AB - This study conducted a descriptive survey among 63 married Japanese migrant women in Korea in 2019, when the relationship between Korea and Japan was considered the worst after the war. Using the KJ method of analysis, it aimed to explore their conversation contents at home, including their utilized coping skills, their acquired emotional states, and the reactions of their children towards what they wrote.
As a result, first, the international marriage families talked about 'the development of conflicts between Korea and Japan' and 'the threat to their everyday lives'. Second, the husbands were considerate of their wives, and they dealt with the child's daily life as a mother and provided support together as a family. Third, through domestic conversations, they experienced overwhelmingly negative emotions, such as pain, frustration, dissatisfaction, sympathy and abandonment. Fourth, the children’s part of identities that are related to Japan were threatened by the “NO JAPAN” campaign in Korea.
Based on these results, this study further discussed individual and social ways that married Japanese migrant women and their families can lead healthy lives despite of conflicts between Korea and Japan. It also argued that Korean society should support the acceptance of children with identities in both Korea and Japan as they are.
