Comparison between Koreans and Japanese on the ‘absence of words' when using the other's property

In this study, a comparison between Koreans and Japanese was conducted paying attention to the presence or absence of words in Communication behavior, and the results were compared with Ogoshi (2008) to see if the results of Ogoshi (2008) have continued to the present, about 20 years on. The results are summarized as follows. • Both Koreans and Japanese feel very uncomfortable with strangers using or eating their things without saying anything, but both Koreans and Japanese feel less uncomfortable with people in a close relationship such as close friends and family. When both Koreans and Japanese borrow ballpoint pens, there is a difference between family and friends, so it cannot be said that family and friends are completely the same. However, depending on the type of object such as a mobile phone, there is a tendency to feel unpleasant regardless of the degree of intimacy. • The gender gap in Japan appears when belongings are borrowed from family or friends, and women are more negative than men about unspoken behavior. In Korea, the gender gap did not appear to be significant when cell phones or ball　point pens are borrowed. In Korea, gender differences appear when food is eaten without speaking, and women rated this more negatively than men. • Japanese men are more negative than Korean men when their family members eat chocolates in the refrigerator or on the table. Japanese women are more negative than Korean women regarding the act of women eating chocolate on the refrigerator or table with any partner. • Both Koreans and Japanese have a negative tendency toward unspoken behavior. Compared to 20 years ago, in Korea, the tolerance for unspoken behaviors of family members and friends has decreased and negative evaluations have increased, whereas in Japan, negative evaluations of the unspoken behaviors of family members and friends have been alleviated, thereby reducing the gap between Korea and Japan toward close friends. In order to investigate the difference between Korea and Japan in terms of territory consciousness, it will be most important to design a questionnaire that reflects social change, to understand the survey method and subjects, and to design a new survey based on the results of previous studies.

A study of ‘nari’・‘tari’ on glossed reading of Lunyu (the Analects) in Middle Ages of Japan

This paper focuses on ‘nari’ and ‘tari’, which were used as assertive auxiliary verbs and ending of a nominal adjective in the diacritical material of Mubatsu-bon Lunyu Jijie vol. 1, which indicated the standard glossed reading of Lunyu in the Middle Ages of Japan. There are 75 examples of ‘nari’ used as an assertive auxiliary verb. Among these cases, 47 examples are used in the end form, which is most frequently used. Of these 47 examples of the end form, 27 examples do not show an empty word that performs assertion in the original Chinese sentences. Word classes that precede the assertive auxiliary verb ‘nari’ are nouns, verbs, conjugated words with attributive form, and adverbs. In the case of ‘nari’ connected with the attributive form of conjugated words, some are semantically similar with ‘noda’ in present Japanese as pointed out in previous studies, but it is also confirmed that some show a function to make a copula sentence with noun predicative complement. There are 15 examples where ‘tari’ is used as the assertive auxiliary verb and is attached to nouns. Among these, 8 examples are glossed on ‘爲’, which has a similar function with ‘tari’, in the original Chinese sentences. Further, there are 2 examples where ‘爲’ may be read as the verb‘naru’, but is read as ‘tari’. There are 66 examples of ‘nari’ that is used as an ending of a nominal adjective. Among these cases, Chinese characters in the stem are read in Kundoku (Japanese reading) in 20 examples and are read in Ondoku (Sino-Japanese reading) in 46 examples. In the case where the same Chinese character is used in stem, it was revealed that there is a difference in meaning between ‘Ondoku+nari’ and ‘Kundoku+nari’, and this is related to contexts of annotation of Lunyu Jijie. There are 50 examples of ‘tari’ used as an ending of a nominal adjective. It was revealed that ‘tari’ as an ending of a nominal adjective is glossed on the Chinese character for onomatopoeia representing a situation or state in classical Chinese. Further, all Chinese characters for stem are glossed with Sino-Japanese readings.

Concerning the chain structure of conversation in first contact situations: Application to Japanese language education

In this study, the free conversations in first contact situations were used as analysis material and compared with the native language situations and subcategorized by the subjects of the conversation topic. The purpose was to analyze the introduction and development of topics in first contact situations and to propose an application of its results to Japanese language education. “Contact situations”, where two or more different cultures come into contact with each other, have characteristics that differ from the “mother tongue situations” between native speakers, such as foreigner talk. Also, participants in the contact situations take on the roles of “language guest” and “language host”. As a result of classifying the beginning of the topic into questions, self-disclosure, and sharing, there was no significant difference between the mother tongue situations and the contact situations, but as a result of subcategorizing the subject, differences appeared. A topic that starts with a question is easy for a native speaker who is a language host to manage, so a topic for a “conversation participant” is easily selected similar to a native language situation. The topic that started with self-disclosure was influenced by the topic that started with the Japanese language learner who was the language guest, and the result was that “things” were easily chosen in the native language situations. However, there was a tendency for “conversation participants” to be chosen in the contact situations. Furthermore, as a result of analysis of the introduction and development of the topic in the contact situations, a tendency to show a topic development pattern and a confirmation pattern starting with a question is seen. As items that need to be taught to Japanese language learners, we proposed “topic development patterns for continuing or expanding topics” and “confirmation patterns.”
