ABSTRACT

This study examines the functions of integrated listener behavior in remote Japanese contact interactions, focusing on how the intersection of gender and learner status shapes these functions. Integrated listener responses—combinations of backchannels, evaluative or empathetic comments, and laughter—constitute important interactional resources for managing relationships and sustaining conversational flow. Drawing on data from remote conversations between native Japanese speakers and learners, the analysis considers three dimensions: formal patterns, utterance content, and interactional effects. The findings indicate that building intimacy is a common primary function across participants, regardless of gender or linguistic background. However, the internal configuration of effects varies depending on the roles of the speakers. Notably, male speakers do not follow a consistent pattern. Native Japanese male speakers tend to prioritize conversational continuity, whereas male learners show a different pattern, prioritizing relieving tension before ensuring conversational continuity. This suggests that male learners use laughter-inclusive responses to reduce uncertainty in interactions and create conversational stability before advancing the discussion. These results suggest that gender differences cannot solely explain integrated listener behavior. Rather, its functions are dynamically organized through the interplay of gender, learner status, participation roles, and the mediated conditions of remote interaction. By adopting an intersectional perspective, this study reconceptualizes listener behavior as a functionally structured, context-sensitive interactional resource, thereby contributing to research in gender linguistics, second-language interaction, and mediated discourse.
