On the Homographs in Japanese and Chinese that are used as Attributes - Focus on errors by Japanese Learners in Japanese Education - The object of this paper is homographs in Japanese and Chinese. So far, the majority of studies has mainly focused on the meanings and usages of homographs and the complete understanding of these words is yet to be fully explored. Based on this, this paper analyses homographs in Japanese and Chinese when they are used as attributes from the perspective of the Japanese learners’ errors in Japanese education. We found that textbooks used by many universities did not sufficiently explain these homographs. The correctness and comprehensiveness of teaching materials play an important role in Japanese teaching. We thus believe that this study is beneficial not only for the improvement of teaching materials, but also for the Japanese education. As a methodology, we chose homographs that were often misused by students, analyzed the factors that caused those errors, and tried to account for them by combining Japanese education and theoretical knowledge of Japanese linguistic.
