ABSTRACT

This study collected user-generated texts from major social media platforms in Japan and China to examine how the Korean Wave (Hallyu) is received and interpreted within each country’s sociocultural context. In Japan, discussions related to Hallyu primarily focused on emotional consumption areas such as dramas, idols, cosmetics, and fandom activities. Most topics exhibited highly positive sentiments and strong emotional coherence, indicating that Hallyu has become an integral part of everyday life in Japan and has been internalized as a form of lifestyle culture. In contrast, Chinese discussions on Hallyu revealed a more complex emotional structure in which political and ideological factors played a significant role. Negative sentiments were particularly evident in topics related to “censorship,” “historical perception,” and “celebrity controversies.” This suggests that Hallyu in China is not merely a matter of cultural consumption but is being reinterpreted within the broader context of bilateral tensions and ideological conflicts. Nevertheless, Hallyu content continues to be actively discussed across Chinese social media, forming a dynamic discourse space where both interest and criticism coexist. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Hallyu functions as a multifaceted cultural phenomenon shaped by each nation’s historical experiences and emotional frameworks, rather than as a fleeting trend or consumer fad. By combining BERT-based topic modeling with heatmap-driven sentiment analysis, this study proposes a new methodological approach to digital humanities-oriented comparative cultural research. Future studies should further investigate generational and temporal variations in emotional responses to gain a deeper understanding of how Hallyu evolves within the broader landscape of East Asian cultural exchange.
