AB - This study analyzes the mechanism underlying the semantic extension of the Korean grammatical form -(u)silkeyyo and presents the following conclusions.
First, the semantic function of -(u)silkeyyo forms part of a broader extension process that proceeds from volitive to hortative and ultimately to indirect imperative, paralleling the developmental pathways observed in the Japanese siyo and the Korean -keyss-.
Second, from the perspective of Gricean pragmatics, this series of semantic extensions can be systematically explained through the operation of Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI), which is primarily driven by shifts in the constructional context, including changes in the person of the subject, the type of verb, and the sentence type.
Third, the main reason why the use of -(u)silkeyyo as an indirect imperative is commonly perceived as a misuse or as non-normative lies in the fact that its transitional stage—namely, its usage as a hortative—has not yet become sufficiently conventionalized or fully established within the structural system of the Korean language.
