AB - This study investigates the use of loanwords in the Japanese newspaper column Shunju (春秋), focusing on their role in the overall lexical composition. Using a corpus of Shunju (春秋) articles published between 2019 and 2025, we conducted a morphological analysis with the Web Chamame tool provided by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. Based on the output of lexical category classification, the study examines diachronic changes in the distribution of native Japanese words, Sino-Japanese words, loanwords, and hybrid words.
The results indicate that, while the overall lexical composition of the column remains relatively stable over the seven years, loanwords show significant year-to-year fluctuations. These changes are closely linked to social events and current trends, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, a frequency-based analysis of loanwords highlights a distinction between event-specific terms that appear prominently during particular times and more general loanwords that are consistently used throughout the years. By combining an overview of lexical categories with a detailed examination of high-frequency loanwords, this study offers a comprehensive description of loanword usage in Japanese newspaper columns. The findings enhance our understanding of how loanwords operate within journalistic discourse, particularly in opinion-based column genres.
