ABSTRACT

This study analyzes 24 research articles on Japanese phonetics and phonology published between 2023 and 2024 in 18 Korean academic journals. Compared to the 63 articles published during the previous period (2021–2022), the number of studies and researchers has significantly declined, indicating a weakening of the research foundation in this field. A majority of the articles (58%) focus on Japanese pronunciation education, particularly learner pronunciation, teaching strategies, and instructional materials, while theoretical areas such as phonological theory, prosody, dialectology, and contrastive studies remain underrepresented. Meanwhile, practical studies utilizing emerging technologies such as metaverse platforms and generative AI have begun to appear, pointing toward new possibilities for innovation in language education. Based on this analysis, the study identifies three key challenges for future research: cultivating new researchers and reinforcing academic networks, diversifying research topics to restore balance across subfields, and developing effective AI-integrated teaching methodologies suited to the evolving digital learning environment.
