nerve impairment. ObjectivesThis systematic review is to support the effectiveness of herbal medicine for the treatment of simple obesity in adults. MethodsA total of 8 electronic databases were searched in English, Chinese and Korean. Standard methodologies for the systematic review were used to search, analyze and synthesize data based on NECA’s guideline for undertaking systematic review and meta-analyses for intervention. ResultsAfter screening 1781 potential articles, we identified 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We conducted a meta-analysis for the study using Bangpungtongsung-san and Taeeumjowi-tang to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicines on weight loss compared to placebo control. Both herbs showed positive effect in weight, body mass in-dex and waist circumference. In an analysis comparing herbal effects considering con-stitutions showed that proper treatment can lower adverse events. ConclusionsOur results provide evidence that herbal medicine can be an effective treat-ment for the obesity compare to placebo or to conventional medicine without serious ad-verse events. Further study is needed to evaluate effectiveness of herbal medicines consid-ering personalized treatment and its safety. (J Korean Med Rehabil 2016;26(4):23-35)
