AB - This study aims to investigate polysemic aspects of the dimensional adjective ‘atui’ by particularly examining the relationship between their meanings in the specific area of space and those in abstract area from the perspective of cognitive semantics.
It attempts to grasp the relationship between various meanings in terms of the cognitive linguistics, particularly, semantic networks. Semantic networks are appropriate to analyze polysemy which forms a network-type structure in which individual meanings are independent but interconnected. Also, the relationship between each of the meanings consisting of the network is identified through metaphorical extension. In particular, through metaphor grounded on similarity between the areas and metonymy based on proximity between them, this study has clarified the process that meanings are derived from the prototype.
