This study was investigated to find out the smoking status of military hospitalized patients and the smoking cessation intervention by the stage of change behavior for quitting smoking. The study sample was collected in one military hospital in rear area. And sampling client was inpatients, sample size was 462 cases of all 470 inpatients. Study period was from 7th to 12th on April, 2003.
The study instrument was structured questionnaires, based on previous study DiClemente's the stage of change in smoking cessation and smoking status which was composed of 16 questions, Koung-Bong Ko's "Global Assesment of Recent Stress(GARS)Scale" which was composed of 5 questions, and 16 questions about the knowledge and attitude of smoking, 20 questions about smoking cessation intervention were developed by the researcher.
The results of this study were summarized as follows;
1. The smoking status is that the current smoker is 61.5%, ex-smoker 11.9%, non-smoker is 26.8%. Smoking rate is significantly higher in the
lower educated and younger age group, and surgical section(orthopedics, neurosurgery) admitted.
2. The current smokers are significantly more affirmative attitude to smoking and the ex-smokers feel significantly higher score in benefit of smoking cessation education.
3. The current smokers and ex-smokers were divided into five stages of smoking cessation behavior change; 42.3% in pre-contemplation stage which does not intend to take action to quitting smoking in the foreseeable future, usually measured as the next 6 months, 32.4% in contemplation stage which intends to change to quitting smoking in the next 6 months, 9.0% in preparation stage which intend to take action in the immediate future and usually measured as the next month and has typically taken some action in the past year, 6.9% in action stage which has quit smoking within the past six months, 5.0% in maintenance stage which has quit smoking since the past six months and until stops smoking now.
The subjects of action/maintenance stage are statistically significant in older age group and patients admitted internal medicine section.
4. The subjects of action/maintenance stage are statistically significant in more trial of quitting smoking for 24 hours past 1 year, decreasing daily cigarettes consumption after military service, higher score of smoking knowledge, more negative attitude to smoking, more benefit of smoking cessation education.
5. 20 of smoking cessation interventions were divided 5 area which is enforcive, supportive, conversive, reinforcement, self-efficacy by the result of factor analysis. As each stage is statistically significant as each interventions except reinforcement. In the enforcive intervention was regarded as the highest score important level in action/maintenance stage, supportive intervention was regarded as the highest score important level in preparation stage, conversive intervention was regarded as the highest score important level in preparation stage, self-efficacy intervention was regarded as the highest score important level in action/maintenance stage with statistically significant.
6. The result of multiple response analysis related the most important 5 priorities for the intervention of smoking cessation is that 1rst grade is having a strong self intention for quitting, 2nd grade is getting rid of pressure or stress, 3rd grade is no temptation of smoking, 4th grade is imaging of the future healthy image, 5th grade is providing the compensation (ex. leave, holiday).
