AB - This study examined notation of the word champagne, the liquor from France, and changes in its concept. Studies on modern vocabulary interchange between Korean, Chinese and Japanese have focused mainly on Chinese words.
In contrast, this study examined vocabulary interchange through association with the notation of a kanji and the Hangul Alphabet.
Significantly, this study shows the conceptual change in transliteration of the word champagne "三鞭酒", which was received from Chinese to Japanese, and from Japanese to Korean.
Through English-Chinese dictionaries, "三鞭酒" was received from Chinese to Japanese. In Korean, after 江華島條約(1876), "三鞭酒" became established during the Japanese occupation period. However, the notation in Chinese changed from "三鞭酒" to "香檳酒", and from 1945, "三鞭酒" was created from "三鞭丸", the conventional analeptic efficacious medicine.
In the Hangul Alphabet, "샴페인" begun to be used by Koreans after the 1950s, and recognition that "三鞭酒=샴페인" disappeared after the 1970s. In particular, analeptic efficacious medicine "三鞭酒" was formally imported from China in the 1990s, and it may be said that "三鞭酒", which was once a name of French liquor, accomplished the change to a name of Chinese efficacious medicine.
