ABSTRACT

This study investigates how Japanese language learners perceive the concept of "mie," a cognitive style unique to native Japanese speakers, and how their understanding develops. The research focuses on beginner to intermediate learners, using passive and naru expressions to analyze their grasp of mie and its evolution through explicit instruction. In the case of passive expressions, analysis of learner-produced sentences revealed that nearly all participants adopted the perspective of those affected by harmful actions. Despite some grammatical errors, they effectively verbalized situations from the victim's viewpoint, using expressions such as "踏まれる" (being stepped on), "怒られる" (being scolded), and "盗まれる" (being stolen from). This suggests that learners empathized with the characters due to relatable experiences, making it easier to engage with the storyline. Explicit instruction further enhanced their ability to adopt a Japanese-like subjective perspective, leading to greater awareness of mie. Regarding naru expressions, many learners attempted to interpret events subjectively, reflecting objective facts and their personal perceptions and emotions. This closely aligns with the mie concept, which emphasizes the progression or outcomes of events. Learners incorporated emotional and subjective elements into their descriptions, suggesting a deeper understanding of mie and efforts to integrate it into their output.
